Oh, is Fry on the view that trans woman are women? That’s disappointing.

IsabelleSE19 · 20/12/2019 09:50

Sorry for derail but posh boys died in droves in WWI as they were usually officers and identifiable by their uniform/equipment so targeted by enemy snipers. Sorry again - as you were.

I don't know if this has come up before on here but why is Brian Cox so silent? His wife has been vocally GC on Twitter for ages now. Cox speaking out would be a huge win, try telling him he's "anti-science"!

GCAcademic · 20/12/2019 10:08

Brian Cox doesn't want to have to give up the telly gigs or to find himself subject to the kind of bullying and harassment in his workplace from the student and wokeademic mob that Kathleen Stock and Rosa Freedman have to put up with. Of course, he wouldn't get it as bad, as he's a man, but even so . . .

DuMondeB
It's striking that men such as Fox and Douglas Murray are so intellectually lazy when it comes to women's issues, when they are so rigorous on everything else, Murray in particular. It comes down to a lack of empathy for women and reveals an emotional reflex against criticism of men as a sex class that they can't get over. That said, I agree with them on the majority of their opinions and it's important to come together on those issues. I don't think their motives are entirely to be trusted, however. I imagine Fox longs to return to a Lads Mag 90's era where discourse was a lot more frank, blokes were allowed to be blokey and boozy and be up for banter etc. In some ways that would be preferable to the wolves in sheep's clothing wokebros we get now, you know where you stand with blokes like that, but not great for women if it means regression in terms of women not being allowed to object to sexist behaviour.

StrangeLookingParasite · 20/12/2019 11:07

(posh boys like old Harrovian Laurence Fox didn’t die in trenches, that was for the likes of my great grandad)

No, everyone, from every strata died. It was quite egalitarian like that.

ArranUpsideDown · 20/12/2019 11:13

I see Mark Hamill has retracted his 'like' as the urge to be liked and kind runs strong:

It's a huge concern and he's still a Manchester Uni academic. The fallout for his department and researchers who depend upon him for grants/research funding and for reputation etc. would be substantial.

TheChampagneGalop · 20/12/2019 11:18

What a coward.

TheChampagneGalop · 20/12/2019 11:23

Hamill that is. So he is fine with women being fired for stating that sex is real then?

Butchyrestingface · 20/12/2019 12:27

I can just imagine what some of his Cambridge Footlights pals Emma Thompson, looking at you think about the subject.

Yes. Then there's all the paedophile supporting stuff - trying to push Tatchell's dodgy anti-safeguarding agenda on schools.

Childrenofthestones · 20/12/2019 12:39

Douglas Murray only recently said people like him who are relatively untouchable have a responsibility to stand up and be counted on subjects like this so hopefully he will back JKR soon

Aaarrgghhh · 20/12/2019 12:47

It seems I’m going to have to look into his views more. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan or follow him but I’ve enjoyed watching him on Qi and the like.

HandsOffMyRights · 20/12/2019 13:03

Yeh, he's ruined Blackadder now!

VMisaMarshmallow · 20/12/2019 23:28

Stephen Fry has always been a blatant misogynist, he’s never even hidden it just dressed if up as camp humour.

Childrenofthestones · 21/12/2019 09:19

"No, everyone, from every strata died. It was quite egalitarian like that."

The main difference between them was while most officers had the vote most Tommy's didn't.
But yes, death was a great leveler.

Childrenofthestones · 21/12/2019 09:21

Fry has changed his tune then.
I remember reading him saying "Whenever I hear somebody say 'Im offended by that' my response is 'So fucking what?'

HandsOffMyRights · 21/12/2019 09:24

Bet Fry is torn today, being the voice of the Harry Potter audio books.🤣🤣🤣

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/12/2019 09:28

Laurence goes a bit "what about the menz" in the triggernometry film though.

missyB1 · 21/12/2019 18:23

I had no idea Fox had been married to Billie Piper!! I must live under a rock.
I went off Laurence Fox a bit when he made a complaint about a PCSO who ticked him off for leaving his 5 year old son in the car whilst he was in a shop. To me it wasn't about the rights and wrongs of the situation (although it's not something I would have done). But it was more that when you've been caught out doing something potentially dodgy or dangerous just take it on the chin, say "sorry officer" and don't tantrum about it. He ran straight to the press and social media.

theflushedzebra · 21/12/2019 18:40

He went all father's rightsy during a custody battle with Billie Piper too - I'm not sure of the details - but he is a man who is used to getting his way, I'd say.

I switched off his triggernometry interview when he went all whataboutthemenz - it just bores me stupid, I've read those arguments 1000 times over on FWR

He is a very entitled male IMO. But it seems even some men's rightsy men can get this - which is nice to see.

theflushedzebra · 21/12/2019 18:48

Stephen Fry will be an interesting one to watch - he generally comes down on one side or other of an argument - and argues his side. He's v "public school debating society".

Strange to see him buddying up with Peter Tatchell - because Fry was happy to use the paedophile priests argument to great effect on the I2 debate "Catholicism is a force for good" - he argued against the motion.

He shared a platform with Jordan Peterson on the topic of freedom of speech - ie supporting it - so will he come out for freedom of speech and expression, on behalf of a woman ? We will see Wink

Goosefoot · 21/12/2019 18:54

If I were making guesses, I'd say that Fry, in thinking about trans issues, has mainly been thinking about small numbers of old-school transexuals.
