Netflix FIRES Employees Who stormed Meetings Over Dave Chappell Comedy Special

Looks like things are heating up at Netflix over the Dave Chappell special. Good to see management refusing to cancel on demand and standing up to woke employees for once.

Apparently Sticks And Stones is their top (best rated and most watched iirc, also ‘stickiest’ though I am not quite sure what that means- most people who started, watching to the end?) comedy special of all time. So it is not that surprising.

I read in the LA Times that the employees were suspended, not fired.

Not going to watch the video—mostly because it’s 11 minutes and I don’t know this guy. Has he anything important to say?

The whole thing is just weird - from what I've read they basically stormed into an executive management meeting to kick off about this one issue. What did they think was going to happen?

As with so many things around this agenda, if people make an exception for this silly, unprofessional behaviour, where does it end? Could anyone crash in for a whine about their pet peeves?

I think it’s a measure of how they’ve been pandered to.
And don’t forget most newspapers were reporting the calls to cancel Chapelle as if it was a perfectly reasonable thing that might well happen.

Field went on to say of Chappelle, “our existence is ‘funny’ to him – and when we object to his harm, we’re ‘offended.'” She then listed numerous names of trans people, specifically highlighting trans women of color, killed in hate crimes.

All this stuff about Chappelle "attacking the very validity" of trans people, followed by a list of murdered trans people just sounds unhinged. Well, three people storming a meeting to kick off is unhinged.

While I want to be sympathetic to trans people who may well have valid criticisms of Chappelle, I've yet to hear one that rings true if you watched what he said.

I left Netflix over Cuties. I left Disney+ over Mandalorian dropping Gina Carano (who got piled on by TRAs after she put a jokey Beep/Bop/Boop as her pronouns). Might resubscribe over this. Just to watch him.

I make a point of supporting good, sensible shows, and take my money away if I really don’t agree with what the company is promoting. Will never shop in Lush or M&S again.

Cash and votes are where we will impact the big companies. 51% of the population have a lot of power in both of these areas.

I enjoyed his special and I thought he had some worthwhile things to say. He is a comedian, so he also says some coarse, no-holds-barred rude things about other groups including women, but with a certain amount of irony. I think he makes some good points about the hypersensitivity and cultural appropriation of the trans community that will be heard by everyday people that they don't usually hear.

I think they were just suspended unless it's change since then.

But ya of course come after execs with your woke crap and it's not going to end well for you. You can get away with it elsewhere.

If you watched the special you would know that part of the reason why Chappelle won't get cancelled is how he was smart to frame it. He went after trans activism not trans people first of all. He attacked the activism aspect which I think is what most people have a problem with and it's all the M to F trans activism that is so angry and wants to destroy the world. But on top of that he didn't frame it personally he said trans activists are trying to cancel black people, and that's why he won't get cancelled... He was smart to frame it that way, because Netflix might be okay with cancelling Chappelle but they absolutely don't want to be seen cancelling black people or black culture (rightfully so).

So good for him, he was incredibly smart in what he said and how he framed it.

I read the tweets and thought the listing of black and Latin trans people murdered was quite moving, actually. It reminded me of Jess Philips reading the names of murdered women in parliament.

I then took the time to Google each name and was disturbed that of these deaths, very few seem to have been reported in the mainstream media. It was the LGBT outlets mostly. That’s pretty sad because it really does reinforce the idea that the world generally doesn’t care about trans deaths, especially the murdered people of colour.

Having said that, it occurs to me I could attempt the same with Jess Philips’ list to see how many of the murdered women were reported by MSM.

Mostly, I just don’t want people murdered. Violence is abhorrent in any form.

I don't think this holds. Very few violent deaths are reported in the mainstream media. And you are in the UK, based on your name? It's unusual for any random violent death in another country to be reported in UK media, even when that other country is the US, which gets a disproportionate amount of UK media attention.

My observation is that the death of a trans person is much more likely to get widespread media coverage than the death of a non-trans person, but obviously still most don't, there's a great deal of randomness and of course there's almost certainly a racial component to it as there is with the coverage of violent crimes against women.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever compiled statistics that would back up my observation, but for an example, look at all the media coverage that a male assault on a trans sex worker here in the UK garnered recently. How many non-fatal assaults on female sex workers get that kind of coverage?

I do wonder how people get these jobs with such high profile businesses when they can’t even raise their concerns in a professional way. It reminds me of when a bunch of Hachette employees got mad about them publishing JKR. Do they think the world is like Twitter and companies will just bend? I saw a lot of Hachette jobs being advertised in the months after that stunt.

I don't think this holds. Very few violent deaths are reported in the mainstream media. And you are in the UK, based on your name? I’m sure I’ve seen on another thread that most of these murdered people were sex workers. So if this is true I don’t know if the problem statement here is 1. trans sex workers are more likely to be murdered, 2. sex workers of colour are more likely to be murdered, or 3. sex workers are more likely to be murdered. All of them significant problems that highlight vulnerable categories and need addressing, and it also seems quite likely they are all true, especially 1 & 2, but would be good to define the problem.

Prostituted women and men are in very high risk of being murdered or assulted. Its off the charts from what Iv seen.

In my experience what you mostly hear people say is you can tell jokes about your own group, but not about others. Or, you can tell jokes about others if they are oppressors, but not if they are more oppressed than you are. That's "punching down."

Rightly so, if I did this in my company over an issue I disagreed with management over, the same thing would happen.

Yeah I've always had an issue with this. This whole concept of intersectionality just makes it a race to the bottom where everyone is just trying so hard to find different ways they are oppressed because the concept turns oppression into power.... by giving special rights to those who are the most oppressed.

It's messed up... turning the oppressed into oppressors...

Also to expand on that, it turns different oppressed groups on each other and makes them fight eachother for power when they should be working together to improve their situation.

The person in question has had their suspension lifted as it was found that there was no malice in their attempt to storm the meeting.

White men are not oppressed in any way, shape or form. No matter the sexual orientation or style of dress.. some gay men are extremely anti woman (fish anyone).. and the gay community is full of racism as well.

So don’t give me this nonsense about how accepting and diverse and open they are. Just because you like to sex other men doesn’t make you non racist and accepting. That’s a myth. Just because you dress as a woman doesn’t mean you are oppressed.

Imagine going to a recent immigrant woman who is working in a very low paid job, has chidlren and no family support, is discriminated against for being a woman, in addition to being a woman of colour and perhaps having an accent and broken English.. and telling her that you as a white English man for 35 yes of your life or however many years and now are a trans woman, that you face more discrimination than her. That you are more oppressed than her.

Or imagine being a woman white or a woman of any ethnicity who is in childbearing age who is doing the same job as your colleague but being paid less and asking if you’re going to come back early from maternity leave.. your boss saying if you don’t you could lose any chance of advancing your career.

Or being a young girl starting her period at school being laughed at for getting blood on your trousers because of the high cost of female sanitary items you cannot afford to buy a lot of them.

But a man who chooses to wear a skirt is way way way more oppressed than you. Do these people have any self awareness?

I’m pretty sure women of colour are concerned about racism on top of being mistreated for being women. Intersectionality should be a concern for white women too as it involves acknowledging women of colours additional issues they fave in employment and medical care etc.. not only worried about trans women being included in women’s issues.
