Stop Funding Hate and Mimmymum

Stop Funding Hate are going after the Spectator on a few things, including the trans stuff. They seem to have teamed up with Mimmymum:

twitter.com/StopFundingHate/status/1192859057578741760?s=20

She and SFH are trying to lump the Spectator’s GC stuff in with genuinely horrible and stupid Muslim bashing from Rod Liddle’s deeply awful article last week.

By the looks of StopFunding’s timeline, some of the advertisers are wavering: Waterstones and Naked Wines seem to be suggesting they’ll pull money from the Spectator.

If anyone on Twitter wants to explain to the advertisers they are targeting that GC journalism is important, reasonable and has nothing at all in common with Islamophobia (or indeed Rod Liddle) I think it would be worth making the point.

Stop funding hate is basically promoting censorship, which is probably not what these companies want, ultimately.

Qcng · 09/11/2019 20:08

Imnobody4 well, quite, The right wing neo-liberals like the Tory party, the Blairites in the LP and other right wingers buy into trans ideology, because being anti-woman is par for the course.

It was right winger Tory Maria Miller who introduced and almost brought in Self-ID.

It's a cross party issue. Pretending it's a left wing problem is being blinkered.

Qcng · 09/11/2019 20:12

Imnobody4
Gender critical feminists are constantly being smeared as "teaming with the Christian far right", the Heritage Foundation etc.

Gender Critical feminism can't be both "totalitarian left" and "fundamentalist Christian Right" at the same time, can it.

Imnobody4 · 09/11/2019 22:22

Qcng
Pretending it's a left wing problem is being blinkered I don't think you get what I'm saying, it certainly wasn't that its only a left wing problem. I was expressing my frustration at the left calling on companies, advertisers, Twitter etc to stifle free speech on behalf of trans ideology under the banner of hate speech. In others words asking the capitalist machine that in any other circumstance they criticise as exploiters to be allies in silencing women.
Maria Miller's committee didn't have any dissenters on it.

In the US a lot of the megacorps take sides in the culture wars and it has led to this really bizarre situation, a bit like gendered nouns in French, where random things are republican or democrat and nobody quite knows why. Apparently hotdogs at a picnic are right wing. And so is fruit pie! Only last night my friend was saying, hilariously, why did we let them have PIE?! Strategic error there.

I think the same thing is bedding in here now. It's always been a bit like that but it's reifying.

theflushedzebra · 10/11/2019 14:36

Grin Kolah. I'd def want the pie. That's pie not P.I.E. Wink

DuMondeB · 10/11/2019 14:50

The Speccie have been very protective of their controversial authors, including GC feminists, so I doubt they’ll give a shiny shit. Any advertisers will know what the Spectator stands for and who it’s audience is. The subscription model means it’s less reliant on advertisers anyway.

Douglas Murray and Lionel Shriver are both on the staff writer list, they recently participated in a Spectator organised talk critiquing identity politics.

Megan Murphy is published more or less fortnightly in the American version, which seems to have started only AFTER she was banned from Twitter, so they know exactly what they are doing too.

Mimmy mum is barking up the wrong tree this time.

Hey, Waterstones! I usually buy a coupla hundred quids worth of books from you at this time of year. Cave to this and I will come into store to choose titles and then order them from a different seller online instead. I won’t be the only one. The physical book store business can’t afford to alienate their core customers - I would imagine there is a fuck of a lot of crossover between Waterstones customers and Speccie readers.

SandyDrawsBadly · 10/11/2019 15:47

I used to have time for Stop Funding Hate, but it’s just turned into “stop funding people we think are a bit mean.”

Apropos of nothing, I was just thinking earlier that if I was in deep denial about being a living example of Munchausen’s by proxy, I’d really want to throw myself into getting others to agree with me and distract myself with campaigning to punish those who didn’t go along with it.

Siameasy · 10/11/2019 16:06

Basically it’s mimmymum and the others holding up a sign saying “don’t look here, nothing to see, move along”.
When the shit hits the fan people like us here will have a clear conscience

Melroses · 10/11/2019 16:31

Hey, Waterstones! I usually buy a coupla hundred quids worth of books from you at this time of year.

I keep thinking that if Waterstones are going to take issue with what the Spectator publishes, then they will have to be prepared for people outside their company censoring the books they stock. Once you open the door to this way of thinking, it can backfire.

Glenthebattleostrich · 10/11/2019 18:56

I've tweeted naked wines (who I spend an embarrassing amount with) and cancelled my account.

Siameasy · 10/11/2019 19:50

I don’t get this idea that by advertising in the Spectator eg Vodaphone are agreeing with what every single article ever says.

It wouldn’t be possible for every advertiser to agree with every article ever written. Keep going and there won’t be any newspapers reporting on anything

Stop Funding Hate are authoritarian bullies who will never be satisfied and I think big companies should use this moment to stand up for free speech

SunsetBeetch · 27/01/2020 07:17

They're at it again, going after the Mail on Sunday for their article on Selina Todd (granted, the headline is rather inflammatory, but did they read the rest of the article?).

"Imagine how this headline from today's Mail on Sunday would read - and be received - if you replaced the word "trans" with the name of any other minority group. #StartSpreadingLove #StopFundingHate #UKPressTransphobia t.co/JKTQmcnaDF "

twitter.com/StopFundingHate/status/1221402145171345409?s=19

They are getting monstered in the replies, and are swiftly blocking everyone.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 27/01/2020 07:43

Waterstones?

Oh i hope they don’t do anything silly....ive still got my birthday voucher to spend

And a book store of all places!!!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 27/01/2020 08:06

I stopped following SFH on FB because they started going too far down the blindly woke route. Preachy bastards.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/01/2020 08:08

They blocked me for putting some smug virtue signalling arsehole straight on his false figures. While leaving all his posts up.

Melroses · 27/01/2020 10:06

Thanks for the update - I had forgotten they had gone for the Spectator before.

TimeLady · 27/01/2020 10:22

I'm wondering which Speccie writer will be given the opportunity to pen the response Grin

Jeez, harassing the press in such circumstances is surely shooting yourself right in the foot.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/01/2020 10:27

#startspreadinglove

Oh the irony.

GenderfreeLang · 27/01/2020 10:32

Trans dont have a case so are piggy backing on an anti Muslim case - sounds about right! In Ireland they piggy backed gay marriage to get self-ID...

With Kiera Bell now co-claimant on the case against GIDS if GIDS loose the doors will be open for detransitioners to take legal action for compensation against all involved.

nevermorelenore · 27/01/2020 10:38

I like that their Twitter feed is full of people who were just this moment about to renew their home insurance/buy an expensive holiday but then they saw the company were engaging in wrongthink.

Mate, we know you weren't.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/01/2020 10:45

GIDS loose the doors will be open for detransitioners to take legal action for compensation against all involved.

I sincerely hope they do. The potential for those detransitioners to experience long term health issues up to and including chronic illness that may prevent their working, seems alarmingly high, they may well need that compensation. The idea of a generation of these detransitioners fighting their way through PIP on top of dealing with the loss of their fertility, loss of their sexuality, the mental distress, this is absolutely something that GIDS and the NHS and the government stand responsible for.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 27/01/2020 13:11

Wow. Twitter comments are excellent. SFH will have to block half their followers at this rate 😂

Freespeecher · 27/01/2020 19:32

Bet the Speccie love being anointed the Last Bastion of free speech! This may backfire on the would-be censors, excellent.
