Nick Ferrari covered the JK Rowling mess this morning on his breakfast show. He has often covered trans issues as one of the few broadcasters who can see this movement for what it is.

Sharron Davies was on and was superb putting her case with clarity and in straightforward language as usual. He agreed with every word she said.
Then came the editor of Diva magazine Carrie Lyell who was embarrassingly bad and folded under any questioning from Ferrari. She claimed that transpeople are being murdered every day. And agreed that Maya should be silenced.

Sunlight is a great thing and people are listening. Thank you JK Rowling.

"a sex positive" - says everything

GCAcademic · 20/12/2019 10:00

Altogether, there are around 430,000 homicides worldwide each year. And yet millions of trans people are being murdered each year. Hmm TRA logic for you . . .

koshkat · 20/12/2019 10:01

I’ll be the same Strongmummy that is a sex positive , intersectional feminist that loves upsetting TERFS.

A supporter of men's right to buy/rent women's bodies? That kind of sex positive? How shameful.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/12/2019 10:01

And you leave us with a slur, how unexpected.

HorseWithNoBlueHairs · 20/12/2019 10:03

* I* bid you good day..

Not staying to flesh out the main planks of your argument?

What a shame.

GCAcademic · 20/12/2019 10:03

You can always tell when the TRAs are getting rattled by the number of them that turn up here to dazzle us to their excellent arguments.

BovaryX · 20/12/2019 10:06

Oh I’m feminist, I just don’t agree with you lot and find this section ridiculous as a result

I find it ridiculous that an existential threat to freedom of speech has been allowed to fester and a woman is sacked for asserting a belief in biological sex. An empirical belief shared by the majority of humans on the planet. I find it regressive and ridiculous that primary school children are being taught girls like certain books and other gender conformist nonsense. I find it ridiculous that a guy gets visited by the cops for a limerick but burglaries are not investigated. I find it unacceptable that a lobby whose tactics involve avoiding public debate and media scrutiny have been able to swerve both for so long. For those of us concerned about freedom and democracy? Great to see that’s over.

thatdamnwoman · 20/12/2019 10:10

So what feminist beliefs do you hold, Strongmummy, and what feminist causes do you support, that you would like to see here? In which case start a thread about them.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 10:11

We need to tread very cautiously indeed before getting on any Ferrari bandwagon. The man's a bigot and has zero interest in or support for feminism.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 10:12

Altogether, there are around 430,000 homicides worldwide each year. And yet millions of trans people are being murdered each year

To be fair, Carrie Lyell didn't claim that.

BovaryX · 20/12/2019 10:15

The man's a bigot

Says who? Ferrari makes some good points on a range of issues. Is there a central committee that determines who is and isn’t a purveyor of good think? Who elected them? Time for some diversity of opinion

koshkat · 20/12/2019 10:20

To be fair, Carrie Lyell didn't claim that.

Can you please tell me exactly what she said Eq? I need to listen again but if you can clarify that would be very helpful. Thanks.

koshkat · 20/12/2019 10:23

Sick of people writing off other people as 'bigots' - it is a meaningless word.
He is not a feminist no - he is perfectly entitled not to be. Stop shutting down debate please.

You do realise this is exactly why we have a Tory government, don't you?

Nobody's getting on a Ferrari bandwagon, FFS. This forum does not endorse cancel culture (largely because it gets you a Tory government). You don't have to be a feminist to support free speech. Democracy has a plurality of views and you don't get yours across if you deplatform yourself from editorial journalism you don't agree with. There is no guilt-by-association conferred by listening to a sodding radio show.

So fucking tired of repeating this ad nauseam.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 10:28

You only have to listen to Ferrari on other issues to realise how bigoted he is - essentially he's Daily Mail Lite. Wait till he's talking about topics like education, legal aid, immigration, sentencing or capital punishment - and particularly divorce, maintenance, maternity leave, coercive conduct etc. You can see some of it in the way he interviews people; if he agrees with them he gives them free reign, but if he doesn't, he won't let them finish what they are saying when they're making entirely valid points, or chunters over them, or frames really hostile questions.

@Koshkat, I was driving and didn't take notes of exactly what was said during the interview, but I do know what wasn't said.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 10:30

Stop shutting down debate please.

How does raising a valid concern about Ferrari amount to shutting down debate? On the other hand, how does saying that to someone who raises a point you happen to disagree with amount to anything other than shutting down debate?

DuMondeB · 20/12/2019 10:34

You’d think a Mumsnet poster would understand the difference between big gamete havers and small gamete havers, and why those differences affects big gamete havers negatively.

Especially a feminist Mumsnet poster.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 10:34

LangCleg: self-evidently I'm not saying people shouldn't listen to a radio show, not least because I heard the section in question myself. I tend to channel-surf when I'm driving in the mornings, which is why I pick up bits of the Ferrari programme. What I am saying is that it is dangerous to line up with Ferrari, because the reality is that his stance on trans issues has nothing to do with any concern for women and women's rights.

RealityNotEssentialism · 20/12/2019 10:36

Just laughing at Strongmummy while having my breakfast. You know you don’t have to do everything the boys tell you don’t you? Women are actually able to speak for themselves. Very revolutionary.

BovaryX · 20/12/2019 10:39

You only have to listen to Ferrari on other issues to realise how bigoted he is

Equanimitas
Nope. You are not an authority on who is and isn’t a bigot. I ask again. Is there a central committee who decides who is a purveyor of good think? Who elected them? It is way past time for some diversity of opinion A variety of media sources and voices are required to prevent the bigotry of Owen Jones and The Guardian dominating the debate. That gig is over

FloralBunting · 20/12/2019 10:40

Yes, lots of people who aren't feminists agree that men can never be women and women shouldn't be penalized for saying so.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

OneEpisode · 20/12/2019 10:41

Nick Ferrari on LBC reaches 2 million voters. The segment on Maya was at I think 8:35. so 1 hours maybe 38 minutes on the catch-up. Trailed before the news so at 1 hour 33 in the catch up.

BovaryX · 20/12/2019 10:45

Democracy has a plurality of views and you don't get yours across if you deplatform yourself from editorial journalism you don't agree with. There is no guilt-by-association conferred by listening to a sodding radio show. So fucking tired of repeating this ad nauseam

Well said Lang!

LangCleg · 20/12/2019 10:46

What I am saying is that it is dangerous to line up with Ferrari

Oh for heavens sake. Did you even read what I said?

Nobody's getting on a Ferrari bandwagon, FFS. This forum does not endorse cancel culture (largely because it gets you a Tory government).

Like I say - this constant Manichean bullshit is why we have a Tory government. Purity politics and cancel culture has destroyed the left in this country and it's still not listening.

If Nick Ferrari has a segment women on FWR agree with, they will post accordingly. If he has a segment they disagree with, they will post accordingly.

It's not rocket science. Drop the politics of goody vs baddy. It's childish and superficial and I'm so fucking tired of it ruining every sodding thing.
