TRA, family views and a drag queen video

This morning my brother sent me a video of a drag queen explaining about how JK Rowling was wrong. He said he really wanted me to watch it as it was very important and very eloquently put apparently. I lasted about 4 minutes then had to switch it off. For reference my brother is early 40s, gay and lives in the States. I’ve tried not getting into anything about the TR movement as we don’t agree. I think because he felt it was tough growing up gay that he has sympathy with this particular group. He knows some trans people and apparently they’re lovely.

I have two daughters both with Sen. Men being in women’s spaces is a huge worry for me. And what it means for women everywhere. I feel like we’re going backwards on women’s rights.

Aside from not getting into this with him, are there any links that I could use that would give him a better understanding? Though this maybe a waste of time as I’m not sure he wants to hear it.

Has he actually read what she wrote? I think I'd ask that.

I think the situation in the US is very, very different from here in the UK. That's maybe something to note?

Does he believe that TMAM? Can he imagine having a relationship with a trans man?

I think a lot of Americans are upset about JKR’s line where she said something like “I would march for your rights”. They don’t realise that JKR lives somewhere that is not the USA, where stuff is different to the USA, and in this case, better, because both sexes,? and also trans people already have rights under the law.

That’s the one thing I did think about asking, is whether he’d have a relationship with a transman. He’s very very sensitive. I’m not sure he’s even read it. He’s buying into the narrative the movement are screaming about that it’s transphobic.

Sue takes offence to JK’s concern about rushing into transition/peer pressure.

The riposte to that is last night’s Newsnight, available on YouTube for those outside the UK. Newsnight mentions homophobia and if your brother is British born, he may remember the BBC and this may have impact above Sue’s source,?WPATH, an organisation where all members, to qualify for full membership, must be professional that make money from transition.
Sue also makes claims about puberty blockers being completely reversible, a claim the NHS has withdrawn.

Who is the drag queen who posted a video about why drag wasn’t for kids. Kitty something? Maybe he has an opinion on this.

I would leave it at that but say you have more.
For instance, Sue’s second objection is to JK’s claim that removing barriers to single sex spaces endangers women and girls and GRCs require no surgery or hormones (Channel 4 fact check supports JK here).

Sue says a man has never dressed as a woman to go to a women’s changing room to assault women. He emphasises the Never. Katie D is one example that had happened. Plenty of them though.

Sue, a very nicely dressed, confident and well spoken white person, than spends ages comparing trans people to discrimination against Jews and black people.

Sue concludes with an assertion based on nothing that the “Desire of trans people for Justice” has meant “Cis/het people are scared”.
I would imagine Sue has never had any reason to think why children are protected from adults and females from males.

In the video and medium piece Sue doesn’t say they are a drag queen. They say they are on the waiting list at the gender clinic, have very very nice hair and are wearing more make up than I own.

The medium article is posted under the name Christopher Nelson, but there is no photo with or without the lovely hair.

I think it’s quite hypocritical that you are asking for links to send to him to explain your point of view when you wouldn’t even have watch the full video that explains his point of view.

I mean you can get aggressive if you want but it doesn’t really get anyone anywhere does it? Also doesn’t at all address the point that I made but whatever.
The main point he made was that the most common group that commits violence against women is cis men. So why is all the hate focused at trans women when they are statistically far less likely to commit violence against women?

@CallieCat19 I gave up on the video and read the transcript. And I know my brother’s point of view. As for aggressive, no offence but I think you’re seeing things that aren’t there.

The aggressive comment wasn’t aimed at you OP, it was to the snarky comment from another poster.
I just don’t understand why people are so threatened by trans people. There is a real issue I’m our society of violence towards women but it isn’t being caused by trans women.

No I don’t believe that no trans women have committed crimes against women. I think that when you consider all of the crimes committed against women, only a very small percentage are committed by trans women.

CallieCat19- even once is enough there are victims suffering from those crimes. Not all men will commit a crime against women but we still have single sex spaces to try to reduce it whenever possible. A third safe space for trans people is a fair compromise.

The first isn’t the worst in that at least Hauxwell’s victims were adults but I’m starting with it because it was one of my peak trans moments. It was the first report I ever read – back in March 2017 – in which a newspaper refers to a rapist throughout as “she”, even though it also says that Craig Hauxwell aka Lisa Hauxwell, “could be living as a man or a woman”.

“A convicted sex offender who has been on the run for several months and has been living as a man and a woman featured during a national Crimewatch appeal. Lisa Hauxwell, 48, was sentenced in her absence to 14 years in prison last year for two rapes and seven indecent assaults that took place between 2001 and 2002 in the Newton Aycliffe area.”

When Hauxwell was caught he was found to have been living as a man after all. I presume but don’t actually know that he is serving his sentence in a men’s prison. Hauxwell may not genuinely identify as trans but this case surely highlights the dangers of people being allowed to legally self-identify.

“Marie Dean, 50, is being held at HMP Preston, Lancashire, where she is protesting over what she claims is a “nightmare” refusal of the Ministry of Justice to recognise she is a woman.”

Dean was jailed indefinitely in 2009, according to this report in the Lancashire Herald.

“Gary Dean Marie, 42, committed more than 30 offences, including voyeurism, aggravated burglary and assaulting police officers, a court heard yesterday. Marie, of Lubbock Street, Burnley, was a sexual offender who broke into several homes and filmed himself wearing underwear belonging to teenage girls in Burnley and Padiham, Preston Crown Court was told.”

HI Callie, I don’t know if you meant me, apologies if I was aggressive.
Like the Op I am the parent of a SN child, and I found the last part of the video tough to watch. There was a long section belittling the concerns that parents have.
I am worried about my ability to keep my child safe. I don’t know if someone who is not a parent of a SN child can understand this.
I don’t think those concerns are trivial, and my trans friends do understand those concerns aren’t about them.
