Transwomen face being banned from playing rugby with women

World Rugby is considering banning trans women from playing women’s rugby because of significant safety concerns that have emerged following recent research...…… there is likely to be “at least a 20-30% greater risk” of injury when a female player is tackled by someone who has gone through male puberty....

I should jollywell think so

zafferana · 20/07/2020 15:45

Good! There should be no contact sports that allow male-bodied athletes to compete against females. Bloody dangerous.

Thelnebriati · 20/07/2020 15:46

In the UK, this is in line with exemptions in The Equality Act. Rugby is a contact sport, and mixed sex rugby has never been encouraged.

EmpressoftheMundane · 20/07/2020 15:46

Good

okiedokieme · 20/07/2020 15:56

I have a trans (f-m) who plays rugby on a men's team, they are really accepting! I hope this won't mean he can't play

ktp100 · 20/07/2020 16:03

It's the only sensible option, really.

Sometimes decisions are about safety, rather than people's rights. I'm sure that trans woman wouldn't want to be responsible for causing serious harm to another woman.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/07/2020 16:08

Transmen can still chose to play on men's teams. The ruling is it is unsafe for Transwomen to play on female teams. They can also chose to ay on men's teams.

No particular issue with that but I'm genuinely surprised that he cuts the mustard. I was a semi decent footballer but I was way out of my league when guesting in a male team. And frequently off the pitch for blood injuries Shock

Missthechips · 20/07/2020 16:14

Good

Evelefteden · 20/07/2020 16:15

I should think so too.

cremuel · 20/07/2020 16:24

I find it a bit frustrating all the wide-eyed amazement that after all this research there is finally some reason to suppose that male-bodied people have a physical advantage over female-bodied people. Great that they are finally acknowledging and acting on it, but ... of course this was the case. How could anyone have ever thought this wasn’t the case?!

BaronessWrongCrowd · 20/07/2020 16:26

Good

Banana0pancakes · 20/07/2020 16:36

Excellent news

SilverOtter · 20/07/2020 16:40

Finally, a bit of sanity!🙌

Kaiserin · 20/07/2020 17:09

About bloody time

Gingerkittykat · 20/07/2020 17:48

Lets hope that other sports see sense and do the same.

Well quite. It is a bit “no shit, Sherlock”.

Transwomen face being banned from playing rugby with women

I think we can phrase that in a more honest way:

Women to be allowed to play rugby against women

JaJaDingDong · 20/07/2020 18:02

I don't know if that's brave or foolish!

Thank goodness. Male puberty adds on so much strength and muscle compared to female and females need protecting. I wonder what would be the decision for a transwoman who had taken hormone blockers and never gone through puberty? I guess this will put more pressure on children to take life-changing drugs. Pandora's box I think!

Melroses · 20/07/2020 18:19

Ooo - covered on R4 6pm news in some depth.

Nasty people maintaining contact sport for women. Grin

Quite - its a really fascinating insight into the power of culture.
This pretence that maybe male bodied people didn't have an advantage because of how they identified, and how it needed to be researched, even though everyone could see with their eyes that they did and even though all of our lived experiences meant we all knew the greater physical strength and size that men have. It's absolutely fascinating from a sociological perspective. Also says something about the status of women though, that this pretence needed to be gone through.

wineandroses1 · 20/07/2020 18:28

It was outrageous in the first place to allow male-bodied rugby players to compete against females - what sort of idiot agreed to that?

Let's hope this becomes the rule in all other sports too, otherwise female sports will be destroyed. It must be terrible for an elite athlete to train for a sport that they have no chance of ever winning.
