So Owen Jones has written a piece about racism

Talking about Wiley and his anti Semitism.

It’s the usual waffle you’d expect from him, racism is colonial, why are we talking about Wiley when we could be talking about Tommy Robinson etc etc.

But he used a picture of the wrong black man.

Black people do not all look the same, Owen Jones. There’s no fucking excuse.

I’m so sick of these right on woke bros screeching at everyone to ‘do better’ when they need to check the glass in their own greenhouse first.

It’s not even really feminism, but I can’t stand the hypocrisy

Yes, I saw this. There's no justification for this at all. They also printed an incorrect photo of Denise Johnson too.

Annasgirl · 29/07/2020 12:45

Don't worry OP, it doesn't have to be strictly feminism and also, this is probably the only board on MN where people know who OJ is Grin.

And yes, hypocrite is usually the middle name of these left wing men's activists.

DidoLamenting · 29/07/2020 12:45

Link please- that is hilarious.

highame · 29/07/2020 12:45

You could't make it up 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

EverardDigby · 29/07/2020 12:48

I hate OJ as much as the next woman, but was this down to him or the newspaper?

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 29/07/2020 12:49

Link here. The photo has been amended, and a note added about the error.
Here is a screen shot of the original, showing a picture of Kano.

You literally couldn’t make it up.
Putting a picture of the wrong black man in a piece about how racist everyone else is.

He’s a joke

So Owen Jones has written a piece about racism

I don’t think it matters, what matters is the guardian is putting out opinion pieces on how everyone else is racist, and using the picture of the wrong person.
It’s total irony overload.

OP posts:
nauticant · 29/07/2020 12:52

It will have been down to the newspaper EverardDigby. I really doubt it's Jones' fault in the sense of him saying "here's the photo to use in the publication". It is though a very amusing mistake from the woke camp.

tadpole39 · 29/07/2020 12:53

He has tweeted that he's horrified about this and has no editorial control, the pictures are chosen by editors and he fully understands the irony.

Jellyeggs · 29/07/2020 12:53

That’s amazing and excruciating. Oh Guardian Blush

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 29/07/2020 12:56

Like I said, I don’t think it matters whose fault it is, the fact that it’s happened, while attached to that particular piece, says it fucking all.

I’m sick of these left wing rags, and their racism and misogyny that they wrap up in sparkly paper and call progressive

OP posts:
PoppySeedSaid · 29/07/2020 12:57

It just shows you there is a race to be as woke as possible on any subject. Even if it's poorly researched and you think all black men look the same!

RoyalCorgi · 29/07/2020 13:12

It's not really the Guardian's fault either - the picture will have been misattributed by the picture agency. You could argue that the paper should have checked, but they'd have been under time pressure.

dolorsit · 29/07/2020 13:14

As much as I dislike OJ's writing the use of an incorrect photo will not be his fault.

However the Guardian also did the same in an article about Denise Johnson's death just a few days ago.

They need to fire their photo agency and their sub editors need to get their act together.

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 29/07/2020 13:18

It’s someone’s fault, and the buck stops with the guardian.
Someone should have checked, it’s unacceptable.
The fact that it’s attached to this kind of piece, talking about how racist other newspapers are, is just icing on the cake.

RoyalCorgi · 29/07/2020 13:21

Like any newspaper, the Guardian uses multiple photo agencies. I'd strongly suggest it's the photo agencies that need to get their act together and make sure their photos are correctly labelled.

As for the subs, well, yes, in an ideal world the subs would have checked the photo. But they'd have been working under pressure, and in any case it's not unreasonable to expect the photo agency to have done the basic job of labelling the photo correctly. That's pretty much the minimum you'd expect from an agency, frankly.

KingFredsTache · 29/07/2020 13:24

Yeah I cannot stand OJ but he wouldn't have chosen that photo himself and has tweeted to make that clear.

Still quite funny though - this is exactly the sort of thing that he and his ilk would go nuts about had it happened in another publication. Oooops! Grin

KingFredsTache · 29/07/2020 13:25

The fact that it’s attached to this kind of piece, talking about how racist other newspapers are, is just icing on the cake.

Exactly - it's almost poetic!

ChurchOfWokeApostate · 29/07/2020 13:26

Do you know what it is, it’s just really irksome that the guardian can make mistakes, but no one else can.

From them, this is an ironic and unfortunate mistake. It was the photo agency, they were time pressured, it was a mistake.

It would be a different story from them if it were someone else. No one else can make mistakes.

From anyone else it would be a micro aggression betraying their white privilege etc etc.

They need to get their house in order, it’s been pointed out they made a similar mistake not so long ago.

OP posts:
Rubidium · 29/07/2020 13:45

What's Jones got against blokes from Slough called Barry? Why is it OK to make generalisations about middle-aged English men?

TBHno · 29/07/2020 13:48

The Guardian doesn't even know what a woman is, so I'm not surprised by this really.

Yes, this exactly. We all make mistakes. We all act like nobs occasionally. But normal people don't try to sack, belittle, accuse and dox anyone who puts a toe out of line. Because that could be us.

The Guardian has completely lost perspective, and they want to take us all down with them.

This will be the new 'Karen' that these guys through about.

If he gave a damn about race then he could have easily stepped aside to let a back woman write something on the issue.

*The systems of racism and other bigotries – rather than individual racists and bigots – should be our starting point...

Unfortunately, our public discourse prefers theatrical debates about whether a person or statement is “racist” or “not racist” to a proper reckoning with how race functions as a system of power.*

Is he for real?! All OJ does all day is "call people out" on Twitter for being racist/homophobic/transphobic! Jesus Christ the irony of this article is off the scale.
