Twitter - what an absolute cesspit

I had to deactivate my account last night. I feel like an absolute coward for doing so, and I will probably reactivate at some point. But wow...

I happened to comment on a post from Planned Parenthood, expressing disappointment at their use of non-female specific wording regarding abortion. Within minutes I'd been attacked by a legion of TRAs with manga profile photos. One delightful specimen managed to find my work website, and launched an attack there.

I should have stayed to fight, but I just feel like I'm too old and too weary to be waging war with little twits on social media.

Anyone else left Twitter, or gone back to fight the good fight??

I’m on Twitter only because I think there’s really useful stuff on it - like the Ross Tucker stuff on sports, World Rugby guidelines and the studies it’s based on, gov guidelines etc. I feel I need to have evidence at my fingertips given all the rubbish going on at the moment.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 20/11/2020 11:47

I never joined twitter and I never will, its just wall to wall misogyny as far as I can tell. Same with reddit. Apart from MN I have an account on Facebook, where I have unfollowed every single person I know apart from my mother and use it exclusively for a few women only groups to do with my study area, breastfeeding, and vegan recipes. I operate a one strike policy, if I start seeing sexist shit popping up I leave the group and find another. In general I try to spend as little time on social media as possible and my life is infitely better for it.

yourhairiswinterfire · 20/11/2020 11:55

I gave up on there ages ago. Absolute shithole. I gave up when I saw "MAP's" (known as nonces back in the real world) talking freely about their preferences, but women aren't allowed to know what a woman is Hmm

And what's the deal with grown men posting gifs of girls (I think it's K-Pop?) that look 11 years old dancing as some kind of 'argument'? I've seen that type of thing a lot. "I'll smash your fucking face in" followed by a kid dancing Confused Completely unhinged.

I do pop on to check out some women's groups occasionally, I don't have an account anymore though, so don't engage. The less I'm on there, the better.

SunsetBeetch · 20/11/2020 11:58

I left a few months ago. I was so tired of just what you've experienced. I also felt I needed to jump in and defend any GC posters. It's exhausting, and considering what an echo chamber twitter is, ultimately pointless imo. I'll still go on and have a read of anything relevant to keep up to date, but I was tired of all the negative interactions.

(Although lots of the GC twitter users were great craic.)

Melroses · 20/11/2020 12:01

I think of it as a network of sewer pipes and drains.

There are a few nice bits. Mainly wildlife and kittens. The charity and commercial stuff is dire.

Unfortunately, some think of it as their connection to the proletariat.

twoHopes · 20/11/2020 12:04

They're just trolls and they're doing whatever they think will get a rise out of you. I once posted that I thought it was wrong to tell children they are "born in the wrong body" and experienced a Twitter pile which is when I decided it was pointless and damaging to my mental health.

But the pile on was all about how my children must hate me for being a horrible old bigoted boomer and how they dearly hope my children aren't gay or trans because I'm a child abuser and so on. I don't even have kids! I'm a millennial. They just say whatever they think will upset you the most. It's playground stuff.

persistentwoman · 20/11/2020 12:11

I'm not on twitter and agree with all the points made here. BUT - I would like to offer a sincere thank you to all the women and decent men who are on there in significant numbers and call out all the woke charities, politicians and companies working so hard to erode women's rights and child safeguarding.
You are awesome and apparently in increasing numbers. Until the media stops using twitter as a reference point all your posts are so important. So thank you. Flowers

CatsCantCatchCriminals2 · 20/11/2020 12:13

Actually that's a good point persistantwoman.

WineTheBobbin · 20/11/2020 12:15

it's not just twitter though. It seems to worst but its all social media. Our local facebook group is awful. If a woman comments anything there's always men popping up to call them a 'Karen'. It just feels like women's rights are going backwards.

MorrisZapp · 20/11/2020 12:16

I've deleted my profile three times now. Now running a nice account featuring vaccine news, US politics and my favourite writers and comedians.

I know I'll get sucked back in to GC twitter but right now it feels like a lovely holiday.

queenofknives · 20/11/2020 12:28

I'm another one who left for the sake of my mental health. Since then I'm much happier and saner. I don't use any social media (except mumsnet! and I don't want to be here as much since they've put the notifications thing up - it feels too much like SM and combined with all the insane deletions makes me think MN has been captured). I think journalists and MPs and business people need to get the fuck off twitter too, and start living in the real world again, instead of trying to make the real world more like twitter. That way, disaster lies.

Couldn't agree more.

SmallPug · 20/11/2020 12:37

I am on Twitter for work and publicly gender critical. I agree it’s awful and not good for mental health, but I do find useful things out that way, lots of information about what’s going on. I’m not sure how to disengage but would love to. Obviously I’m here and get emails from various orgs like woman’s place too.

SmallPug · 20/11/2020 12:39

On Angela Rayner’s tweet - SO many people asking what they’re doing about Rosie Duffield. They may as well be changing ‘burn the witch’ - we clearly haven’t moved on much in the last 400 or so years.

ImaSababa · 20/11/2020 12:39

This has made me feel better!

OP posts:
Gooseybby · 20/11/2020 12:41

Twitter is an echo chamber/bubble; what can seem the majority view on there because people have developed the ability to flood is not the majority view in the real world.

NotTerfNorCis · 20/11/2020 12:46

I'm on Twitter with two accounts, but neither deals with genderism.

I once had a strange individual start attacking someone on one of my threads for 'transphobia'. It was completely out of the blue. The person being attacked cringed and grovelled. I kept well out of it. There are too many of these aggrieved and nasty people around.

Duckwit · 20/11/2020 12:50

@Gooseybby

This is what I always remind myself.

I have an account to follow my kids school, but I never post or even like anything. Which means I can read everything as I'm not blocked by anyone but don't have to put up with any bullshit Smile

twoHopes · 20/11/2020 12:52

I'm probably going to piss some people off by saying this but I really think the pile-ons by GC feminists I see on Twitter are doing damage to the gender critical cause. Someone will post something stupid and egregious about "uterus owners" or whatever and you'll see hundreds of women replying. I don't think the original tweeter will change their mind, they'll probably just feel angry and upset. And from an outsiders perspective I think it looks a bit like an ambush or a disproportionate attack and doesn't necessarily win sympathy for the cause.

Willing to hear opposing views on this as I'm sure there will be people here that disagree with me.

Backbee · 20/11/2020 12:53

Twitter is grim, and full of sad low lives who have zero intelligent arguments, hate actual facts and so resort to bullying, intimidation, and getting personal.

Backbee · 20/11/2020 12:53

@twoHopes so people should just shut up? Where do you think we will be if no one challenges the erosion of language that mentions women?

twoHopes · 20/11/2020 12:56

@twoHopes so people should just shut up? Where do you think we will be if no one challenges the erosion of language that mentions women?

No absolutely not. I just think if 20 women have already replied saying "this is stupid and offensive" then we don't need another 200 to pile in afterwards.

andyoldlabour · 20/11/2020 12:57

I joined twitter back in September and was commentating mainly on sports stuff, Ross Tucker, Fairplay for Women. Around 3 weeks ago, I found that I couldn't login, kept saying my email and username didn't exist. I tried to create another account using the same details, but it said the username had already been taken. I had a few run ins with the usual suspects, which resultd in the expected cartoon pictures of people with baseball bats.
I can only assume that I have been banned?

NotTerfNorCis · 20/11/2020 12:57

twoHopes I don't agree. It makes me feel more optimistic to see so many people speaking out against nonsense. If they didn't, I might start to believe what TRAs say - that gender criticism is just a tiny fringe opinion and most people support genderism.
