when I thought the word actress was quietly being dropped.

The BBC has been referring to female actors as, well, actors but now Tommy here is female the word actress is used again.

I wonder whether people might have preferred nouns as well as preferred pronouns. But to be fair, OP, the BBC certainly haven't abandoned the word "actress" in any consistent way ( www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56951794 - Game of Thrones actress sues Marilyn Manson alleging abuse - 30 April 2021 ; www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-57488454 - Gone Girl actress Lisa Banes dies aged 65 following accident - 15 June 2021).

Ah. I thought it was the BBC being extra affirming.

Interesting comment in the interview about the change of relationship with Tommy's husband. All very positive and cheerleading but then dropped in that they're no longer together - they are now 'friends'
Does this mean Tommy wants to date straight men?
Almost all of the celebrity trans men/women seperate from their partners when they transition it seems.

Tibtom · 23/07/2021 16:41

What roles will they now play?

EastWestWhosBest · 23/07/2021 16:41

They seem to use actress when it suits them I think. Certainly they use actor for men and women on radio 4.

Here we go. First example I could find “actor Tuppence Middleton”.

Actor is more widely used. “Star” has been somewhat generously used here for a formed supporting cast member of a Netflix series?

FloralBunting · 23/07/2021 17:06

Like all gendered terms, the trans movement is at the forefront of keeping the ones that women have been arguing against, while simultaneously erasing the sexed terms which are useful to us.

So we can't have women and girls and mothers.

But we must keep gendered endings for jobs which are exactly the same whether men or women do them, for the personal validation of people like this.

It's the same bullshit as the people whining that women should be wearing make up and men shouldn't wear it because otherwise how will the world know that the obvious male person is performing their lady gender when they wear make up?

Trans ideology requires the oppressive parts of gender to stay exactly as they, which is precisely why feminists see it for the regressive shite it is.

Tommy is "excited" to be playing women's roles. Trans women, I hope. After all we have been told again and again that non-trans actors cannot play trans roles.

markmichelle · 23/07/2021 17:46

FWIW
I did hear one of the women of the Judy Dench generation give an emphatic explanation of why she likes to be called actress. Claiming that her reactions to a situation as she interprets might well be different to another womans but not at all like a mans reaction. Therefore realistic and proud of the difference between male and female.

Though on her Twitter bio she uses 'actress'. I've seen the Guardian change actresses' preferred term to 'actor' too - not very respectful, BBC and Guardian!

Will we see Tommy as Daniel Radcliffe’s love interest soon, I wonder?

Another gay men transitioning. That is quite sad, why don't gay men feel like they can be themselves anymore.

"I'm thinking about how I can infuse my trans body into film and television", she said."
What?

FemaleAndLearning · 23/07/2021 18:29

Who is he?

Pudmyboy · 23/07/2021 18:33

At least they referred to themselves as a trans woman, rather than a woman, and did say they had had surgery (though I am not holding my breath for it to be more than a boob job)

ChristmasShearwater · 23/07/2021 18:40

I prefer actress as did the late Helen McCrory.

'Lockdown isolation helped me come out as LGBT'
Sorry, don't get it. What's the LGB got to do with anything?....

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 23/07/2021 19:18

@FemaleAndLearning

Who is he?
My thoughts exactly.
NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 19:31

The see through top and hostess shit really grinds my gears.

We're told it's not anything to do with performing aspects of feminity... So WHY is it nearly always look tits and I'm a sexy lady and I love xy or z activity where I get to pick a stereotyped behaviour that appeals...

NiceGerbil · 23/07/2021 19:32

I got deleted!

Eh?

Imagine I will again as I hadn't noticed.

Hello monitors! Why is a woman commenting on the obvious a problem?!
