You know when you read something that is SO FUCKING STUPID that you want to try and find a way to get off the planet?

Can't wait for the shitploppers to mansplain this to me.

The author is a PhD student. Doesn’t say a lot for the academic rigour of their university.

A couple of his points randomly picked from the pile:

Most women take part in sport for fun and exercise , not professionally so it doesn’t matter if they compete against transwomen. Biscuit

Objecting to athletes competing in women’s events who are genetically male with DSD and who are from African nations is racist. [I don’t know what you would call objecting to genetically male athletes with a DSD who are white competing in women’s events , unkind probably]

TheGreatATuin · 03/02/2022 12:34

Anyone using the term 'biological essentialism' unironically and thinking this is an argument that anyone is making, is so lacking in understanding of the issues at hand that you'd be better served asking your cat for their opinion instead.

SantaClawsServiette · 03/02/2022 12:37

A lot of universities are credential factories these days.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/02/2022 12:38

Most women take part in sport for fun and exercise , not professionally so it doesn’t matter if they compete against transwomen.

Does that also apply to men?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 03/02/2022 12:55

Little to no scientific evidence demonstrates that trans women have any sort of athletic advantage.

Will simple facts and statistics do?

Fail - A basic lack of understanding what Biological Essetialism means.

TheWeeDonkey · 03/02/2022 13:15

And then asserting that women participate in sports mainly for fun because we're not competitive. Demonstrating a lovely example of biological essentialism.

Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

WeeBisom · 03/02/2022 13:19

Remember a while ago there was a document going round giving tactics for trans rights supporters arguing for males in female sport? And one of the big things they emphasised was how this was just the same as racist discrimination? Yeah, it’s interesting to see that tactic being deployed here. Having female only sports teams is eugenics , good grief.

Thelnebriati · 03/02/2022 13:21

My threshold for bullshit is very low these days but that was so bad it almost reads like a parody.
The author even manages to crowbar in the now obligitory accusation of 'its like racism'.

NitroNine · 03/02/2022 13:23

Jesus wept. Is Sederbaum actually a PhD student, or does he just identify as one?

Honestly, repeatedly calling the piece to which they were responding “badly researched” made me embarrassed for them when reading the absolute mess they’d produced. Oh & the repeated “biological essentialism” as an unsubtle lead into AND THE TERFS ARE ALL RACISTS TOO: can one sue for having been injured by cringing so hard at the contents & construction of what purports to be a piece of academic writing you definitely revolved some organs (& then twisted them back again at further cringe)?

Insisting that athletes who it is well-documented are male & have DSDs that only male people can have are “cisgender females” manages to combine truly execrable research AND racism. To say nothing of the casual discounting of the views of [black*] African women on the matter. Treating the women of an entire enormous continent as an amorphous mass who would act as a hive-mind is grim, too - & what of the diaspora? Would the author allow a Kenyan woman living in America to express her views, but not her African-American neighbour? This fiction that all gender-critical people are white is so deeply tiresome - & it’s not the [GC] white women who are failing to listen.

The familiar suicide “stats” were trotted out; it being the “worst year on record” for the murders of trans people was not contextualised which was either just yet more poor writing or it was a deliberate attempt to obfuscate; & in essence it was a lengthy temper tantrum with the usual demand the publication Do Better.

The piece to which he is responding, by contrast, is well-written (in fairness, Kirk is an English Professor) & well-argued. It is personal to her but she manages to keep her tone measured & even throughout. She holds the perfectly standard GC position in that she doesn’t want to exclude trans women from sport; but she wants them to have every opportunity to compete in their sex category.

The editors of “Inside Higher Ed” absolutely have to be Gender Critical - not because they published that first piece, but because they published the second. If one side has clear, well-researched & well-written arguments DESPITE strong personal feelings; & the rebuttal is essentially a screeching mess of slurs, nonsense, racism & a display of the author’s position of privilege… that’s some GLARING sunlight.

