Call me Lisa - nurse with beard upsets patients

I saw this on Reddit and it really upset me. How can someone who is supposed to care for others lack so much compassion?

The nurse who wrote the message is in the US but it really starkly illustrates the collateral damage caused by self-ID

Because reddit is obviously such a reliable source of info and any story shared on there must be the truth Hmm

Clymene · 14/12/2019 19:20

Well anything written on here might not be true either @spurlingpipe.

What exactly do you find unconvincing about this scenario?

OP posts:
nauticant · 14/12/2019 19:31

It didn't happen.
OK, assuming it did happen what happened was misinterpreted.
OK, assuming it did happen and what happened was interpreted correctly, they were not really trans.
OK, assuming it did happen and what happened was interpreted correctly, and they were trans, ...

isabellerossignol · 14/12/2019 19:37

Obviously I have no idea if whoever posted that is telling the truth, but it honestly doesn't sound far fetched to me. If men are insisting they are women in other jobs (and they undoubtedly are) why would they not do the same as nurses?

SarahTancredi · 14/12/2019 19:45

If it didnt happen then. It has happened already and will happen again.

Not right. Not fair. Abuse.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/12/2019 20:17

Not much point fretting about is this real or not: under Brighton NHS policy it has and will be happening exactly like this. It is going to come down to exactly this: male people insisting that distressed female patients prioritise validating their identity over their own needs and feelings, whether or not they know all about the highly complex business of identity politics.

'This isn't real' claims probably translate as 'this is wrong but I'm really uncomfortable facing it'. You're right. It is wrong.

2BthatUnnoticed · 14/12/2019 20:21

Do hospital policies mean this could happen? If so, things like this will happen.

TRAs would say it’s an acceptable price to pay. Most people would say it’s unacceptable.

The disagreement around “acceptable price” is at the core of the trans / feminist debate.

Clymene · 14/12/2019 20:23

That is the point isn't it? It doesn't matter if this particular story is real, it's completely feasible.

OP posts:
traceyracer · 14/12/2019 20:28

You got it from reddit? Yeah a totally credible source.

Bendybop · 14/12/2019 20:32

I came across a job ad at a womens shelter or refuge and it said something like born female in their person specification. Isn't there something like that for medical treatments?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 14/12/2019 20:36

Yup, SarahTancredi and I know if it was permitted across the board one particularly creepy male worker that I had the unfortunate luck to work with in the past, would have latched onto that opportunity in a heartbeat. I’m not just saying this for impact, I have absolutely no doubt he would do this.

Clymene · 14/12/2019 20:42

@traceyracer - are you saying that patients wouldn't be distressed by having an obviously male bodied person if they were expecting a female? Or that there are no transwomen with beards? Or none who are HCPs?

I'm a bit confused about what your objection is based on.

OP posts:
Babdoc · 14/12/2019 20:49

I’m a retired doctor and I would have regarded it as totally unprofessional (and abusive) for any medical or nursing staff to put their own selfish wish for validation before the needs of sick and frightened patients.
If this person can’t prioritise their patients, they have no business calling themselves a nurse. Disgraceful behaviour.

dimdarkashian · 14/12/2019 20:49

I smell bullshit

Clymene · 14/12/2019 20:54

Again @dimdarkashian - what is it you find unlikely?

You're the 3rd poster to come onto this thread and say it's not true but none of you have explained why.

OP posts:
SarahTancredi · 14/12/2019 20:56

Because duh...

It would never happen

No trans person would ever do this

If they do it they werent trans anyway

They have been doing this for years and no ones ever ever noticed.

Your all bigots anyway

Hmm
PreseaCombatir · 14/12/2019 21:00

Also, if it did happen, they probably deserved it

SarahTancredi · 14/12/2019 21:01

And theres no illness, condition, prognosis etc that means you had it harder than our most oppressed people in the world

SusieMyerson · 14/12/2019 21:03

Which subreddit was this posted on? I had an argument with what I can only assume was a 14 year old boy on reddit the other day about self Id and single sex toilets.( I was called a Terf, I agreed.) I don't know why I bother with reddit it's so toxic (but also has a lot of very interesting and educational subreddits)

Hulo · 14/12/2019 21:08

And it's happened between patients

www.lancasterguardian.co.uk/news/lancaster-mum-fear-men-locked-hospital-ward-transgender-patient-653048

So if patients, why not staff if we're denying biology all over

BlackForestCake · 14/12/2019 22:31

I had an argument with what I can only assume was a 14 year old boy on reddit the other day

I have been asking myself whether the people on Twitter with dog avatars posting "kill t*rfs" are actually taking puberty blockers themselves, and if that might explain why they argue like 10-year-olds.

loserssaywhat · 14/12/2019 22:50

I'm not sure why people are posting that they find this so unlikely to be true.
2 posters have linked articles where it's already happening!
There have already been accounts of these men in female prisons harassing and assaulting female inmates.
It's happening fgs. And it will only continue to happen. Open your eyes.
