I know it the Mail - but another example of the ridiculous situation we are in. A dangerous man (working for the police..) is recorded as female for his crime.

Good, it could do with the statistics but it's a pretty clear report of the sort which needs to be in the mass media. Especially in the DM as it has a lot of the tedious 'women do it too' types.

It would be good if they brought pressure on IPSO to change current reporting practices - the DM report on the crime recently mentioned had a headline which said 'female'. They're being rather hypocritical.

AnyOldPrion · 11/07/2021 06:47

Glad to see the Mail specifically reporting on the skewing of the crime statistics.

We have to stop being so squeamish about it being the Mail. It’s probably the most powerful of that kind of news outlet and its content is freely available on the internet and not behind a paywall. The Mail has been consistently good on this topic and sunlight is exactly what this topic needs.

Thanks for sharing, OP.

DevonTF · 11/07/2021 06:59

They also have an excellent article by the brilliant Helen Joyce regarding women's sport. Very well written - simple and calm analysis of the facts.

This, everytime someone apologies that it's in the mail it implies that it must be morally deficient, the mail constantly prints what others shy away from.
ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2021 07:47

I see this piece was by the deputy political editor of the Mail on Sunday - it generally seems a bit more serious and less excessively populist than the weekly DM. The report on Watts was appallingly misleading

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8814479/Policewoman-34-charged-making-explosives-importing-weapons-raid-house.html
(They've turned off the comments now... some earlier in the week noted watt's sex)

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/07/2021 07:55

It's important that this is recognised and tackled - can't imagine why papers like the Guardian are so reluctant to address issues like this but we are where we are.
It's good to see that this issue is finally being raised in the mainstrem press (quote from the article):
" a significant number of sex offenders in jail are transgender women who were born male but identify as female "
At a time when women and girls are under increased pressure to accept the presence of unknown men in places where we undress, shower, sleep and undergo medical procedures, these statistics need openly addressing.

FreeBritnee · 11/07/2021 07:57

Any words I have in my head need to stay there for this one I think. Thank you for the light 🔦

DevonTF · 11/07/2021 08:07

Sex Matters responded to the housing of transgender women in female prisons. They faced some criticism - amazing how uncomfortable the truth can be. This is the reality of who those in power deem it actable to house with often vulnerable women.

sex-matters.org/posts/prisons/prison_jr/

We all need to keep pushing the truth

Agree. As long as the anomalies in sex of offender data records are highlighted and reported correctly and widely, the source of the reporting is not pertinent to me. Excellent important article.

NCwhatsmynameagain · 11/07/2021 08:22

The DM has until recently been almost one the only paper reporting on these issues. Regardless of their overall stance, it’s excellent that they are bringing this issue into the light. We definitely need more of this

TheHandmadeTails · 11/07/2021 08:31

Thanks for the links. Someone on here the other day started a thread and apologised for providing a link to the Guardian Grin

TeaAndStrumpets · 11/07/2021 08:33

I wish this could reach other newspapers, I would like to send a link to some family members but they won't believe anything that isn't in the Guardian Confused

highame · 11/07/2021 08:38

transcrimeuk.com/2021/05/23/kyle-zoe-watts/ I'm sure this has been posted at some point but here's another case of a 'women' committing male offences. However, what's interesting is that because this isn't a crime linked to sex, and Kyle was a police officer, they seem happy to call Kyle/Zoe (who identifies as) a trans woman. They're pretty clear when they want to de-tarnish police officers????

They need to classify as a separate category

MondayYogurt · 11/07/2021 08:47

Since Dacre left The DM has been consistently readable on these issues.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2021 08:49

That's the case I linked to the DM coverage of upthread, highame - they reported Watts as being 'female'. I'm not sure it mentioned watts being a transwoman at all. (But it did have quite a few photos)

highame · 11/07/2021 08:59

My mistake, I didn't see this in the DM, should have checked first. This is an article by an organisation called transcrimeuk, which clearly has bias.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 11/07/2021 09:15

I agree with this and everyone else who has mentioned it, this is the paper that wouldnt let the murder of Stephen Lawrence lie
RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 11/07/2021 09:16

And so they should!

😀

FridayNightByCandlelight · 11/07/2021 09:24

If they wanted to record the data meaningfully, they'd record sex and gender identity.

We would then have a clear picture of patterns of crime committed by females, crimes committed by males and crimes committed by people of either sex who identify as the other.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 11/07/2021 09:51

This is an article by an organisation called transcrimeuk, which clearly has bias.

But is that bias, Highame? Isn’t it just information? We’re endlessly being told transwomen pose no threat to us. Transcrimeuk simply reports facts as far as I can see.

The site reports crime by transpeople — usually transwomen, as you’d expect, because they commit more crimes than transmen. Statistics show that men commit more crimes than women.

Its name states its purpose clearly, so there’s no dishonesty.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 11/07/2021 09:51

We would then have a clear picture of patterns of crime committed by females, crimes committed by males and crimes committed by people of either sex who identify as the other.

Which might give some helpful insights into types of crimes and drivers.

Babdoc · 11/07/2021 10:09

Highame do you accept the FACTS:
that HALF of all transwomen in prison are there for sex offences?
That transwomen commit crimes at the same rate as men, not women?
That there are more trans murderers than trans murder victims?
And that women need honest factual reporting of trans crimes, and protected single sex spaces from all men, however they “identify”?

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/07/2021 10:14

These false statistics were used by a poster on another thread to complain about safeguarding

This is the huge worry.

When "women " become as bad as men for all those crimes then there will be no need to segregate us will there as we are all as bad as eachother.
