Spinster, where women are allowed to freely discuss things that affect them

From a helpful Spinster @Maat
spinster.xyz/home

I'll post more tips as they become available for anyone who wants to dip a toe in the water.

"I'm sure your members will be fine creating a profile as presumably they did so on Mumsnet. You then go to your home page and click on the 'Spinster' tab at the top. That takes you to the feed for all of us. You can click to follow people (I suspect Mumsnet has this facility too so, again, assume members will find this easy enough). The icons under each post allow you to 'reply', 'share post' and 'like post' in that order. I'm not sure about Mumsnet but, unlike with Twitter, sharing a post doesn't give you the opportunity to share it with a comment of your own.

Once you're following people the tabs at the top of your home page make more sense. 'Home' is for people you're following, 'Spinster' is for everyone on our part of the Fediverse and 'Fediverse' itself is an open forum where you get all sorts of people and different groups, not all of them women-friendly.

Good luck. I'm sure the members will be fine. I can't imagine Spinster being more complicated than Mumsnet."

We also don't get banned for knowing biological facts Wink

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 12:14

I'm over here from Spinster. I hope more of you join us there. But I will say that I hope you all continue to stay on MN too and keep on posting here. MN has a huge reach - way beyond Spinster at the moment - and feminists here can have a much greater impact than on other platforms.

Spartabix · 22/01/2020 12:21

I also find it easier to find information on Mumsnet. I do wish they would change the rules so that only registered posters could report posts. Allowing anyone in the world (no matter how malicious) to report means there is unecessary pressure from people who have no intention of using the board, but simply want to attack women.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 22/01/2020 12:26

I've joined Spinster. One thing that I'm a bit unsure about is how many of the monitors are also on there. So I'm a bit circumspect.

Won't be leaving here, though. Too much useful stuff, too many good people.

EverardDigby · 22/01/2020 12:28

Yeah I've just joined too, not had time to get a hang of it yet but will do.

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 13:01

Scrimshaw - Spinster is definitely being watched by the TRAs, so don't post anything you wouldn't feel comfortable seeing posted elsewhere as a screenshot. But you can pretty much say what you like on there.

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 13:03

It's basically a simpler version of Twitter.

NotTerfNorCis · 22/01/2020 15:13

Spinster is good. But I wish there was a Spinster with the format of Mumsnet.

stumbledin · 22/01/2020 15:20

I did join Spinster some time ago but gave up as so many posters just posted tweets from twitter and it got really boring.

Hope it is take on an identity of its own and just ignore twitter.

To have (another) platform where women can freely exchange it good.

Just a small tip from what I found is that because I normally only have time for social media etc., late in the day I was mainly seeing posts from early risers in Australia and US based posters. ie often missed more UK based posts but made the effort to find and then follow them.

And Meghan Murphy of course!

NewYearsHumberElla · 22/01/2020 15:20

I’m on there, different name, its starting to make sense now I’m following a few people. There has been quite a lot of activity today!

MrsFogi · 22/01/2020 15:25

I tried to join when it was first set up but gave up with the initial glitches with the sign-up process. I may take another look because the Feminist Boards here are not what they used to be (since the new guidelines/poster bans etc) - we have lost some really knowledgeable posters over the years (although I suspect some of them also got fed up of having to waste their time on trolls/people who couldn't be bothered to read old threads).

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 22/01/2020 15:37

I'm on there and still working it all out!

It was Lang who convinced me to join in November. You never know with MN when it might be your last post, especially when they invent new rules for certain stellar posters.

janeskettle · 22/01/2020 21:01

It is refreshing that Spinster doesn't force you to ignore the evidence in front of your own eyes.

Imagine in 2020 it's revolutionary that women be allowed to call abusive men, abusive men!

IsadoraQuagmire · 22/01/2020 21:03

I'm on there, also on Glindr.

NewYearsHumberElla · 22/01/2020 21:07

I know! It’s tempting to just run amok stating facts and throwing plain speaking around like a GC Catherine wheel.

stumbledin · 23/01/2020 00:49

Had forgotten about Glindr. What sort of people are on there? I mean is it a bit feminist! Smile

GirlDownUnder · 23/01/2020 07:18

Spinster is good. But I wish there was a Spinster with the format of Mumsnet.

I would love this.

I'm on there, also on Glindr

I’ve seen Glindr mentioned a few times now. What is it?

Mayomaynot · 23/01/2020 09:38

Glindr is similar to Spinster and is run by Graham Linehan. The main difference is that there are more men on there than are on Spinster. But it's still gender critical.

For what it's worth, I just saw this on FB. I don't know the history or veracity, I am just sharing:

vmdeus.home.blog/2020/01/09/spinster-considers-cooperating-with-the-fbi-handing-over-user-data-and-fails-to-warn-feminists-of-possible-pending-investigation/

NotTerfNorCis · 23/01/2020 09:52

Yeah I heard something about that. Apparently the admin received an email purporting to be from the FBI. Sounds like a TRA wind-up to me. There's nothing illegal on Spinster and certainly nothing that would concern the FBI.

Mayomaynot · 23/01/2020 09:52

Spinster has enemies who are doing their best to turn women away from it and shut it down. I wonder why? Hmm. Anyway...

Statement by M.K. Fain (owner of Spinster) on this issue:

"Addressing rumors:

  • Yes, Spinster received emails that may have been from the FBI. The first lawyer that we spoke to advised us that this was likely a scam and not to reply. A second lawyer we spoke to from the EFF said it did not appear to be a scam. We have not received further communication from them.

In response, Spinster:

  1. Set up a warrant canary in case we receive a gag order preventing us from disclosing information ( spinster.xyz/canary )
  1. Set up a process for deciding which information we will and won’t disclose to law enforcement (ex. we would comply with a subpoena to aid law enforcement in a case involving sex trafficking and child porn, we would fight a subpoena which seemed to be aimed at political speech).
  1. Updated our privacy policy to be clear that some information may be disclosed to law enforcement (again, only if we do not choose to fight the subpoena).
  1. Set up a legal entity to which Spinster can be served without serving us directly at home

To be clear:

  • We have NOT received any requests for user data from any law enforcement. We have NOT been contacted beyond requests to provide a way to serve Spinster. We have NOT given the FBI any information about users.
  • The EFF has told us that they would be interested in helping out pro bono should we face a subpoena for political speech. We plan to make full use of their offer if necessary. So far, it has not been necessary.
  • Any requests for user information from law enforcement we receive will be made public, and the user notified (unless there is a gag order, in which case, see the canary).

Thank you to our good friends at Cliterati for, once again, causing drama over something which they know nothing about.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • MK"

Glindr is similar to Spinster and is run by Graham Linehan

Thanks for this info Mayomaynot and I kept reading the name as Glinner so that makes sense now Grin

ScrimshawTheSecond · 23/01/2020 12:32

Mayo, thanks. I'm still a bit baffled by Spinster, but we'll see.

SisyphusLangClegRocks · 23/01/2020 12:35

MK's put up a handy guide to help newbies navigate the site Smile

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 23/01/2020 14:50

I may be misremembering, but I think Oflang did join and got chased off in the early days, there have been attempts at infiltration by The Monitors but they are woeful at disguising themselves...a bigger problem seems to be idealogical differences between some users and the site founders I am ignorant on the subtleties of the issue but for gods sake don't mention political lesbianism notwithstanding I would like to think that the benefits of freedom of speech outweigh that.

I confess to being an unreliable source though as, having joined on the first day I tend to dip in and out, preferring to lurk here until recently.
