First time I've seen a piece like this in the Manchester Evening News

Double mastectomy not ‘top surgery’

Amazing how a woman needs to do a mastectomy to be non binary but all a bloke needs to do is put on some eyeliner and lippy. No bottom surgery required.

And if I'm reading it correctly she's a Butch lesbian in old money?

The misogyny and homophobia stinks but we're the phobic one's. Hmm

SocialMedea · 16/08/2020 12:48

I that was my child it would upset me so much. I think it would affect my mental well being.

ThePurported · 16/08/2020 12:50

I hope this person finds peace, whatever they end up doing/not doing to their body.

But Manchester Evening News can fuck off promoting this as a Good Thing.

And binders are not like sports bras.

ContentiousOne · 16/08/2020 12:51

It does.

It is hard to watch your own child being brainwashed into thinking a double mastectomy is the answer to a complex set of problems.

Cutting writ large, and socially sanctioned. And you are a hateful bigot for expressing concern.

LittleHootie · 16/08/2020 12:52

Oh well better than nhs funds going on it.

Kantastic · 16/08/2020 12:54

What is the mentality that could induce someone to give to this instead of their local food bank?

I can just about understand being uncritical to the point of thinking this is a good cause - though tbh I have very little sympathy with anyone whose bullshit detector doesn't go off at "nonbinary."

Never in a million years could I understand how someone could think this is a better cause than anything else they could donate money to.

Deliriumoftheendless · 16/08/2020 12:59

I wonder how a young women who was slim but had a bit of extra belly fat that caused her to refuse to go out some times for feeling fat would be seen if she set up a crowd finder for lipo?

thehumanformerlyknownasfemale · 16/08/2020 13:00

It’s never been a big revelation; I knew I wasn’t ever a woman and I’d always see the ‘cool guys’ on TV but never wanted to be them either. I was just me

Isn't that how most people feel? Just 'us'. It's a perfectly normal feeling.

I know Maj is an adult and it's their body, but this is a crying shame.

It's also a massive contradiction when we have trans women telling us we have to accept that their penis is a 'female penis' because a dick isn't exclusive to males, and vaginas aren't exclusive to females, yet young women are having their female breasts removed.

:(

totallyyesno · 16/08/2020 13:00

This is awful. Why would a dr agree to do this? Surely it's against the hippocratic oath? Maj- if you read this board at all, you can be non-binary without changing your body. Please wait, please don't do this. Sad

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 16/08/2020 13:04

What an extraordinary article to read in a newspaper. No wonder print media is going under- why would anyone pay for that?

StrangeLookingParasite · 16/08/2020 13:05

I've never felt a connection to any gender either This does not require surgery.

Oh, and this "“The closest gay bar to me was five hours north in Brisbane" - that would be five hours by plane if she lived in Castlemaine (which is a bit hippyish lentil-weavery), and really, there's nothing in Melbourne? Not a thing? Or in Sydney (which is closer than Brisbane)?

Liar.

ThePurported · 16/08/2020 13:16

Why would a dr agree to do this?

That part is obvious.

thepostmillennial.com/young-canadians-are-being-sold-gender-affirming-top-surgery-on-instagram/

"The primary destination for top surgery in Ontario is the McLean Clinic, run by Dr. Hugh A. McLean, who has himself performed hundreds of top surgeries and who is not shy about promoting his clinic as a place where gender-fluidity dreams come true.

On the clinic’s Instagram page you can see dozens of photos of post-op FTM (female-to-male) clients posing bare-chested and happy. The clinic cheers on their patients—and prospective patients—with encouraging posts such as “Postop one day! What a way to start the holiday season. Nice job, Dr. McLean!” and “Ready for a topless summer.” Some of the females seem extremely young. Other adolescents comment, “I can’t wait to have this surgery too!” “I’m jealous!” In one photo, fellow surgeon Dr. Giancarlo McEvenue (more on him anon) wearing a mask and a Santa Claus hat holds up two buckets labelled “Breast tissue,” accompanied by a Dr McLean post: “For all you good boys, Dr McEvenue is not bringing gifts, he’s taking them away!”

ContentiousOne · 16/08/2020 13:18

Australia - so backward your mum is rightly worried about you undergoing serious surgery because 'you just feel like me'. Jesus.

gardenbird48 · 16/08/2020 13:21

Maj only made the decision about non binary earlier this year! That is such a short amount of time for a life changing decision. The waiting list for such surgery on the NHS is three years - are there any other elective major surgery procedures available on the NHS? Referring to a previous thread, if Maj was Body Dysmorphic and identifies as an amputee would the surgeon oblige and amputate a healthy limb? And would the code of conduct for what ever regulatory body (Royal College of Surgeons?) support this?

highame · 16/08/2020 13:23

Over here on 2 year visa, parents wont pay and obviously do not like the idea, so UK maybe the best option but I wouldn't put any cash in. Perhaps friends in media recommended Newspaper as a last resort

bellinisurge · 16/08/2020 13:26

I saw this (I'm local to it) and the Twitter comments included things like " I've always felt I should live in a four bedroom house, please fund my loft conversion ".Grin
If people want to pay for some adult's self indulgence, let them be so stupid.

I feel about 15 years younger, please crowdfund my time machine.

ArabellaScott · 16/08/2020 13:49

I suppose it's not really very much different than breast enlargement or reduction, is it? Is the procedure different?

Women often have such a difficult relationship with their breasts, it's sad.

Thingybob · 16/08/2020 13:55

Regarding non-binary surgery, I've recently read several posts on social media about there supposedly being a need for a defining non binary genital procedure that would be suitable for both male and female bodied people.

OldCrone · 16/08/2020 14:07

“I feel like I’ve always known that I didn’t have a connection to any gender,” Maj says.

“But I came to terms with being non-binary a few months ago when I realised I had to identify as something more clear to other people."

No surgeon should be carrying out this procedure, knowing that she is doing this for the sake of 'other people'.

Changing your body in order to conform to what you believe other people expect of you is not healthy.

icedbun5 · 16/08/2020 14:16

There are gay bars in Bendigo never mind Melbourne. Five hours my arse.

She's only just decided and now she won't wait three years for a NHS operation. 🙄

Beni1993 · 16/08/2020 14:20

I thought feminism was about women's rights to live their life without judgement, without feeling pressured to be any kind of way that society says they should be. Guess I was mistaken and definitely not a feminist anymore

SheeshSheesh · 16/08/2020 14:23

I imagine her parents feel utterly powerless being thousands of miles away. Why can’t the breasts stay attached to the non-binary body? As someone said, the male penis can become a female penis so why doesn’t the magic work the other way? These fundraisers are all over Instagram what are M.E.N. playing at? Maybe they should have juxtaposed that ‘advertorial’ with a plea for funds for a local homeless shelter or funds for Beirut just to emphasise it’s total inappropriateness. I hope that person is offered some counselling and support to properly think this through rather than ready cash to fund this serious surgical procedure.

GoshHashana · 16/08/2020 14:31

Fucking hell...
