Anyone watching?

They've all sounded surprisingly reasonable so far.

But he would be, wouldn’t he? People want politicians to be all feelings and patriotism. Reality is a harder place than that, and actually they need to understand taxation, macroeconomics and geopolitics.

I agreed with Kemi about Tugendhat just complaining about everything. You could actually see the divide between him and the others, and not in a good way IMO. It’s true that government is about difficult choices, not soundbites.

Agree.

auditioning to be Hugh Grant's understudy.

This, too. Really thought he was playing a part.

Truss/Sunak/Badenoch all seemed capable and direct, although I think Truss doesn't quite have the presence or gravitas or ease or something that the other two do.

PearlClutch · 15/07/2022 21:38

Tugendhat's strategy seems to be to say nothing much and then when everyone else has spoken, disparage them. Stuff that.

Ooh I missed this thread

Kemi was great

Rishi I like

Tom I loathe cringe at but public like him so he can stay

Mordaunt not keen

Truss out hopefully

Well give TT past, and I don’t just mean his leadership in war zones, he will certainly understand geopolitics

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/07/2022 21:31

Actually that's exactly the order I marked them in.

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 21:40

Tom nearly did a tear to camera at one point

Too cheesy, too playing to the crowd but it worked according to some snap poll

They all did that to an extent. Kemi took a swipe at him and missed. Moudant had a go at a few as did Rishi.

Trusswas to busy making up words like Canadasis

KGM said they were 'floating voters'

I’m willing to bet those questions came from people who had only voted Labour in their lives

Public sector and health as ever

why no diversity

achillestoes · 15/07/2022 21:44

Maybe, but I struggle to see anyone as PM without a better grasp of economics.

HipTightOnions · 15/07/2022 21:46

Truss needs to stop impersonating Margaret Thatcher.

achillestoes · 15/07/2022 21:50

Truss didn’t have her best night.

PearlClutch · 15/07/2022 21:53

I missed the one in 'Chat'!

TT says he's "proud" of trans MP Jamie Wallis. I can't imagine TT will be a friend to women.

Interesting. I think Sunak is the only one not talking about tax cuts? If so he's right about that.

(Disclaimer, I didn't see any of the debate)

Conflictedunicorn · 15/07/2022 21:58

What has .Jamie Wallis done that anyone can be proud of him? Even when he turned up to court for his trial, he wore male clothes and used male pronouns. How exactly is he trans?

He's not saying no. He seemed to change his position a bit tonight

Can drive in stilettos? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Then he is a very bad judge of character and I'm not talking about Jamie's wish to be trans.

Typical! Woman effective day in, day out undertaking a certain task or activity: crickets. Man has a go and demonstrably fucks the task up: totes amazing! 🤣

Wasn't the whole point that he couldn't drive in stilettos?

Rishi was like a smug oily Tony Blair and tbh I don’t know how I could bear to watch any of them after what they’ve put people through the last few years with their lies. None of them are Conservatives.

TheBiologyStupid · 15/07/2022 23:10

Just tried to watch on All4 and apparently the debate isn't available on catch -up. What?!

Tallisker · 15/07/2022 23:58

Oh that's exactly what I thought when I saw him. Didn't watch the debate, just the highlights - obviously someone has a biased view Grin

John Crace in The Guardian had this verdict:

On this showing, the gene pool of talent in the Tory party isn’t even a puddle. A great night for the Labour party, if no one else. [...] Terrifying really. Still, we can only hope that Tory MPs are stupid enough to coalesce around Liz. After all, we’re fucked regardless. So we may as well go down with a laugh.
