MRA Reddit subreddits r/TheRedPill and r/MGTOW have now been identified as "shocking and offensive" and quarantined and scheduled for deletion!

We should complain to Reddit about r/MensRights and get that one quarantined too.

They may well get their arse handed back - because on this site we are still able to argue and debate opposing views. But if people who share those views of WPUK also have the ear of our public institutions - what happens then? You seem very confident that sense and legitimacy will prevail.

Who decides? Probably society in the end.

This same argument could have been used to suppress support for the Jews in Nazi Germany or opposition to the gulags in Soviet Russia. 'Society' often gets things horrible wrong, which is why it's so important that individuals have the right to dissent.

It's depressing that we seem to have to relearn this every couple of generations.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 03/02/2020 16:22

It’s rarely women who get to decide, that’s for sure!

Packingsoapandwater · 03/02/2020 17:04

I've found r/TheRedPill and r/MGTOW to be enormously informative over the years in terms of revealing the nature of the psychological space of some hardcore anti-feminists/anti-women agitators.

In some cases, I've been able to read between the lines and actually felt very sorry for some of the posters. You can see how some posters have been a victim of their upbringings, their environments, of received ideas, of their own vulnerabilities ... and how it's completely screwed up their lives.

So I would never advocate suppressing those forums. I also don't think it is a good idea to drive these kinds of communities underground.

But having said that, I don't think society can survive these constant sectarian and factional "culture wars", whether they take place in material reality or digital space. It's already getting too much, and something will have to shift eventually.

What that will be, I don't know.

Whereas my view is that it should be possible to argue that GC discussion is sufficiently different to nazis and paedophiles to be able to allow one and not the other

Unfortunately you can be sure that TRAs are campaigning for the GC subreddit to be quarantined and I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened at some point. They view it as hate speech after all...

Let’s hope that the people who voted for the Face-Eating Leopard Party aren’t too surprised when the leopards eat their faces.

eh. It was them or the Poisonous Jellyfish party, women had to weigh up their chances and at least the leopards were upfront with the whole face-eating agenda. None of this "Be nice! The jellyfish just want a hug!" business.

The current line is incitement to commit crime.
I think that’s fine, personally.

If it's applied consistently and reasonably, then incitement to commit (violent or sexual) crime seems like a good line. The Red Pill types were certainly persuading each other to rape women. They have a three letter abbreviation for "last minute resistance" (to penetration, from a woman) and encouraged each other to "overcome" it. That has been the case for years and it's horrific to even think about how many socially clueless men have been incited into rape by that concept.

But they have been doing that for years now without intervention from Reddit admins, so it doesn't seem like "incitement to crime" is Reddit's line. Has something recent happened for them be quarantined?

I’d be very surprised. I don’t think Reddit gives much of a shit about social justice warriors and does give a shit about free speech.

It doesn’t even appear on the wikipedia list of controversial reddit communities en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversial_Reddit_communities

noblegiraffe · 03/02/2020 21:16

They were quarantined with a whole bunch of other questionable content. It’s still accessible, you just can’t click on it by accident any more (and you need an account).

“The quarantine is the latest attempt by Reddit to stifle the spread of hate speech and misinformation on its platform”

“Russell Ryland, a moderator at R/WatchPeopleDie, called the quarantine a “slow death sentence” for his subreddit, which hosts shock videos of people dying in various ways. The verified email requirement alone, Ryland told The Daily Beast, would be a “huge hit” to the subreddit’s readership, which currently sits at more than 400,00 subscribers”

used to lurk it a bit, helped me enormously with avoiding asshats and PUA last time I was single.

Me too, especially as I did once accidentally date a PUA briefly.
