Seemingly permanently - essentially for saying that it's not hatred to say that biological sex is real and that focussing on 'gender assigned at birth' notions is not all that helpful during a pandemic.

Jane's account is one of the most polite and thoughtful I've seen, and she has been instrumental in generating support from people who care about free speech for JK Rowling (she was one of the original signatories of the recent letter defending her, which was opened up to the public and now has more than 20,000 signatures).

Social media censorship of gender critical accounts has reached new levels of extremism in the last few days.

You know why, though, nutmeg. It's the main tactic and always has been and the pushback against has been gaining ground.

It makes me angry when women are traduced like this, and I have always appreciated your presence on Twitter, and respect what you do, but I'm firmly of the opinion that the quicker it descends into a pointless echo chamber of the perverts, creeps, dullards and influencer celebs that is only ever clicked on by accident, the better.

On the whole, women are much better off well shot of it.

EdgeOfACoin · 17/10/2020 08:32

It shows they're scared of the arguments.

Strange, though, as I keep hearing TRAs claim: "no one is saying that biological sex doesn't exist".

FindTheTruth · 17/10/2020 08:38

Saw this interesting take on it twitter.com/JamesUnfettered/status/1317116429641129985

I treat gender as I do religion, homeopathy, or astrology. I recognise that they exist. I respect other people's right to believe in them if they want to, on condition they don't harm others. I don't believe in them though and I'll certainly never be bullied into pretending I do

ripx4nutmeg · 17/10/2020 08:38

It's a paradox for me FloralBunting.

On the one hand having a Twitter account has proven to be incredibly useful in what I view as the most important achievement I can do: Raising awareness re what's going on; I've had people tell me my tweets played a role in alerting them to what's going on re trans activism. I don't have the vlogging skills to be on YouTube and don't want the risk to losing anonymity by being on Facebook, probably the other two giant platforms.

On the other hand Twitter is a cesspit. There are now paedophiles operating openly on it, abuse of women is encouraged and the only thing liberal about the platform is its application of censorship to anyone who doesnt have a woke view. I hope to see it crash one day

You explain exactly why I won't return to Twitter Nutmeg.

It's a catch 22 as it's the platform for work and global connection and well as news and trends etc but I can't get past the MAPs and the misogyny.

There are more niché platforms beginning but Twitter is the mainstream and I feel my hand is being forced to get involved and I don't like it.

KatVonlabonk · 17/10/2020 08:44

I love both you and Jane on Twitter, Nutmeg, but it is a cesspit.

Toxic dump of humanity

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/10/2020 08:50

I wonder if Twitter are straying into indirect sex discrimination in the provision of their services. Women are getting banned for stating facts but men are not getting banned for abuse.

KatVonlabonk · 17/10/2020 08:50

The danger with the whole way it works is a few loud voices are amplified. Pile ons seem like consensus. Niche groups are undermining fairness.

Women fighting back there have showed the powers that be, that two can play at that game. It shouldn't be like that. We shouldn't have to do it to defend our rights.

The debate should never have happened like that, there was no choice.

Social media has got ahead of society and is playing by its own rules.

FindTheTruth · 17/10/2020 08:53

Spot on Chaz, the examples are all there. People must be allowed defend the right to not believe in a religion.

I think twitter stomped into direct discrimination of women some time ago.

Indirect discrimination on the basis of sex under the Equality Act might be easier to show than direct discrimination. If Twitter’s moderation policy disadvantages women as they are being blocked while suck my lady dick abuse stands then that might be a breach. Especially as the PC for transgender is gender reassignment so nobody without a GRC can claim discrimination under the Act.

JKRowlingforever · 17/10/2020 09:29

You're probably right @flo "the quicker it descends into a pointless echo chamber of the perverts, creeps, dullards and influencer celebs that is only ever clicked on by accident, the better." But it's definitely been useful for me till raise public awareness about trans issues

AmandaHoldensLips · 17/10/2020 09:34

I got banned for a week for saying that child rapists should be castrated.

It would be very unfortunate for Twitter if the banned women got together and launched legal action for indirect discrimination, goodness knows there are enough of them now for it to be clear just how many have been banned.

^..... please, yes. do this.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 17/10/2020 09:56

And yet all those tweets mocking Magdalen Bern's death are still there.

No misogyny here folks, no none at all!

Winesalot · 17/10/2020 10:05

She will be missed.

The blatant inequality between having women’s voices silenced vs the abuse of women is incredible. Hard to miss.

FloralBunting · 17/10/2020 10:06

Underlining again that I greatly respect the women who stay to raise consciousness. I know you're all very aware that you could be the next target and the best to hope for is that their abusive behaviour brings sunlight.

We all make choices about which platforms we use strategically. Solidarity with other women, always.✊

Outwithreason · 17/10/2020 13:44

@ripx4nutmeg I just tried to look at your Twitter & was asked if I wanted to view it as it had unusual activity. I don't have an account. Is this normal?

MouseandCat · 17/10/2020 13:56

yes I have been worried to see your account Ripx4 on restricted access. I hope you stay on twitter. You are a wonderful feminist news feed. I look at your account nearly every day. Thank you

howard97A · 17/10/2020 15:01

What’s ‘liberal’ about censorship? Have I misunderstood?

stella47 · 17/10/2020 15:33

I think nutmeg means liberal as "plentiful" as in "apply liberally" :)

ripx4nutmeg · 17/10/2020 15:34

My account is currently suspended, although everyone can see it. The suspension is due to end tomorrow. The tweet that got me suspended was tame under any definition (I said I don't think Marci Bowers has the best interests of their patients at heart if 80-90% of their phalloplasties result in 'complications') but this feels particularly sinister given the abuse aimed at women at the same time, including McKinnon retweeting images mocking Magdalen Berns for dying, which was posted at almost exactly the same time.

On top of that I initially was allowed to direct message people during the suspension, but that was removed after 36 hours. Facebook at the same time also censored me the moment I started following gender critical pages (Posie Parker has also had her account on Facebook locked until, I think, after the US election for no sane reason).

howard97a - I meant Twitter 'liberally censors people' with liberally's other definition of 'greatly'. A very clever pun which clearly didn't work ☺️
