Started archery at the age of 37. Is representing Canada in the Olympics in Archery at the age of 42. How lucky that Stephanie just happens to have an Olympic level talent for archery. I wonder what it is that sets this athlete apart from the much younger women in the category, apart from their height?

I don't know full details but here in the UK funding, not just of an individual athlete but also of a sport on the whole, is linked to results so if a UK women is bumped from say 12th to 13th because a TW finishes in say 9th she could have her funding reduced or even removed and other women in that sport could also have their funding reduced/removed so it can be targeted elsewhere. It's so not just about medals.

I’m only in it about once a year/when I feel like it, but that seems to work for some…

I'm not particularly into watching sport - I'd much rather play it myself - but I've always really loved the Olympics and always got into watching and supporting all the diverse sports. I remember standing at a bus stop, repeatedly refreshing my phone as Nick Skelton was in the jump-off at Rio, eventually winning the gold, trying to hide my tears of joy so the other commuters didn't think I was a bit strange. .

The IOC letting men compete against women has completely ruined the Olympics for me - all of it, not just the most obviously ruined sports. It's a complete travesty and I don't think I can watch any of it this year.

They got there because they couldn’t cut it competing against their peers and CHOSE to compete against people who have a physical disadvantage.

That is how you get from ‘for fun’ to the Lympics.
