Boy George slammed as ‘transphobic’ after mocking pronouns as a ‘modern form of attention seeking’

Am loving BG’s twitter feed over the last few hours. He has more than doubled down on the issue.

Yes he has done some bad things and I don’t like that, but I am glad he has done this. He clearly has no fucks to give.

LangCleg · 10/01/2020 10:21

My mum loved Boy George. I’ve never told her what he did!

I told mine. Many times! She just thought he needed saving, bless her. It was completely out of character for her second wave self. Always makes me laugh when I think back on it. I swear to goddess, if tumblr had been around at the time she'd have had a saggy-titted one, dedicated to him.

Oh, I do miss my mum.

zanahoria · 10/01/2020 10:27

his latest take

" I should have said 'Leave your pronouns at the door because you won't need them in my house. I will worship you in all your difference"

Attention seek in the media as much as you like.

Twitter is the new media. He’s just tweeted “Attention is my middle name!”

In the eighties, people like BG, Bowie and many others broadened the idea of what it is to be male.

Read his autobiog. For a while he lived as a woman and wanted a sex change. He then realised that wouldn’t be right for him. Also tweeted the other day:

‘I used the ladies toilet throughout the 80s!’

acatcalledjohn · 10/01/2020 10:43

^It's all arse about tit. (local vernacular for wrong way round)
In the eighties, people like BG, Bowie and many others broadened the idea of what it is to be male. Ditto Alison Moyet refusing to conform to what the pop industry wanted from a "girl"^

But now ridiculous stereotypes are being reinforced. You can't be a feminine man, you must be a woman (and a real woman to boot). Everyone must be put in little labelled pigeonholes as regards their presentation and sexuality. Being Gender Fluid and Pansexual is a label just like the others even though it's masquerading as being woke and progressive

^ This, in spades.

A friend recently talked about some people who have the dominant / non dominant type relationship. (I want to say it was the pup/owner type role play - certainly on of the odd sexual fetishes turned lifestyle.) At which point I stated that sort of stuff should stay in the bedroom, it's not something to publicly identify as. In the same way that I wouldn't ever expect a male gay couple to identify as anal sex practicing or not, or whether the woman in a straight relationship likes to be tied up.

It's all woke self-important attention seeking.

fiestar · 10/01/2020 10:43

Holy shit, I just looked through the replies to the pronoun's-door tweet and there's a lot about grammar, a bit about "but your name is BOY hahah", a bit about "that's transphobic!" and some "come on, it's nothing but courtesy to remember someone's pronouns" but NOTHING about "death to TERFS" or those horrible violent gifs where someone gets smacked around when they're telling someone to shut up.

It's almost as if, and stick with me here, the TRAs are happy for him to speak even though they disagree with him.

What's the difference between him and JKR? I think she even said she'd abide by pronouns, didn't she? Why aren't they getting violent with him? Why aren't they trying to silence him?

acatcalledjohn · 10/01/2020 10:49

Why aren't they trying to silence him?

A) He's a man
B) Attacking a gender non-conformist would confuse their pigeonholed little brains
C) Attacking a straight white female is easy

HandsOffMyRights · 10/01/2020 11:05

In the eighties, people like BG, Bowie and many others broadened the idea of what it is to be male.

Absolutely! Men like Martin Gore, Marc Almond, Robert Smith, Andy Bell all dressing how they wanted.

Women like Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, Grace Jones, Patti Smith, Alison Moyet.

It's so regressive now and bless 'em, the "Ok Boomer" crowd think they're so progressive.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 11:08

From what I see, they are trying to silence him.

Disappointed re toilets.

nauticant · 10/01/2020 11:20

A mixed history that's for sure but you can't help liking stuff like this:

Originally they were named Sex Gang Children[17], but realising they had a cross-dressing Irish singer (George), a black-Briton (Craig), a Jewish drummer (Moss) and an ethnic Englishman (Hay), they settled on the name Culture Club, referring to the various ethnic backgrounds of the members.

ClaireP20 · 10/01/2020 11:22

I agree with him. Call yourself what you like but 'them' as a noun...good heavens..

notmoresheep · 10/01/2020 11:25

I reckon he’s talking about toilets of a certain 80s nightclub scene where he’ll have done his makeup in the mirrors (not so available in the gents).

I remember 1986 a crowd of local girls and boys in the ladies loos in the pub, a mini party putting on eyeliner and sharing lipstick. when the landlady came in to tell us off the boys bailed out of the window Grin. They weren’t in there to assert their rights or identity, just to use the big mirrors.

LangCleg · 10/01/2020 11:39

I reckon he’s talking about toilets of a certain 80s nightclub scene

Indeed.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/01/2020 11:43

The hero worship of a man convicted of a violent crime is disgusting.

notmoresheep · 10/01/2020 12:07

convicted and served his sentence. or are all ex-cons to be rejected and binned forevermore? he’s human and fucks up. we all do, although our transgressions don’t sell newspapers.

I wasn’t really a fan of the music but the massive positive impact he had on everyone at the time, especially my young gay friends, shouldn’t be dismissed and still resonates compared to the dull outrage and virtue signalling of the woke generation.

Tips the scales by a lot for me.

nauticant · 10/01/2020 12:08

His crime is heresy notmoresheep. That can never be forgiven.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 12:19

“ or are all ex-cons to be rejected and binned forevermore? ”

Violent crime against a human being? I never thought I’d use this expression but yes, that person can get in the bin!

PracticallyFamous · 10/01/2020 12:54

but NOTHING about "death to TERFS" or those horrible violent gifs where someone gets smacked around when they're telling someone to shut up.

I got told to "die mad about it" after my reply in support of him. But then I identify as a woman on Twitter.

feelingverylazytoday · 10/01/2020 13:41
  1. Walk on the wild side is transphobic.
  2. Refusing to accept being called a 'ciswoman' is transphobic.
Goosefoot · 10/01/2020 13:56

I think it's probably fair to say that many of the gender benders were looking for some attention, and to upset their elders, show they were different. It wasn't all some kind of principled protest. And for pop stars a lot of them were also looking to promote themselves.

At least that's how I remember things. Many teens and young adults who were quite happy to have a righteous cause to make their parents feel uncomfortable about.

AutumnRose1 · 10/01/2020 14:32

Goose sure, but that’s all personal

The problem at the moment is the fact that people want to massively alter the lives of others.

nauticant · 10/01/2020 14:36

I also don't recall the Church of the Poison Mind working as a cult with kids being pressured to alter their bodies to conform. Nor the no-platforming of groups wondering if gender-bending hadn't gone a bit too far.

Sexnotgender · 10/01/2020 14:38

Of course they were looking to promote themselves and further their careers, i have zero issue with that.

I’m the same way I have zero issue with an adult taking hormones or getting surgery or wearing a twinset and pearls if that’s what tickles their fancy.

My only issue is when they expect society to alter to accommodate their whims.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 10/01/2020 14:38

Oh, I do miss my mum

Poopy isnt it Flowers

notmoresheep · 10/01/2020 14:39

well a lot of people tied dangly coloured stringy stuff in their hair. someone will be along in a minute to argue that counts as altering bodies Grin