  • I’m not entirely clear if the author’s ignorance is indeed so vast he is unaware that there are, indeed, white African women.
leafcuttingwhale · 03/02/2022 13:53

designated hate group

I love the way they genuinely believe their own propaganda Grin

Isaac eh? So a man telling women that they don't understand what it is to be a woman then? But he's not at all sexist - oh no.

NothingTraLaLa · 03/02/2022 13:57

Well, that was a load of old pony.

It seems that the author is a transman, so is clearly invested in the ideology.

Thelnebriati · 03/02/2022 13:57

Its othering, and thats concerning because itws usually the prelude to an attack on the othered group.

Justme56 · 03/02/2022 13:59

I think Isaac is a transman. Isaac says something about not taking a maths degree because a classmate suggested that girls don’t have the same aptitude as boys for this. I find it quite bizarre that Isaac took any notice of the classmate but I guess some people are more easily influenced than others.

viques · 03/02/2022 14:25

I think you are right. Which makes the whole article even more bizarre , but in some ways understandable, if you drink the trans koolaid I suppose you must eventually get used to the bitter taste and even claim you love it even though you know it is full of unhealthy ingredients.

(Btw Googling brings up an awful story about Isaac and their friend being attacked by a cougar, the friend died, so however twisted Isaacs thinking they have had a tough time of it one way and another.)

crossparsley · 03/02/2022 20:51

‘Biological essentialism’ would be saying that sport isn’t for women and girls, or indeed, as this person does, that women are not competitive. Nurturing, innit? What a load of sexist rubbish.

PrincessNutella · 03/02/2022 21:27

So, so dumb. The stupid "racism" angle. As if not allowing XY males like Caster Semenya who have fully functioning testicles, went through male puberty, and have male testosterone levels to race in elite events doesn't affect black female athletes as much as it does white female athletes. He's the freaking racist, not thinking that women of African descent are actually female. And also for thinking that indigenous cultures were too stupid to recognize sex.

CatSpeakForDummies · 03/02/2022 21:44

This author is clearly in a bad place, it reads like "but, but, but..." scattergun protesting rather than something logical and considered. As they are clearly invested in this, it's a bit cruel to tear it apart, it will feel like a personal attack to an already vulnerable person.

Instead we should think why such ramblings are being published? Who does it help to give a platform like this to someone to try and convince themselves of a comforting lie?

FemaleAndLearning · 03/02/2022 21:57

I hope the fact checking of opinions extends to Issac's letter too.

"I would hope that a publication that prides itself as being “the world’s most authoritative source of data, analysis and information on higher education,” offering “thoughtful, substantive analysis,” would still require fact-checking for opinion pieces and refrain from publishing authors who quote hate groups.

changewwible · 03/02/2022 22:21

🤮🤬😡🤯

Rheopecticfluid · 04/02/2022 07:57

It matters to women. But if it's such a non issue then the transwomen can play against their peers who have penises. After all it's just for fun and exercise. So it doesn't matter.

ExtraPlinky · 04/02/2022 09:10

If Isaac is a tm then Isaac is still quite happy to throw women under the bus. Isaac's trauma doesn't make betraying women and girls ok.

OP posts:
Rheopecticfluid · 04/02/2022 10:33

It's an incredibly selfish position. Issac presumably hates womanhood and tries to opt out. Whilst at the same time not giving a shiny shit about the women who haven't tried to opt out of their biological reality.

FOJN · 04/02/2022 10:48

Fail - A basic lack of understanding what Biological Essetialism means.

I think it was redefined because it wasn't a useful stick to beat women with in it's previously understood form.

writingonpaper · 04/02/2022 10:54

This person clearly has never been involved in amateur sports and has no idea how seriously participants take them, how hard they work or how competitive they are!

Plus, in contact amateur sports, the sex of the people you are competing against very much matters. That's a basic safety concern.
