I'm curious. Does anyone here actually like/agree with the new name, 'Sex & gender debate'? I'm interested to see the general consensus and how much support there is here for the name MNHQ have chosen.

Personally, I'd prefer 'Women's Sex-Based Rights' because I come here to post about those, not to have debates about sex and gender. I can't really see how one could have those particular debates here without running afoul of the special language rules, anyway.

If you do like the new name, could you say why? And if not, can you improve on my suggestion?

@LizzieSiddal

I want to be able to go back and forwards between the two feminism boards, in one easy step! It’s infuriating having to keep going back to “Talk”.
This. A lot.

But it does seem to have been renamed again. I now have Feminism: chat and Feminism: Sex and Gender (no debate)

WinterTrees · 22/06/2021 11:06

Presumably that can go on the other board then? If it’s not debate about sex and gender, just a primal scream. Or indeed a Feminist subject where sex and constructed gender considerations are pertinent but not the core point?

I can't see that it'll work like that, sadly. I was thinking particularly of the fairly regular threads we have, started by women who have found themselves at odds with teen and young adult family members or work colleagues about this, and who want to vent, seek guidance on how to deal with it, and have the support of other women who don't see them as bigoted witches for knowing that women are oppressed on the basis of their sex. Under the new system, women who have come to MN feeling bruised after heated argument with their genderist kids will now have to post in a topic that expressly invites more 'gender debate'.

In which case, I'm with Ted. No censorship of language. No banned phrases. No 'not in the spirit.' Debate implies robust plain speaking, and anyone who strays in here should be prepared for that.

Both under FWR

SpindleWhorl · 22/06/2021 11:11

Yep, 'debate' is the opposite of '#nodebate' in my head.

SpindleWhorl · 22/06/2021 11:15

I'm trying to recall through my bloody menopausal brain fog what the original FWR boards were when I joined MN a decade or so ago, before 'Feminism Chat' was created. There was Feminist support, feminist theory, and ... ? Please jog me someone.

Feminist writing/literature I think

SpindleWhorl · 22/06/2021 11:21

Ah yes! Thank you, Ted.

GreenWhiteViolet · 22/06/2021 11:31

Completely agree with Ted and WinterTrees - debate is important, but a debate in which one side has posts deleted for expressing its position in a neutral, factual way isn't a fair one, it's the freak show/poke at the feminists pseudo-debate that another poster described.

As for lurkers not feeling welcome if the name refers to women's rights? I doubt anything will make them feel welcome. It's the same tactic as 'I won't appear on your TV show if a person I disagree with is also there.' The answer to that isn't to get rid of the other guest or limit what they can say. It's to tell the offended person 'that's fine, we'll find someone else'.
