Watching a film on Netflix called The Switch

A woman wants to have a baby by sperm donor, throws a getting pregnant party, and the best friend switches his sperm with the real donor.

Supposed to be a way of him covering up his accident of spilling said sperm but to me this just feels uncomfortable. The man made it clear from the start he doesn’t approve of her using a sperm donation and this is a way of him getting his “win”

I agree it's a weird and uncomfortable premise. Do they end up falling in love and being a happy family?

It sounds horrendous and I have no idea how that storyline was allowed to be made into a film. Yes, I bet they end up being a happy family. 🙄

Yeah that is pretty gross. I really hope this kind of trope becomes as unacceptable as the 'hilarious' rape tropes in old films like Sixteen Candles.

Lars and the Real Girl (which everyone seemed to think was soooooo sweet) made my skin crawl.

Netflix made a show called Bonding, about a student who is a dominatrix in her spare time, to pay the bills. So hilarious!

They also have a show called Special, about a young gay man with cerebral palsy. The bit i didn't like involved him trying to lose his virginity and SPOILER he hires a prostitute, because why not, eh? It was a shame because it was apart from that I thought it was pretty good.

Not a comedy and a film I've only seen once - I think when I was a teenager or no more than 20 - which made me feel uncomfortable then and now makes me furious is High Plains Drifter. That rape scene when she ends up enjoying it really confused me at the time and stayed with me. I know film buffs defend it with whatever justification but it feels indefensible.

The running joke throughout the film is how a trio of 12 year old boys talk about adult things but are so naive, us adults watching get the jokes but they don’t see it themselves. Ha ha, kids don’t appreciate what they’re holding are anal beads, not a necklace like they think .

According to IMDB the actors were just given the lines with no context and any questions asked were referred to their parents. To me, it’s still dodgy as hell, a group of child actors talking about sex, blowjobs and sex toys. At one point they’re told - by another child - a swing in their parents’ room is for sex. So regardless of how protected the actors are, they still learnt about sex swings FFS. I just thought it was gratuitous.

I know there’s a long cinematic history of child actors in adult situations. Jodie Foster talks about how uncomfortable it was playing a 12 year old prostitute in Taxi Driver.

I've just googled the plot for The Switch to answer my question. I don't think it's a spoiler to say it's predictable.

The rape scene in rules of attraction. I felt like it was treated really casually and like it was a joke. I didn’t really get it. It made me really uncomfortable. Obviously it’s meant to be satirical but it was a pretty realistic thing to happen to many women. Was I missing something?

Yes - quite a few scenes from the Big Bang Theory are creepy and sleazy. A much older actor in his 40s being with a 19 year old actress was off (5th Element). Add to that the numberour film where the male lead its at least 15 years old older.

The Peep Show - and might watch another series as I like some aspects of it, but the female characters are definitely only objectified in the first series and one scene has one of the main characters batting the badminton shuttlecock far too hard at her head during a game because he's resetful she got a promotion. Then there's one of them lying saying his grandad's dead in order to get sympathy and a handjob. Probably that was the point of the show though really as neither character are portrayed flatteringly generally.

Friends - don't remember specific scenes but I found some of Joey & Chandler's behaviour quite sleazy towards their apparent female 'friends' at times. It's the kind of thing women ate expected to put up with under the excuse of 'Oh ignore him. He's a guy! Men are like that'

Just watched the announcement that he “hijacked her pregnancy”

Instead of waiting to do it in private...he announces it at a party because he had to get it off his chest

So many things in The Big Bang theory but my special 🙄🙄🙄 is reserved for the fact that throughout the show, Penny was one of the few mainstream female tv characters who was able to voice consistently that she didn’t want children (even though there were multiple scenes of Bernadette being a cow ti her about it) and then lo and behold in the final episode Leonard who really really did want children ‘forgot’ to use a condom and penny is pregnant. FFS on so many levels!!!!!

The film Bad Bosses where the Jennifer Aniston character drugs her boss and then effectively rapes him. We stopped watching after that scene, it was disgusting but meant to be amusing because it was a woman doing it to a man.

That episode in poldark where they manage to justify semi-accidental wife murder- as in, you can tell they are trying to get you to root for the killer .Similarly the bit where Ross effectively rapes Elizabeth.

Those aren’t funny obvs but they aren’t portrayed in the way you would expect them to be
