Woman in Poland dies after being denied an abortion

Tragic news from Poland. Seems a woman has died as a direct result of the ban on abortion.

4w.pub/woman-dies-after-being-denied-abortion/

'...doctors who saw the pregnant woman refused to terminate the nonviable pregnancy, even though it could have put the life of the woman at risk. Their final decision was to wait for the fetus to die on its own.

But the patient (a woman yet to be named, a choice made by the lawyer who sounded the alarm) suffered a septic shock after the fetus had died, and she didn’t survive. She leaves behind a husband and a daughter.'

'On November 1, Polish women held vigils in many places around the country in memory of the pregnant woman who had died'

RIP, and my thoughts are with her family. Flowers

That's terrible.
Religion and misogyny together make a lethal bloody cocktail!

Babdoc · 04/11/2021 18:11

Same thing happened in Ireland. Politicians should keep the fuck out of medicine. Leave it to patients and their doctors.

Conniethesensible · 04/11/2021 18:12

Absolutely awful. Heart goes out to her family. Religion should never trump science.

RobotValkyrie · 04/11/2021 18:41

Very similar thing happened in Ireland in 2012: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Savita_Halappanavar

AssassinatedBeauty · 04/11/2021 18:55

Despite knowing that this was always likely to happen as a result of the change in law, it is still shocking and awful to learn that at least one woman has now died. It's barbaric that the state can interfere in the medical treatment of women in this way.

RavingAnnie · 04/11/2021 19:01

Oh my god that is horrific.

QuiltedHippo · 04/11/2021 19:20

Thats just awful, sanctity of life my arse Sad

NiceGerbil · 04/11/2021 19:34

Women dying etc is seen as necessary collateral damage when it comes to people who are against abortion full stop.

Just a fact.

Whatwouldscullydo · 04/11/2021 19:46

When anyone would rather both die rather than provide a termination you know its nothing to do with " saving the baby" and every thing to do witg just making sure women have no control over their body and are suitably punished fir daring to have sex.

Poor poor woman and her family. Such a needless thing happen. Yet sadly so predictable Sad

Epli · 04/11/2021 19:57

Please make no mistake - the majority of Polish society is actually against ban on abortion: only 10% of respondents (with expected demographic profile: over 60, less educated, from countryside etc.) would like a total abortion ban. In November last year they already banned abortion because of foetal anomalities (for which NHS routinely screens), but 75% of society support the right to terminate the pregnancy in such cases (even among the oldest 60+ this opinion is shared by 52% respondents).

However the current political situation makes the group which wants a total ban on abortion indispensable for the ruling political party to hold to the power and continue to limit independence of judges, introduce laws at odds with constitution and disregard certain democratic procedures. I am not sure if the politician I have in mind is still active, but one of the most ardent supporters of the ban on medical side used to be a retired doctor, who during communism made a fortune from illegal abortions - so this is the state of the debate and this is how seriously women's rights are taken in Poland.

ArabellaScott · 04/11/2021 20:06

Thanks, Epli, for the info. It's horrific that women are held hostage like this. Abhorrent.

My heart just breaks for the woman's daughter. How will anyone explain that to her?

NiceGerbil · 04/11/2021 20:10

YY epli.

The massive protests over the last what. Couple years how? About this. Incredible also heart breaking.

The bending of the political system to force it through against all due process and what the population want was grotesque.

I am so sorry. Women in Poland must feel just. I don't know how. Let down, ignored, worthless, enraged. Appalling.

Waitwhat23 · 04/11/2021 20:28

That's truly awful. The baby was non - viable so both died for what? A system which sees women as nothing more than incubators.

Grumpyosaurus · 04/11/2021 20:43

Just horrendous. Terrible for the woman and her family.

This sort of stuff is just so depressing.

NiceGerbil · 04/11/2021 20:43

This has happened in USA btw.

A surprisingly large % of hosps are RC and the rules are from a senior religion type over there.

Incidents where not done termination when women miscarriage due to heartbeat/ general reluctance. Plenty poor outcomes some deaths.

ArabellaScott · 04/11/2021 20:44

I'm sorry, gerbil but it's more than that. If a society saw a woman merely as an incubator, as a morally neutral thing, they would have terminated the pregnancy to maintain that facility. This is more than that, it's condemning her to death. Effectively murder by the state for the crime of being female.

When you start looking into what's going on around the world it gets more and more shocking.

Reptar · 04/11/2021 20:45

This, along with the prosecution and imprisonment of women who suffer a miscarriage or still birth, is the inevitable outcome of banning abortion.

I am sick to the back teeth of the world wide war on women, the women who enable it, the men who turn a blind eye and pretend nothing is happening.

ArabellaScott · 04/11/2021 20:47

Me, too, Reptar.

Absolutely horrific, makes me so angry, very similar to savita’s case in Ireland

Yes, this. Whether they realise it or not.
ArabellaScott · 06/11/2021 08:42

Thanks, IsThat. Perhaps this poor woman's death might spark the same change as Savita's.
