Letters to the Editor: Trans clinic is failing vulnerable children

[email protected] 17 2019, 12:01am,
The Sunday Times

Your article “Sex-change sorrow” (News Review, last week) highlighted the Tavistock Centre, England’s only clinic devoted to treating transgender children. I am the governor who resigned from the Tavistock board after Dr David Bell wrote a report containing staff concerns about the rush to medical intervention, which bypassed thorough psychological evaluation.

I did so because I believed the trust tried to bury these important concerns about an experimental treatment of vulnerable children. It also displayed its prejudice by trying to discredit Dr Bell, a respected clinician, and the staff he spoke to.

The treatment of gender- dysphoric children has become highly politicised and, in many ways, operates outside good medical practice. There is pressure to view patients as consumers who have a choice over their gender, rather than people with underlying conflicts about themselves and their relationship with society.

In the absence of long-term outcome studies, services often quote Dutch research that found positive results for transition, ignoring the small size of the cohort. Ten other studies show that 80%-90% of gender-dysphoric children desist in their wish for social or medical transition if given psychological support.

We do not know why there has been such a rapid rise in late-onset gender dysphoria in girls in the past five years, and we show little interest in the damage done by treatment. When I was governor, the Tavistock was not following up children it had seen, and yet we are carrying on as if we know what we are doing.

The mental health services will look back at this episode as another dark chapter in the treatment of people with psychological difficulties.

Marcus Evans, psychoanalyst, former deputy clinical director in adolescent and adult clinical services at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 17/11/2019 10:47

that letter is absolutely damning

the Tavistock is treating children with gender dysphoria in the most shocking way, with no judgement or rigour applied to the treatment path

HumberHellraiser · 17/11/2019 10:50

Children as consumers! Says it all. Total disregard for welfare and health outcomes.

skql · 17/11/2019 11:18

what a brave man!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/11/2019 11:26

The treatment operates outside of good medical practice, that line really says it all doesn't it.

HandsOffMyRights · 17/11/2019 11:44

Thank you - this is an excellent letter.
One that needs sharing on the Frack thread.

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/11/2019 11:50

With one confirming piece of research constantly quoted and ten disproving ones never mentioned.

Highly politicised. Operating outside good standard policy. This is the case for almost every situation of concern for women and children in the changes being galloped through not just without consultation but with active silencing of those pointing out the damage being done.

For pete's sake will the government please wake up

GeordieTerf · 17/11/2019 11:52

Ive always said that I feel bad for the innocent medical staff caught up in all this nonsense. I hope they die their employers.

boatyardblues · 17/11/2019 11:54

Its quite astonishing that this medical scandal is unfolding in plain sight and no-one seems to be taking responsibility for investigating this. Shocking, actually.

WickedGoodDoge · 17/11/2019 12:06

He is very brave. He was just suspended from Twitter and Facebook for expressing his views - which has been done in a very professional manner, just like this letter! He’s back on Twitter under a new profile. Really hoping he’s not suspended again.

BovaryX · 17/11/2019 12:09

I agree. It’s just incredible. What is so shocking about it is the fast track to hormone blockers. It’s absolutely regressive and almost unbelievable that a young person who doesn’t confirm to rigid gender stereotypes is pathologised instead of being encouraged in their individuality

BovaryX · 17/11/2019 12:11

This is going to result in a shedload of lawsuits further down the line

BitOfFun · 17/11/2019 12:11

@GeordieTerf, I take it that was a DYAC for "sue"? Grin

Fantastic letter, thanks for posting. Can I ask about the ALAMY? Does that mean something or was it a typo?

BitOfFun · 17/11/2019 12:31

I think it's a photo credit that was caught by my copy and paste- apologies for the confusion!

Ok, there are so many MN abbreviations that I wasn't sure!Blush

WickedGoodDoge · 17/11/2019 12:34

Oh for goodness sake, his new Twitter account that he just set up yesterday is temporarily restricted!! Though you can still view it.

Some people are really targeting him. Angry

koshkat · 17/11/2019 12:40

Which party will look in to this properly and LISTEN to experts like him? The only one I can think that would is the Tory party and I am loathe to vote for them.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 17/11/2019 12:45

What a brilliant letter and he has a lot of courage, standing up to the TRA juggernaut. Well done sir, for trying to protect these vulnerable children and young people. When the shit hits the fan, your evidence will be invaluable and that makes me concerned for people who are brave enough to speak out. Courage.

Datun · 17/11/2019 12:46

We do not know why there has been such a rapid rise in late-onset gender dysphoria in girls in the past five years, and we show little interest in the damage done...

Well, for a start, they could stop teaching it in schools.

They could sanction Twitter and Facebook for targeting people like this man.

I agree, it's utterly shocking, sinister and scandalous.

No-one seems to be able to have an impact.

When the lawsuits do follow, I hope the people at Twitter and Facebook are held to account for their determination to censor ethics.

stillathing · 17/11/2019 12:48

Wow. Banned from Facebook and twitter? He's really viewed as dangerous by TRAs then isn't he? Because he seeks truth, and research, and transparency in medical practices? Because he thinks adults and children presenting as trans deserve psychological support and the evidence based treatment that we expect from the NHS?

Siameasy · 17/11/2019 16:35

Really good letter. I don’t buy physical newspapers and rarely read online. Would a letter like this get much exposure?
It’s so obvious that kids are being used as guinea pigs. I’ve watched I Am Jazz. Whilst that is in the US it was pretty clear that Jazz is a guinea pig

SisterWendyBuckett · 17/11/2019 16:46

Thanks for posting.

Marcus Evans continues to show his courage and integrity by highlighting the truth.

WickedGoodDoge · 17/11/2019 19:16

He’s back up and actively tweeting. Grin @marcusevanspsy1

Bezalelle · 17/11/2019 19:20

This proves to me that we are right. We are NOT "TERFS" or "bigots" or "feminazis".

We are right.

We are on the right side of history.

I only hope it isn't too late.
