twitter.com/MargaretAtwood/status/1450429768067846145?t=8q-A8MlvzZsx6pt4Vu1_LA&s=19

Has retweeted an article from the Toronto Star "why can't we say woman anymore" and bloody hell are they coming for the latest witch burning in the comments!

Ranging from disappointment to the usual sweary abuse. I thought oh how long till the capitulation begins, turns out I didn't have to wait long!

She's following it up with retweets about 'we can say people when it's accurate and inclusive' and then defending the article because the writer isn't "a terf"???

Not really sure what she's trying to achieve here, anyone?

What a pile on she's getting. I hope she is seeing the light. It would be incredible if the scales fell from her eyes from this.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 19/10/2021 18:34

One of the difficulties with Gottman's cooler theory* is that there has to be a sizeable community that is willing to re-consider their position when somebody who is 'one of them' like Atwood seems to be granting that the 'other side' has a point.

ferretface · 19/10/2021 18:35

This is great! A disproportionate pile on after making a completely innocuous point is exactly the way to peak someone, so I thank the TRAs for their service.

Mollyollydolly · 19/10/2021 18:38

Am I childish that I want JK Rowling to tweet her a heart.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 19/10/2021 18:42

I do think it would be fantastic if JK Rowling offered her support against the onslaught.

OK who is jeeeezasaurus? loved that post

AuntyFungal · 19/10/2021 18:58

@Pterfodactyl

She clearly didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

I don't feel sorry for her at all. She's rich to the point of untouchable and revered worldwide as the sage on dystopian societies. She could have been a voice in support of women living in this terrifying dystopian present. She's betrayed all women.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition Grin

Sorry / not sorry - she can F the right O.

Bright, educated, well read - the world at your intellectual fingertips.
Weasel off.

What’s she been doing all this time? Crocheting under a rock!!!

I’d take Greer, Rowling et al for a pint any day.

MadameKali · 19/10/2021 19:17

Margaret Atwood? The woman who literally wrote the book on sex based discrimination, before deciding to throw the vagina people under the bus, finally gets a glimpse of what's been going on and what she's been complicit in, whispers an objection and gets piled on? Oh dear. What a pity. Never mind

RedDogsBeg · 19/10/2021 19:24

Seems like the gun gifs are out for Margaret Attwood, perhaps this will open her eyes and give her pause for thought about what JKR went through whilst MA cheered on from the side-lines.

Floisme · 19/10/2021 19:31

Well this is unexpected - I actually thought it must be another Margaret Atwood at first.

As I recall JKR, took things very slowly at first - didn't her agent or publicist blame it on a 'senior moment' when she liked the wrong kind of tweet? - so I'm happy to give Atwood some room to manoeuvre and I don't really get the 'serves her right' kind of sentiments. Do we want people to change their minds or not?

My guess is that Atwoord will backtrack and apologise at this point but it's still out there now and she won't be able to unsay it or unsee it. And Canada too. Fascinating.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 19/10/2021 19:32

I was thinking that if Handmaid was written now it would almost definitely have a trans character. But then I thought that Testaments doesn’t, does it? And neither does the TV series, so far.

trancepants · 19/10/2021 19:33

So on Irish Twitter, JK Rowling is trending. I'm off to see if it's connected. But I'm afraid to look.

trancepants · 19/10/2021 19:37

It's connected but not a pile on JKR. Either TRA's comparing Atwood to JKR or posts pointing out Atwood turned on JKR. Weird that it's JK Rowling that's trending over Margaret Atwood.

EarthSight · 19/10/2021 19:39

@yourhairiswinterfire

Read her piece, she's not a terf

''Don't turn on us, we're not like all the other girls'' 🙄

@yourhairiswinterfire Haha. So true.

This^^

She’s thrown other women under the bus to maintain her allyship

I feel very sorry for women who get outed when their jobs are impacted not not women who sacrifice others to maintain their positions and she doesn’t need to maintain her livelihood in the same way. And as a producer of something where consumer sales make a difference she could well have seen the GC market is not insignificant

Same. I'm really surprised and heartened.

Since those earlier tweets, Margaret Atwood has retweeted two posts from feminist organisation 'Equality Now', one about female leadership and one about the new president of Ghana, who has campaigned against FGM.

I would be utterly delighted to see Atwood stand up for women and call out the people who are currently sending her death/suck threats. She may also realise how 't*' is used as a baseless misogynist insult, as it is being thrown at her over and over.

TreXX · 19/10/2021 19:50

Well if Atwood really has altered her stance I will welcome it wholeheartedly.

I'd like people to feel they can change their minds or develop their thoughts and understanding. I don't want a them and us situation either...

TreXX · 19/10/2021 19:52

Also, my mother is twaw but she loves Atwood and follows her on Twitter.

I'm taking a drip drip non confrontational approach with her and I can't help but think this will catch her attention

Mollyollydolly · 19/10/2021 20:01

I might sound harsh but Atwood, Pullman, King they can all get in the sea. I'll never forgive her for not supporting JK Rowling. No sympathy.

NonnyMouse1337 · 19/10/2021 20:10

I'm not aware of JKR sticking the boot into another woman and signing letters denouncing others of wrong think. She took her time, quietly read things and made her mind up.

Atwood would have seen the vitriol directed at JKR and, assuming she actually read what JKR had written, still decided to publicly condemn those nasty terfs.

I tend to take a dim view of people who are eager to join in the metaphorical stoning of blasphemers, without knowing what the hell it is they are supporting and even if they thought their cause was righteous. History is full of fools like these causing suffering to others.

Hopefully she is slowly understanding the real implications of transactivism.

Floisme · 19/10/2021 20:10

I don't care about whether or not it's harsh but I do care about winning this. And we won't win unless more people - including some people we may dislike intensely - change their minds.

Blessex · 19/10/2021 20:14

Oh Margaret, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive ….

oldwomanwhoruns · 19/10/2021 20:17

They are coming for her. Any moment now she will be up on that (metaphorical) wall with a bag over her head and a big red splodge on it.
Call Mayday, Margaret, while you still can.
We are here to rescue you...

Blessex · 19/10/2021 20:19

What do we do? Do we rescue her or leave her to burn?!

oldwomanwhoruns · 19/10/2021 20:22

It's a tough one, @Blessex.
But she IS a woman, so my vote is for clemancy and rescue.
Any more votes??

ferretface · 19/10/2021 20:24

I'll forgive her. I was an unthinking "ally" once. I think the pile on and total inability to accept anything other than 2+2=5 will peak her more effectively than anything this side could say tbh.
