If they have sex without contraception regularly.

Bet they won’t....

FFS.

so 8 out of 20 people, really...

but ffs, this is ridiculous

Nightmanagerfan · 08/02/2021 20:53

What’s your point( why do you think this isn’t accurate? Many people get pregnant easily

LApprentiSorcier · 08/02/2021 20:54

Nightmanagerfan I think it's the word 'people' the OP is taking issue with.

ellenpartridge · 08/02/2021 20:54

Nightmanager it's because it may be true for 8/10 women but certainly not 8/10 people...

Precipice · 08/02/2021 20:55

The point is that 5 out of 10 people will never be able to get pregnant however much unprotected sex they have, because 5 out of 10 people are male.

terfinginthevoid · 08/02/2021 20:56

I think you’ll find that men never get pregnant, no matter how often they have sex.

SomersetHamlyn · 08/02/2021 20:56

Oh I see. That's the issue? I couldn't understand on what basis you were disagreeing with the statistics (which are presumably evidence-based).

Because 'people' includes men. Do you really think 8 out of 10 men will get pregnant within a year?

Hamsterfan · 08/02/2021 21:01

At least it acknowledges that a sperm and an egg are required rather than thinking sparkly unicorn s**t and whatever other gamete the seventieth gender produces are what’s needed

Nightmanagerfan · 08/02/2021 21:01

Oh I get it now. The OP wasn’t clear. I agree this is awful - why can’t we just say women. We’re being erased from so many female only situations.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/02/2021 21:03
Hmm

Its meaningless isn't it.

Mumofgirlswholiketoplaywithmud · 08/02/2021 21:03

Do they mean 8 out of 10 women get pregnant? Or 8 out of a group of a mix of 50:50 men and women? So... All 5 women and 3 of the men?

legalseagull · 08/02/2021 21:06

I imagine they're including the men as 50% of the people trying for a baby. Like when couples say "we're expecting in June". Speaking in the singular.

NancyDrawed · 08/02/2021 21:06

You can give feedback on the page (via the 'contact us' link lower down which I will try to do tomorrow.

It was last reviewed 2nd December 2020, I wonder whether the wording was accurate before then?

NecessaryScene1 · 08/02/2021 21:07

Well, not 8 out of 10 men, but for 8 out of 10 people to do it, assuming all 5 women in the 10 manage it, 3 men still have to, so that would be at least 6 out of 10 men.

Wickstead · 08/02/2021 21:07

I don’t know which is worse. Both imply men can get pregnant.

I'm living out a Fawlty Towers sketch.
Don't mention the..........sex

WinterIsGone · 08/02/2021 21:09

This caused a great deal of amusement chez nous this evening. If you're going to encourage writers to replace the word woman, you really need to employ people who also understand logic. Grin

WinterIsGone · 08/02/2021 21:12

Actually, having a further Google, I wonder whether it was to take out the word couples as in:
"More than 8 in 10 couples, where the woman is under 40, will conceive naturally"
See www.nhs.uk/conditions/infertility/diagnosis/

That’s how NICE puts it.

Still makes my teeth itch but at least it’s correct...

I'd say around 90 - 95% of the sex I have have had been outside of trying for a baby. I'm sure that holds true for most women and definitely for most men.

So no, I don't think they mean that. I think they mean 'we're woke. Please don't hate us.'

Morred · 08/02/2021 21:16

It also presumably depends who you’re having sex with (and/or assumes “having sex” is PIV). 8/10 lesbian couples aren’t going to get pregnant if they have sex for a year, are they?

Very true.

It’s just a complete nonsense, isn’t it?
