Am I going to look like a complete eejit?

I was trying to set up a profile for my daughter on the Zoe covid reporting app. My son has tested positive for covid and wanted to add the whole family as symptomatic etc
They asked what sex she was assigned at birth and I saw red and stopped setting it up and emailed them to say it was a ridiculous question as sex is observed. May have ranted slightly. They’re going to think I’m bonkers aren’t they? So fed up with this shit though. Just feeling a bit embarrassed now and I don’t feel well so I’m all doom and gloom.

If data is corrupted because people are encouraged to lie on a medical form or survey about their sex class observed at birth, people will die . Trying not to offend people who don't want to admit their real sex should hardly be the priority here.

334bu · 18/10/2020 17:02

"People aren't dying because of this silly app! What a load of hyperbole."

Are all treatments of Covid equally successful in females and male patients? Do we know? Is anyone checking?
Women die from heart attacks because the medication was developed for men. Are the drugs being used in ICUs tested on females or are they just tested on men? Do more men or women get Covid? Who are at most risks? Disaggregated sex data is very important . So people might indeed die because of " this silly app"

ArabellaScott · 18/10/2020 17:04

You're not the only one to raise it, OP. Well done. Hope you feel better soon. x

They aren't being encouraged to lie. They just use the word assigned instead of observed. And obviously this is more important to some people than taking part in a potentially life-saving research project, which is cool, up to you, it's pretty far out though.
334bu · 18/10/2020 17:37

As I don't have the luxury of knowing that my sex has been taken into account when I am prescribed drugs for potentially life threatening illnesses nor that my treatment regimes will have been rigourously tested on others of my sex class, I feel quite entitled to say fuck off to anyone who tries to obscure or falsify medical research data because they don't want to admit what sex they really are and insist that the medical research field indulges their fantasy.

InflamatoryWrit · 18/10/2020 17:51

I think NCone was making the point that the phrasing was changed to fit an ideology, not science.

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 18/10/2020 18:42

Assigned and observed are not interchangeable words.

"What sex were you assigned at birth?" cannot be answered truthfully because our sex is not assigned at birth; the only answer that isn't a lie is "I wasn't." Guessing that's not an option?

pombear · 18/10/2020 18:49

@Skyliner001

I just heard an advert this afternoon on a talk radio station asking for 'men who've had covid-19' as important as they may have antibodies. Pretty sure it's related to this type of news:

inews.co.uk/nhs/nhs-appeal-men-blood-plasma-donor-coronavirus-latest-628512

Almost 74,000 women have offered to donate through the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) website since the convalescent plasma programme started – much higher than the 42,809 men who have done so. Men are far more likely to donate a unit of plasma with a high level of antibodies, NHSBT said

I doubt NHSBT are talking about 'people who identify as men' here.

I don't think it's Butterflybitch who's looking like a complete eejit right now, do you?

museumum · 18/10/2020 18:53

I think it’s utterly ridiculous wording for all but the tiny % who are genuinely intersex and medical professionals cannot tell.

BUT right now it’s the only “pc” way to ask the right question - what external sex organs were you born with - so I don’t mind answering it.

DeaconBoo · 18/10/2020 18:53

Think they zoomed off a long time ago pom!

pombear · 18/10/2020 18:56

S'alright Deacon, point stands, even if original discussion was a few days ago, I think?

Thanks pombear. Can’t believe someone called me sociopathic. Grin
Still haven’t had a reply from the Zoe app. Not expecting one though.

Well you could argue sex is assigned based on observation.

But really who cares? It's obvious what it means. Surely what's important is them getting data from as many people as possible instead of squabbling about semantics. Over a million deaths and counting and this is what people are worried about? Dear me, what a state this country is at the moment.

Pedantic, but it is not asking what external sex organs you were born with. It is asking what was your sex was assigned as. As if sex is possibly arbitrary, and no disrespect to DSD issues but the midwife will in the huge majority of cases observe a sex but not assign it.
JellyFishSquish · 18/10/2020 19:18

And if this is true, why did someone feel strongly that the original wording, asking for sex, had to be re-worded to "assigned at birth"?. Instead of saying well, let's not be squabbling about semantics.

Well for those who believe sex is “assigned” clearly midwives “assign” femal to those with vaginas and male to those with penis and testes. So it amounts to the same as “what genitalia were you born with”.

FairFriday · 18/10/2020 19:39

How ‘assigned’ exactly? Flip a coin, roll a dice, throw a dart, eeny-meeny, boy-girl-boy-girl, I’m really curious. What gives the game away? How often are they right?

Wtaf? Confused

FairFriday · 18/10/2020 19:44

Oh - that makes sense... could cause some issues in early days schooling if kiddo attends a single sex school.

Who cares, really for the purpose of this app?. They probably changed it to assigned at birth to specify they meant physical sex as opposed to legal or self identified sex. In other words to make the data more accurate. But is this really a hill to die on (or more specifically let others die on) given the gravity of the situation? Are you going to feel proud when we've got 100,000 dead looking back saying well I was going to help in the fight against COVID but I didn't like the way they worded a question so I boycotted it instead? Do you have any idea how fucking entitled that sounds?
FairFriday · 18/10/2020 19:48

It’s stupid.

ButterflyBitch · 18/10/2020 19:58

I don’t think entering the fact that my dd had a positive case or not entering it will cause 100,000 people to die. Hmm
I’ve entered all info onto the track and trace app. The Zoe app is a voluntary app that not everyone uses anyway. Bit dramatic there jj

Yeah, bit dramatic, jj. Is there some kind of agenda? [chinny reckon emoji that does not exist in MN inserted here]
