Private Eye reports that Jenni Murray is retiring from Woman’s Hour, at least partly because she is banned from discussing trans issues, meaning the JK Rowling article wasn’t covered for over 48 hrs.

Haven forbid that women should be allowed words that describe us.

In related news the Scottish Government have just received notice of legal action for this very thing.

How long will WH take to report on this?

OvaHere · 31/07/2020 12:57

*Heaven

Bloody autocorrect. Although I'm sure Haven do indeed hold opinions on what a woman is such is the fashion in the corporate world currently! Grin

Redshoeblueshoe · 31/07/2020 12:58

Women's Hour first alerted me to all this.
Now I barely listen to R4.
The BBC hate women.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/07/2020 12:59

Banned?! Holy fuck.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 31/07/2020 13:00

Its a sad time for the bbc and womans hour isnt it.
More censoring and a voice for woman lost.

wellbehavedwomen · 31/07/2020 13:02

It's the same as Network Rail: being a Stonewall Diversity Champion doesn't prevent neutrality, despite Stonewall being the leading trans lobby group in the country, but having a view that supports women's rights as a sex class does.

Just astonishing levels of patriarchal bigotry, right there. Women are support humans and must never assert their own interests or rights at all.

sashh · 31/07/2020 13:05

Anyone else thinking she should start a podcast?

OvaHere · 31/07/2020 13:15

Yes this!

Campervan69 · 31/07/2020 13:24

Yes she should definitely start a podcast. This is terrible. So a programme for women is banned from discussing issues that women want to discuss.

wellbehavedwomen · 31/07/2020 13:27

I'd love a podcast by her. Imagine one where she could be free to express her own thoughts on all subjects? She's a fascinating journalist.

LittleCabbage · 31/07/2020 13:30

I'm sorry for her that it has come to this, but look forward to hearing her uncensored voice from other platforms.

Cuntysnark · 31/07/2020 13:34

I cannot wait to hear her in all her uncensored glory.

sleepwhenidie · 31/07/2020 13:35

Maybe she will join Times Radio, pretty sure they would let her discuss this!

OldCrone · 31/07/2020 13:35

This is the article which got her banned from commenting on trans issues on women's hour.

Julia Hartley-Brewer should have Jenni on after she retires for a frank conversation about freedom of speech. Twitter would self-combust.

LittleCabbage · 31/07/2020 14:16

Can anyone do a share token for Jenni's Times article mentioned above?

sunshinesupermum · 31/07/2020 14:23

This is part of what Jenni wrote:

India held firmly to her belief that she was a “real woman”, ignoring the fact that she had spent all of her life before her transition enjoying the privileged position in our society generally accorded to a man. In a discussion about the Dorchester hotel’s demands that its female staff should always wear make-up, have a manicure and wear stockings over shaved legs, she was perfectly happy to go along with such requirements. There wasn’t a hint of understanding that she was simply playing into the stereotype — a man’s idea of what a woman should be.

I thought that as soon as I saw the topic, bet the Times has thought it too

Me too - I enjoy listening to her on pretty much every issue. She has a good radio voice.
nepeta · 31/07/2020 15:20

I hate hearing this on the same day I found that the American Cancer Society talks about men with prostate cancer but uses individual with a cervix for women. Will this ever end?

YouUnlockedTheGateAnd · 31/07/2020 17:21

Well, maybe being ruled over by a chain of holiday parks might be preferable to the current political parties. I make no comment on celestial rule obvs.

VinylDetective · 31/07/2020 17:25

Sad day for women everywhere. I like her so much better than Jane Garvey.

frazzled1 · 31/07/2020 18:02

Sad day for women everywhere.

Absolutely. Sorry to see her go.

Private Eye also nailed who should replace Dame Jenni.... Wink

Oh gosh, yes please!
