I didn't know a man could be a TERF?!?!

Will this madness ever end?!

cariadlet · 13/01/2022 19:21

There are a lot of gender critical men about. There are those who have looked deeply into the issue and others who haven't followed the debate but are horrified at the thought of their daughter being expected to share toilets or changing rooms with men.

I tweet and retweet a lot of Terfy stuff on Twitter. They're mostly liked and retweeted by other GC women but I do regularly get positive responses from men.

Every man I know is gender critical but non get cancelled or called 'TERF' - this is new to me.

Graham Linehan gets called a TERF a lot, but yeah I think it’s usually aimed at women.

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2022 20:23

The term doesn't really stick to men so much, because it's clearly used as a sexed insult/slur.

Its almost as if there are two sexes and they can tell which ones are wome...... Oh.

He's not the first man to be accused of transphobia, of course. Jonny Best at the University of Huddersfield, Harry Miller of Fair Cop, Graham Linehan and James Dreyfuss are just the first four that come to mind. I don't know about Harry, but the other three have definitely lost work over this, so loss of money and adverse effect on professional reputation.

NitroNine · 13/01/2022 20:46

There is an odd habit of bundling together any & everyone who raises any sort of objection to gender ideology. Hence all the men who find themselves branded TERFs & the women who are suddenly right-wing conservative Christians, in some kind of Freaky Friday switcheroo.

This lazy labelling makes the Pope a TERF, which, errr… (That said, this event at the UN, for example, sounds a bit TERFY & he’s certainly pretty radical about the exclusion of trans people eg saying they can’t be godparents Hmm )

TurquoiseBaubles · 13/01/2022 20:49

I saw that on twitter last night. Again, an academic is reported and has their job threatened without any idea of who is reporting and what exactly they are meant to have said.

It really is trial by social media.

I presume universities would defend to the hilt a student's right to a fair trial when accused of an actual crime. Yet when it comes to opinions it's enough for a random anonymous report and they are prepared to take the accusation at face value and actually punish with no sign of any investigation at all.

Alekto · 13/01/2022 20:57

Interesting that he's another criminologist, like Jo Phoenix. Are they particularly targeted or are they more likely to speak out because of what they've learnt and experienced in their professional careers?

Enough4me · 13/01/2022 20:57

On Twitter he always pointed out that his views were his own, and he didn't say anything transphobic.

It appears that the insanity is now building to a fever pitch where people, through work places, will all be pushed into wearing pronoun badges (the in group) or sacked (witches to be burnt).

drwitch · 13/01/2022 21:00

Criminology is at the intersection of law and sociology which I think have been the most "captured"

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2022 21:20

Jonny Best has tweeted on the lines that when someone is told there is a complaint like this against them it's the process that's the punishment, regardless of the outcome. He is speaking from bitter experience, unfortunately.

Hoardasurass · 13/01/2022 21:28

@Alekto I think it has more to do with the fact that they are well recognised experts in their field and are the most likely to be asked for thier expert opinion on things like the apparent correlation of trans prisoners and sex offenders (50% of trans prisoners(self IDing) having been convicted of sex offenses compared to 11% of "cis" men) and whether it's because sex offenders are gaming the system or whether trans women are more likely to be sexual predators. Due to this the gender identity believers cannot afford to allow them or anyone else who hasn't drunk the coolade to speak out about it and anyone who is as highly regarded in their field must be silenced and smeared asap so people won't believe them when they do the appropriate research

Also James Esses.

Goatsaregreat · 13/01/2022 22:19

Funny how criminologists are a current target. It appears that the ability of male born sex offenders to access vulnerable women in prison is of particular interest. Can't imagine why - I would have thought that keeping clear boundaries from male sex offenders / predators would be a good thing but apparently that's incorrect and the demands of these men are to be prioritised. It's really not a good look.

girafferafferaffe · 13/01/2022 22:21

I really cannot stand this underhand reporting that goes on with social media. Disagreeing with someone and attempting to destroy their lives. It is reprehensible.

Who should we write to about this? Do you know who is in charge at the university I doubt they’re reading mumsnet, but a few emails from dinosaurs might help

Enough4me · 14/01/2022 00:04

They have an email address:

Led by their VC:
"As a University we are led by our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Martin Jones."

I'm referencing their website information: www.staffs.ac.uk/about/people/executive

Went to school with James. He’s a good guy. Family man. Haven’t seen him for years.

I believe he was making a point about keeping prisons single sex based on research that over 50% of women in prisons have experienced DV. He tweeted something about women continuing to need safe-spaces…

We really are down the rabbit hole when men showing empathy towards women is now an offence one can lose one’s job over.
