Really beautiful words :

“I thought: ‘Being a woman means a lot to me. I do not want my womanhood confiscated in print.’”

Itsinthetreesitscoming · 04/09/2021 08:36

Wonderful. Well done to Hilary Mantel for putting her head above the parapet. She has always struck me as very brave and honest.

Beamur · 04/09/2021 08:47

I think her words and feelings on the issues in the article will resonate with a lot of people.

Createdjustforthis · 04/09/2021 08:50

She’s a fellow sufferer of the very female disease endometriosis,

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/09/2021 08:58

I was very pleased to read this. Another fine intelligent woman speaking out for rationality.

WorriedWishingWell · 04/09/2021 09:13

Thank you, Hilary Mantel.

Miniroofbox · 04/09/2021 09:14

This is so good to read.

Jaysmith71 · 04/09/2021 09:16

"I do not want my womanhood confiscated in print.’”

But thinking of taking Irish Citizenship.

Who's going to tell her?

PaleGreenGhost · 04/09/2021 09:27

I thought she'd said differently before or am I confusing her with someone else? Not to start a witch hunt, more thinking about the thread on how high profile people could change their minds when they don't have the anonymity most of us do.

LargeBouquet · 04/09/2021 09:34

@Jaysmith71

"I do not want my womanhood confiscated in print.’”

But thinking of taking Irish Citizenship.

Who's going to tell her?

Yes, that was my first reaction.
MonsignorMirth · 04/09/2021 09:34

Are you thinking of Margaret Atwood, Pale?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/09/2021 09:46

“It is barbaric that a tiny minority should take command of public discourse and terrify those who disagree with them'"

Yep. A tiny minority given an absurd amount of power.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 04/09/2021 09:50

Good
Maybe this is how the turning point looks no u-turns just the silent majority speaking up while the biology deniers go quiet/focus on banging a different drum.

I think that's absolutely right

no one really believes men are women, they just say so for social standing

once it no longer gains you social standing, those people will stop saying it

and part of the way that will happen is people like Hilary Mantel speaking out, so thanks to her

LazyViper · 04/09/2021 09:57

Thank you Hilary. Too critically acclaimed to cancel, hopefully. More sense prevailing.

teawamutu · 04/09/2021 09:59

Thank god, another author I can continue to love.

maslinpan · 04/09/2021 10:00

I always knew she had integrity and self-awareness. She has written about the struggles with her health and fertility with searing honesty, she knows about women's bodies.

RoyalCorgi · 04/09/2021 10:10

I hope so. She and JKR are two very big-hitters in terms of book sales and critical acclaim. I'd like to think that Mantel speaking out will give others the courage to follow suit. Given what's happened so far, though, I'm not holding my breath.

MaudTheInvincible · 04/09/2021 10:30

Excellent. Very pleased to hear this 💚🤍💜

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 04/09/2021 10:31

The full interview - in English - is available here. The trans section is at the very end. But it’s all interesting and worth reading I think. I’ve read Giving Up The Ghost, it’s an amazing memoir. Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for additions to their reading list.

"I have not given my consent to become a grammatical error"

Doyoumind · 04/09/2021 11:20

I'm glad she's spoken about this. I dislike the Guardian's reference to her 'wading' into the 'controversy'. It suggests she doesn't have a right to comment.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 04/09/2021 11:32

Yes good point! She was asked outright as part of a very wideranging interview.

MonsignorMirth · 04/09/2021 11:40

Agreed - it's as crap a descriptor as the Sun's 'flaunting curves' or 'romping'.
almahart · 04/09/2021 11:44

I've always loved Hilary Mantel. Her autobiography is the most honest and brilliant read. So full of admiration for her taking this stance
