Just saw the front page of the guardian at the supermarket - concern about use of rough sex defences.
www.theguardian.com/law/2019/nov/22/concern-over-use-rough-sex-gone-wrong-defence-uk-courts

The campaign group "we can't consent to this" was quoted.

I know that was set up by a poster on here after we discussed it on numerous threads do I just wanted to say well done. And let's keep the pressure up. I'm going to write to my MP.

Yes, well done to them indeed, this is excellent.

SapphosRock · 23/11/2019 16:33

I didn't realise she was a poster on here. Well done Fiona Mackenzie!
Men can't continue to get away with this.

Deliriumoftheendless · 23/11/2019 16:38

I saw this in the shop this morning - well done that woman!

QuentinWinters · 23/11/2019 16:49

Hope I haven't outed her

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3459232-We-Cant-Consent-to-This-all-the-sex-game-gone-wrong-defences

Sometime I think we just chat on here to no purpose then i see stuff like this and realise it does make a difference, it does help show how badly women are treated by society in lots of ways

So proud of the feminists on here

Bravo Fiona!

And yes, proud of the women here who centre women and not only talk and share information but write to people, go to meetings, share resources, set up campaigns, go and ask questions in M&S..... Flowers

It does make a real difference.

WomanDaresTo · 24/11/2019 09:58

I am so thrilled to have my very own mumsnet thread! First you lurk on FWR, then you feel compelled to register and post (just once), and then you're furious and your MN-birthed campaign is on front page.

We're also in the Sunday Times this morning
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/killers-go-free-thanks-to-fifty-shades-defence-6l9s5976q

And Joan Smith wrote a piece which I am thrilled by, because I luffs Joan Smith

Well done Fiona McKenzie (we can't consent to this)
Coldwatershock · 24/11/2019 10:02

I take my hat off to you. This is so important and at last public. As a parent of daughters my heart breaks for those parents. Well done to you and everyone working with' We Can't Consent'.

WomanDaresTo · 24/11/2019 10:03

And thank you

We get as much site traffic from mumsnetters as we do from any of these big pieces.

Just in case anyone's not seen what we're asking for:
wecantconsenttothis.uk/actnow

And keep an eye out this week, there is more press still to come. I think we spoke with 50 journalists over Friday and Saturday this week - if some good can come from what happened to Grace Millane, it's that it woke everyone up to the horror of these defences.

Woman this is FANTASTIC. Thank you so much for all you are doing for women. So important and you’re generating critical mass for actual legal change. Thank you. Flowers

It's good innit! We can make change.

We've done quite a bit of tv and radio with more this week. Will post links when I get a mo to put them up

BTW we are at twitter and Facebook and Instagram if you want to keep up with all the news...

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What an achievement!

Uncompromisingwoman · 24/11/2019 11:06

I've just read the article in the Times. Very well done to you Woman - and thank you. At times when it feels impossible to roll back this tide of sewage porn soaked ideology that our children and young people are drowning in, along you come. Flowers

CuriousaboutSamphire · 24/11/2019 11:09

And those comments... an apparently female poster "Surely it is not an issue of concent...... but of intent" - talkabout signing your own death warrant"

Sorry guv, I didn't mean to!

QuentinWinters · 24/11/2019 11:22

Brilliant article there.
I am however quite annoyed that Fifty Shade, a book, a work of fiction, is being pointed at, rather than the extreme porn on the internet.
That still implies women are driving this increase, by asking for BDSM after reading fifty shades. Whereas it's more likely to be men either getting into violence through porn, or already being violent and realising they can use it as a defence.

Awesome work - thank you Thanks

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/11/2019 14:40

Most of the Times comments seem to be missing the point that there is no proof at all that these women agreed to 'rough sex', but that there is now a convenient and fashionable defence for men who have committed straight forward murder by claiming it was just a consensual accident. Mostly from men, with an air of distinctly bruised ego, perceiving this as 'anti men'.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/11/2019 14:41

Maybe the point re 50 shades is that it provides such a convenient excuse? 'Oh, she read the book and wanted to try it'.Hmm nothing to do with the reality, of course.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 24/11/2019 14:53

Thank you Fiona, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you.

MoodLighting · 26/11/2019 16:05

Fraggling · 26/11/2019 17:21

Agree re citing 50 shades by the paper

Great work though thank you so much

BadgertheBodger · 27/11/2019 07:56

Brava Fiona! There is much which needs to change in law on this issue, and others which tie in, and it’s bloody brilliant you’re being heard Flowers
