Jeez, I studied art at Goldsmiths in the 1990s, and I thought it was batshit back then! This is so bonkers it’s hard to understand what’s actually going on (or it could just be that the article is really badly written).

Doyoumind · 07/11/2019 16:00

We don't know the real identities of anyone on Twitter (apart from blue ticks). It shouldn't matter what the identity or sexual orientation of an academic is. There has obviously been some misrepresentation but I find it's interesting that she created an unlikeable character and, I presume, based on her gender identity got away with being hateful.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 16:04

Oh the outrage when a woman has the nerve to claim to be transgender... she is an artist, a sex / violence artist. She was merely living the experience for her art! I think she said she had to do something as her real self was getting in the way of her art!!!!!!!

Who did she hurt? Really... who did she threaten, beat, , assault, rape?

And Tippy Rampage wa, as far as I remember from another article a while ago a collective of about 70 people!

That article is really badly written, though, in all honesty, the basic premise behind the non binary life and book is equally opaque. As is much of Mellor's work, I think.

PencilsInSpace · 07/11/2019 16:05

I loved this from one of the twitter comments:

But where performance of gender is the issue I think there are many nuances that are missed within the binary you set between 'pretending' to be non binary and 'really being' non binary

Mellor's just queering the boundary between 'pretending' and 'really being'. This is excellent stuff and I look forward to a collaboration with Dr Rachel 'it doesn't matter if you chat bollocks' McKinnon.

Doyoumind · 07/11/2019 16:07

Just seen an article where she was discussing this 18 months ago so not sure why this is news now.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 16:08

I read that and couldn't make up my mind whether he(?) got it and just couldn't work out how to express it or was just too confused to make sense on any level!

And a Tippy McK book is one I'd pay a penny or two for Grin

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 16:09

Crikey! 18 months ago. I knew it was a while ago, but that long??

RoyalCorgi · 07/11/2019 16:09

Mellor's just queering the boundary between 'pretending' and 'really being'.

Exactly. If we accept that people's identity is what they say there is, does the concept of 'pretending' have any value at all? At the time she claimed to be Mx Tippy Rampage, then she really was Mx Tippy Rampage, according to transactivist logic.

research.gold.ac.uk/24217/

She didn't exactly hide what she was doing, did she?

nauticant · 07/11/2019 16:20

It's an example of something I'm seeing more and more of. Rather than just elevating one class of person over another, some behaviours* are permitted by one class while exactly the same behaviours are prohibited by another class. It doesn't look very progressive to me.

happydappy2 · 07/11/2019 16:42

Hmmm so one commentor was outraged that this person appropriated a trans identity, whilst not offering any safety to genuine trans people.

Kind of women are pissed off about when men appropriate our identity!

KatvonHostileExtremist · 07/11/2019 16:53

Smirk

The LITERAL horror of it. She wasn't VALID after all.

womanaf · 07/11/2019 17:01

Imagine pretending to be something you aren’t.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/11/2019 17:04

This is hilarious. It shows how - loads of people must have thought ‘is she talking the piss???’ But noone was allowed to say anything.

So there you have it. You can get away with murder by just saying the magic words.

Datun · 07/11/2019 17:17

She was just pretending not to be a man or a woman, rather than actually not being a man or a woman?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2019 17:22

Perhaps Piers Morgan should interview her?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 17:25

She was Borg... and Individual - dead and living Grin

nauticant · 07/11/2019 17:26

She was pretending to be special without a licence.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 17:33

Oh oh! 7 rather 007?

HandsOffMyRights · 07/11/2019 17:36

Couldn't have happened to a broader minded university. Remember this?

littlbrowndog · 07/11/2019 17:37

She was the BORG

DuMondeB · 07/11/2019 17:47

This is amazing. The hypocrisy - it’s fine to pretend you are female, but it’s not fine to pretend you aren’t female? What a crock of shit,

I’m a fine art graduate from G/S. I’m going to email In support of Mellor.

Fieldofgreycorn · 07/11/2019 17:49

Now back to Collaterlie Sisters in the studio.

crosstalk · 07/11/2019 18:54

Hmm. I can see the irony and that s/he signalled it 18 months ago and the possible value of it. But if she was a tutor rather than teacher to some fragile people (a) did the university agree (b) at what stage did the students know?

DuMondeB · 07/11/2019 18:59

Goldsmiths FA tutors are required to be practising artists, the institution doesn’t object to anyone’s artistic output, they just don’t get hired again the following academic year.

One of my tutors made a massive ball out of packing tape (and went on to win the Turner Prize).
