Twitter - what an absolute cesspit

I had to deactivate my account last night. I feel like an absolute coward for doing so, and I will probably reactivate at some point. But wow...

I happened to comment on a post from Planned Parenthood, expressing disappointment at their use of non-female specific wording regarding abortion. Within minutes I'd been attacked by a legion of TRAs with manga profile photos. One delightful specimen managed to find my work website, and launched an attack there.

I should have stayed to fight, but I just feel like I'm too old and too weary to be waging war with little twits on social media.

Anyone else left Twitter, or gone back to fight the good fight??

I joined about two years ago, quickly had to look up meaning of TERF, and learned all about the threat posed by TRAs through Twitter. BUT - had to keep entirely silent because I'd by that time started following and being followed by hundreds of professional contacts. I saw a woman in my field being brought down and harassed - both on Twitter and IRL at work - for attending WPUK meetings and writing a GC blog post. I felt unable to say or do anything on that platform - the threat of professional consequences is so real. Keeping silent was traumatic. So against what I stand for. I've ceased using the account entirely.

I have set up an anonymous one though. Don't follow anyone I actually know - just lots of GC feminists. I use the account to comment every time Tampax of whatever use 'menstruator' rather than woman. Haven't been kicked off yet - but it's surely only a question of time.

NewlyGranny 'living as a boy' for them is strapping down their burgeoning breasts, wearing trousers to school and having a permanent scowl on. They were both girly girls when younger. Also very spoiled.

DodoPatrol · 21/11/2020 15:52

@Lebranic

I am not sure, but I am a little suspicious as two of my close friends have daughters who have been into manga/anime and both have now started living as boys.
That’s how my young relative started out. Now she’s had a double mastectomy at under 20 and is on testosterone.

I cannot see this as an altogether harm-free thing, let’s say.

Re: men calling women 'Karens'

Report these comments. I've been reporting in FB groups and even on reddit and they were removed fairly quickly.

What is it with the animé/manga avatars? You just know they're going to be activists. I wonder whether, having re-designed themselves in the virtual world, they're convinced they can do the same in reality.

Yes I think that's definitely part of it. People not going along with their fantasy version of themselves as a dainty Japanese cartoon porn star breaks this spell. So they hate us for it.

VulvaPerson · 21/11/2020 19:16

Been off there for months now. Since a TRA pile on during which I had many colourful threats of violence, a few rape threats and one specific stalker type who somehow managed to find out the name of ym kids school and threatened to turn up to let them know their mother was a 'scummy terf who hates trans people' Hmm My kids would not even understand what they were one about, given the oldest is 7, but still, the thought of this mentally ill man turning up to blast my CHILDREN scared the shit out of me. He did go quiet once he realised I have a husband mind, but still. It scared me enough to leave. I read it sometimes. And I know scaring us away is the goal, but I cannot risk it again. No idea how they found out that anyway, much better 'techys' than me it seems.

This is horrifying. I'm so sorry it happened to you. It's precisely what I'm afraid of. The thought of a mentally unstable TRA knowing anything about my daughter makes my blood run cold.

I think I was reported by one of these anime/manga types after posting about biological fact (which they obviously don't care for).
My last post on twitter was late October and the response to my post by one of these little nerds was "OK, emailed username".
Since then I have been unable to access twitter - wrong username, wrong email address - really?
So, I Googled my twitter username and promptly found all my posting history and the so called offending post.
I think this little "network" is well entwined in twitter, and to be honest, for my own sanity if the game is rigged, then I am out.

Pudmyboy · 21/11/2020 23:48

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

I got banned for saying that TWANW.

They invited me to 'correct my thinking'. I invited them to 'Fuck Off To The Other Side Of Fuck And Then Fuck Off Some More!

It's a vile, stinking cesspit of misogyny!

This made me laugh so much! Thank you!

Never joined but lurked on Twitter, lots of professionally offended people that don’t seem to materialise in real life, lots of fakery. Don’t take it personally OP, it’s a troll breading ground.

This is true. The japanese anime porn is horrific and very real threat to young girls. Alot of youngsters are addicted to it and it features incest, abuse of children, animal abuse etc. Most parents haven't a clue about this new trend, and certainly those with manga profiles are usually part of that online world.
Melroses · 22/11/2020 00:25

@ClaireP20

Me, I commented on a programme I liked (Strike) which had been - apparently- written by JK Rowling...got madly attacked by Trans nutjob activists. Of course we all know they are 14 year old losers with nothing better to do other than be addicted to japanese manga porn, but why oh why are they all on Twitter??? I also sent a few furious messages but then cancelled twitter. I'm back on now but rarely look. I follow julie burchill, to give me strength when I need it! (She has 'terf' in her bio so clearly doesn't care) x
I read this and went off to follow Julie Birchill and it turned out she was following me all along

I had a job finding her even so - she didn't come up in search - you would have thought your own followers would be high up Hmm

bingowingsmcgee · 22/11/2020 00:30

two hopes I know what you mean, but I do love that you scroll down the comments and as far as you can go there are people taking the piss out of the sheer lunacy. The more 'emperor's new clothes' -spotters to ridicule the absurdity of the language the better, imo.

JetsetJetlaggedJaded · 22/11/2020 07:42

I've just been suspended from twitter for "evading permanent suspension", even though I've never been permanently suspended (only been temporarily suspended for 24 hours twice for saying TWANW)

I've appealed but it's been nearly a week and I've heard nothing so far, so Im not hopeful about getting my account back

In some ways it's good because I DID tend to get sucked into never-ending arguments with manga tw*ts, but I'm also really sad about losing my follow list of amazing women.

I've seen there have been a couple of notable suspensions this week - ellawit hwood and intersexfacts, both of whom I really enjoyed following

If they keep going this way, twitter will end up losing the users who generate the most content

Oh I think you're right Andy. Troll CursedE and Aimee Challenor both talked about their 'contact' in the Irish office, and Linda Riley said she would "talk to someone" about Rachel McKinonnon's suspension for the 'grease fire' tweet, and lo and behold McKinnon's account was swiftly reinstated.

This is the bizarre thread which ended my twitter stay.

I heard about intersex facts getting the boot. For saying ''yeah it did dude''. Ridiculous. I think there's a petition to get the account reinstated?

Guess the activists couldn't stand someone who actually knows what they're talking about calling bullshit on their disrespectful misinformation.

I think intersexfacts left a mark and people learned a lot from them(I certainly did), so hopefully people will continue correcting the made up tripe when they see it.

I got into a spat with what I know is a famous women's rugby player, hiding behind her business name. She had @ the RFU into an event for young grassroots female players that her company had helped put together. It was just after the RFU had announced that male bodied players were to be allowed to play alongside women, so of course there were some opinions and questions asked.

She got quite irate and demanded I tell her what I did to support grassroots rugby, having seen no mention of it in my Twitter bio or posting history. She then tried to doxx me by going through similar usernames thinking they might be me (they weren't) and using a name she thought was mine (it wasn't).

She's deleted it now but I've taken screen shots.

It was quite bizarre and rather frightening and have had to lock my social media right down.

I'm on it. Spend far too much time on it at the moment (off work spinal injury) GC and getting braver.

I totally get that so much is vile. But i also want to be there to respond to madness around self id and erasing language around women- too many companies over the last fortnight have been talking about "vulva owners" etc. I do like following journalists directly for maybe better quality info. My son had a neurological condition and its v useful to hear of experiences and research etc internationally.

I expect I'll go back to lower levels when I'm back at work... or if I think my mental health needs to.
