Please let them ask the obvious question...

Too little to late though imho

Is that Jess Phillips I can hear?

PiccalilliChilli · 17/05/2021 08:37

It's topical news and they are jumping on the bandwagon. Reactive, not proactive, as usual.

somethinginoffensive · 17/05/2021 08:37

Fucks sake, he's turned it into "does prison work?".

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 08:38

Wonder if it was a last minute thing - neither sounded prepared.

So many people simply miss the point. I had a discussion with a friend recently about gender neutral toilets. She insisted that her local council provided "ladies and gents".
The problem, however, is the definition of " ladies".
I gave up in the end. She just couldn't grasp it.

WhatyoutalkingaboutWillis · 17/05/2021 08:39

He did a lot of hmm ing!

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 08:41

I can only see lawyers rubbing their hands here. Can you imagine ‘well, I think Xi can raise a complaint under several gate crime categories...’

if the introduction to said paper starts with "women and girls including those who identify as women and non binary" then we'll know that it's the same old nonsense and therefore not about women and girls at all but about people which is a whole different piece of work

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/05/2021 08:57

But they aren’t all singing from the same hymn sheet. There are so many ‘Labour’ groups (student, LGB+ etc) who are equivocal.

Jane Clare Jones wrote an excellent post about this issue - it sounds so absurd that people can't grasp it's happening and promoted by organisations in plain sight. That said, I can't find the one that I had in mind but his has some of the ideas.

For those of you out there still sitting on the fence, or who still believe that I, and everyone opposing this ‘civil rights movement’, is just a nasty evil hate-mongering bigot, please, if you give one shit about women and the protection of women, wake-the-fuck-up. This is actually happening, it’s scary as shit, and we may well be running out of time. This is what woman-hating totalitarianism looks like. This is not a fucking drill.

They don't protect Rosie Duffield for a start, has anyone been kicked out of Labour for abusing her? I know when I complained I was told there were no grounds to investigate and my follow-up was ignored. They didn't protect Luciana Berger either, I'm sure I read the leader's office sat on information about a death threat.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/05/2021 09:11

I went onto Labour’s website to find a copy of this but couldn’t see it. Seems a bit strange to post a press release about it without a link to the actual paper

TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 09:25

JP sounded blind sided by JW asking whether prison works. Which is a whole other discussion, and I wish JP had had the presence of mind to say so. It was a dick move on JW's part IMO, taking the focus away from the daily hatred women face for being women. It is not incompatible to want both misogyny to be a hate crime category on the statute books, and for a review on whether the current system of prison sentencing works, and whether prisons themselves are doing anything about recidivism/prevention.

Hopefully #AboutLosingWomen is finally sinking in at Labour Party HQ. Whether they understand that knowing how to define a woman is crucial to regaining trust is yet to be seen. I just don't see the powerful lobbies wishing to bandwagon any move to improve the lot of adult human females leaving this alone.

I'm thinking back of an envelope desperation move since the local election disaster.
TedImgoingmad · 17/05/2021 09:27

#LabourLosing Women, not sure where "about" came from.

Defaultname · 17/05/2021 09:52

The back of the envelope is the side you put your tongue out and lick, isn't it?
Yes, that might well describe Labour's gender policy...

IShouldBeSoLurky · 17/05/2021 11:16

The Guardian is reporting this as including “banning sex for rent”. Anyone know wtf that actually means? I didn’t hear Jess’s interview earlier.

There are unscrupulous landlords who take advantage of poor and/or vulnerable women and offer to discount or even waive their rent in exchange for sex.

(As always, there will also be some male victims of this, but the only reports I've seen were about young women being exploited in this way.)

IShouldBeSoLurky · 17/05/2021 11:44

Aaaaah, gotcha CharlieParley. I thought it was a strange euphemism for prostitution but know what they mean now. Thanks Flowers

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/05/2021 14:36

Here’s the actual paper

labour.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Ending-Violence-Against-Women-and-Girls-Green-Paper.pdf

Kit19 · 17/05/2021 14:44

at a quick glance, no refence to upholding the protected characteristics of the Equality Act, sex and gender used interchangeably

persistentwoman · 17/05/2021 14:51

Now that the mainstream press have started reporting that women (and the population generally) won't vote for politicians who don't know what a woman is and who prioritise the demands of an unrepresentative minority attacking women, it's going to be harder and harder for the LP to maintain their fingers in ears, not listening to women, lalala approach.

Kit19 · 17/05/2021 14:54

I cant see anything in there that would prevent a woman being asked to refer to her male born attacker as 'she'

persistentwoman · 17/05/2021 14:56

There's a great article about the Labour Party from Trevor Phillips in today's Times. It's so worth reading (remembering that he has been suspended by Labour for alleged 'racism' ) as are the comments underneath. Share token:

I think it perfectly demonstrates what vote-who**s they are. Plus the dangers of letting social media and minority/splinter groups drive the bus.
