I know there's loads going on at the moment, and Damian Barr is just one bearded misogynist in an increasingly dystopian world, but he's the one who kicked up a huge self-righteous fuss about Baroness Nicholson and got her ousted from her position at the Booker Prize on the grounds of homophobia and transphobia. Who would have imagined that such a zealous icon of ideological purity would turn out to have said things like this??

(Oh yes. Any one of the several million of us on FWR who has seen a bearded misogynist hiding behind a trans-rights banner...)

The Savoy have stood behind their bearded wonder and put this out on twitter

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/07/2020 18:51

He hasn’t apologised for calling women bitches and whores. I take it the Savoy is fine with that.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 18:54

I have a feeling this twitter feed will be stinky with the brain farts of the beardy man. Who owns the Savoy?

gardenbird48 · 03/07/2020 19:06

so he's sort of apologised for the use of the word tranny but not the hideous words he says about women, the hideous racist and misogynist words about Thai and Moldovan women or the mocking of someone who is suicidal - oh and taking the mick out of someone with mental health issues. The Savoy are standing by him with a rather pathetic statement that addresses none of the issues - it was a place we went for a special treat but never again. If I was on Twitter I would let them know - actually I feel a strongly worded direct email coming on.....

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/07/2020 19:17

That went well for them didn’t it. I guess they were damned if they did and cancelled if they didn’t.

fatblackcatspaw · 03/07/2020 19:28

oh dear owned by Canadians! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savoy_Hotel

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 19:30

Canadians? Oh well that explains a lot. However... I’d guess the savoys guests are more likely to be from ME than Canada. And afternoon tea isn’t exactly a rugby club activity is it?

classicspring · 03/07/2020 19:50

The Savoy isn't coming out too well from that tweet. The replies really show up the misogyny.

AbsintheFriends · 03/07/2020 19:56

The BBC have realised they really ought to cover it, so have chosen the most sympathetic headline available.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-53276425

The article itself isn't too awful. Thank goodness they didn't give the gig to Ben Hunte.

He hasn't really 'apologised' though has he? Just posted some 'regret statements' on his locked down Twitter feed, which, since he hasn't unlocked it for 3 days, nobody necessarily will have seen?

(Unless, of course, you work in social media marketing and have the login details for 23 different client accounts, many of which followed him before this started.... )

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 20:09

He does little literary dos at the Savoy, no? I’m local 😈

Divoc2020 · 03/07/2020 20:50

The next time he does a live one we should all go (with the Baroness, of course!) and flash mob!

fatblackcatspaw · 03/07/2020 21:25

ooh this bloody bloody virus I'd be there in a flash

RubyViolet · 03/07/2020 21:56

Easy to get in, you can walk into The American Bar.
If you said you were having afternoon tea l am sure you would just walk in.
As for the Literary Salon, just book a seat. Think it will be really oversubscribed when it comes back 😂😂😂

nauticant · 03/07/2020 22:12

A scattering of women in the audience. One by one they stand up and announce they're going to read out a tweet written by Damian Barr and then read out some of his highlights. Each time they end with "even with this, The Savoy maintains its support of Damian Barr".

Bananabixfloof · 03/07/2020 22:15

Now this I would do. I live nowhere near the Savoy, but this I'm up for.
gardenbird48 · 03/07/2020 22:17

if one of my kids says sorry in such a 'not sorry' way - I ask them to have a think and at least try and sound like they mean it. His effort was pathetic.

ValancyRedfern · 03/07/2020 22:21

Sign me up for Savoy flash mob!

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 22:31

Shall we all sit in the front row, knitting like Madame Guillotine?

teawamutu · 03/07/2020 22:32

How about embroidering a Leeds Spinners banner?

PumbaasCucumbas · 03/07/2020 22:39

Wearing I stand with Moldovan whores T-shirt’s

SerenityNowwwww · 03/07/2020 22:48

Oh yes T-shirt’s with he’s best hits on them?

DidoLamenting · 03/07/2020 23:27

The Savoy is owned by a Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talalto be managed by Al-Waleed's affiliate,Fairmont Hotels and Resortsof Canada. It isn't owned by Canadians.

And as for this piece of drivel- Donald Trump's behaviour is because feminists didn't campaign against him?

Barr really is truly loathsome

Damian Barr
RubyViolet · 03/07/2020 23:36

Dido that tweet has really pushed me over the edge now. His friends, the ones writing columns for the Nationals. They need to Stop covering their arses.
The ones who have written about Feminism. Let’s be having you !

BigBadVoodooHat · 03/07/2020 23:50

His ‘apology’ is on a par with LRM’s ‘apology’, isn’t it? Neither were exacting dripping with contrition.

Mind, it takes a stunning degree of arrogance to redirect the accusations of transphobia at the people who unearthed the tweets, rather than acknowledging that making those comments in the first place was transphobic Hmm
