Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So Owen Jones has written a piece about racism

Talking about Wiley and his anti Semitism.

It’s the usual waffle you’d expect from him, racism is colonial, why are we talking about Wiley when we could be talking about Tommy Robinson etc etc.

But he used a picture of the wrong black man.

Black people do not all look the same, Owen Jones. There’s no fucking excuse.

I’m so sick of these right on woke bros screeching at everyone to ‘do better’ when they need to check the glass in their own greenhouse first.

It’s not even really feminism, but I can’t stand the hypocrisy

@ChurchOfWokeApostate

Do you know what it is, it’s just really irksome that the guardian can make mistakes, but no one else can.

From them, this is an ironic and unfortunate mistake. It was the photo agency, they were time pressured, it was a mistake.

It would be a different story from them if it were someone else. No one else can make mistakes.

From anyone else it would be a micro aggression betraying their white privilege etc etc.

They need to get their house in order, it’s been pointed out they made a similar mistake not so long ago.

This. So much this!!!
RoyalCorgi · 29/07/2020 14:54

Agree completely that the Guardian should be less sanctimonious about other people's mistakes. I'm 100% with that. I just feel for the poor subeditor who under pressure trying to get the copy ready for the morning paper took a photo from the picture agency without realising that it was wrongly labelled. Maybe that sub isn't some vile self-righteous wokester, just some poor sod trying to do their job the best they can and is now feeling really bad about the mistake.

Siablue · 29/07/2020 14:55

OJ really is all over the place. Especially on this issue first he was defending RLB and saying she shouldn’t have been sacked for antisemitism, then he was criticising the labour whistle blowers. Then he was sharing this document telling everyone how to recognise antisemitism. He should have read it himself as he hasn’t a clue.

Yes it would not have been his mistake but it is still funny it happened to him. 🤣

TheRealMcKenna · 29/07/2020 15:10

This mistake is going to live forever Every time they write an article about racism or racial stereotyping these screenshots are going to resurface. It’s great.

Can you image the wailing and gnashing of teeth had the Daily Mail made this error? There’d have been no ‘honest mistake’ forgiveness allowed.

NearlyGranny · 29/07/2020 15:18

He needs remaining of this mistake every time he is unforgiving of others' mistakes. And he needs to remember that a white person is not the best and most obvious choice to lecture the readership about racism, in case he begins to reel of smug white saviour complex.

I would suggest he needs a new profile pic in which he looks a smidge less smug, too, if he can manage it, but he might be suffering from RSF (resting smug face).

NearlyGranny · 29/07/2020 15:18

Reek, not reel.

GingerMcKenna · 29/07/2020 16:02

Resting Smug Face 🤣. I think OJ has a serious case of this.

I find the whole thing hilarious. Bet OJ didn’t spot the error all by himself, either. Bet nobody at the Guardian did. All to busy putting more woke cookies in their jar.

Vermeil · 29/07/2020 16:11

Look at it this way, live by the woke, die by the woke.
The sanctimonious little nobody is only one massive clanger away from the cancel culture he’s enthusiastically part of biting him hard upon the backside, as it does.
What will the clanger be? Place your bets, ladies!

zanahoria · 29/07/2020 16:20

OJ was a bit quiet on whether he actually noticed or not. Does he really know anything about the people he is writing about?

TBHno · 29/07/2020 16:31

Can you imagine how OJ would have reacted if a GC journalist had used a photo of the wrong trans women, or similar? I can imagine that he would never let them live it down.

nauticant · 29/07/2020 16:32

The Media Show on Radio 4 right now:

Agree.
FloralBunting · 29/07/2020 17:10

Pfft. Bet he didn't even notice until someone pointed it out. And he have made hay if another paper had dropped the same clanger. Arguably it's actually worse coming from a paper that sets itself up as an arbiter of all that is moral and upstanding. If you consider yourself the standard of righteousness over others and you fuck up, you deserve the shit you get.

KingFredsTache · 29/07/2020 17:12

You can just imagine one of his articles now if this had happened in another newspaper:

'White privilege and racist micro aggressions are endemic in the far right extremist bigoted, racist, anti-trans, homophobic, Islamophobic press, most recently evident when The Times wrote an article about the anti-semitic rapper Wiley but actually used a picture of the rapper Kano blah blah blah'.

Ha, I had been thinking I guarantee that it wasn't OJ himself who spotted that that wasn't a photo of Wiley Grin

Lol at resting smug face! There must be a better photo he can use as a profile picture surely?

Floisme · 29/07/2020 17:12

Leaving aside the photo, what a tortuous piece of writing that is.
It reminded me of when Laurie Penney tied herself up in knots trying to write about the Cologne assaults on women.

Dervel · 29/07/2020 17:28

Just out of interest how would a black person say be able to criticise the Israeli government for the forced sterilisation (supposedly temporarily) of black women without being subject to accusations of anti-demotion?

Dervel · 29/07/2020 17:29

Anti-semitism not anti-demotion.

zanahoria · 29/07/2020 18:36

It doesn't even have to be of him

NotBadConsidering · 29/07/2020 21:40

It’s also a hugely hypocritical piece, given Jones himself spreads misogynistic lies on Twitter, such as how JK Rowling was “spending Pride month baiting trans people and piling on queer people”.

Among many others. Typical of the extreme left. If they do it it’s righteous, if anyone else does it it’s “right wing hate speech”.

This is so true.

Can you imagine how fuming he is with whoever got that photo wrong and made him look like such an utter twat? 😂

highame · 29/07/2020 23:08

bit late but a picture of an arse might work, but then I bet even his arse looks smug

TehBewilderness · 30/07/2020 02:14

Wait till you see the video OJ posted of him whitesplaining wearing more cosmetics than Trump.

ItWasNotOK · 30/07/2020 02:22

My husband is East Asian. I remember a very very woke friend pointing out some other random Asian guy and saying "look there's your husband". I thought she was making an off colour joke as this guy looked nothing, and I mean NOTHING, like my husband. As in age, height, weight, skin tone were all miles off.

Nope. She genuinely thought it was him. I thought she might reign the wokeness in after that but she didn't.

ItWasNotOK · 30/07/2020 03:49

Here's what I don't get. OJ is apologising and then also retweeting people saying it's not his fault.

So which is it? Is he sorry or is does he not think it's fault?

The issue is not this one fuck up. It's the hypocrisy. Hold your hands up, say it shouldn't have happened and make sure there are steps in place so it doesn't happen again.

He doesn't seem to be bothered by the hurt this has caused the BAME community at all, but just in covering his own arse.
