Why do celebrities think their opinion is in any way valid, just because they're famous? Why do people bother to listen to them and write articles about their beliefs?

One more woman who is never going to have to worry about sharing spaces with men because she’ll never end up on an NHS ward or in a shelter. Hmm

everythingcrossed · 01/10/2019 08:28

She's not being that controversial, surely? She's saying what many of us feel that those attributes that are traditionally "masculine" are often found in women and vice versa. I don't think she is saying that, to use a cliche, a male who likes pink is a female.

I’ve often wondered that.
I lost respect for Helen Mirren when she claimed she never knew about Harvey Weinstein abusing women. Everyone with even the smallest connection to the film world knew.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 01/10/2019 08:39

Everyone with even the smallest connection to the film world knew.

South Park did an episode about the Weinstein brothers years ago, and the guys who make it are a lot more peripherally connected to the film industry than Mirren is.

Daysofpearlyspencer · 01/10/2019 08:42

I lost respect for her after years of wanging on about being a staunch republican but she couldn't get up to the palace quick enough for the Damehood

KUGA · 01/10/2019 08:48

Who cares what she thinks ?.It`s what we think that counts.

TimeLady · 01/10/2019 08:51

Yet another one conflating gender and sex. She's right about us all being somewhere on the gender spectrum, but doesn't seem to understand the fundamental difference between behavioural gender and biological sex.

She's clearly not a stupid woman but, seriously, how can anyone be that dumb?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/10/2019 08:51

Didn't she say she didn't believe in binary sexuality rather than binary sex? Unless she was misusing sexuality I actually agree with what I have read she said, other than that twaw.

Cooroo · 01/10/2019 08:52

It's in The Times too. I've commented but they are moderating.
All she's really done is reject gender stereotypes, how can she confuse that with biology??

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 01/10/2019 08:53

I got curious and looked it up. The South Park episode that first parodied the Weinstein brothers aired in 2003. So it was common knowledge what utter creeps those two were to anyone working around the film industry by then.

When she talks about 'sexuality', she's describing gender.

ScreamingBeans · 01/10/2019 09:09

I lost respect for her when she blamed rape victims for rape.

NotBadConsidering · 01/10/2019 09:22

Joke in an episode of 30 Rock, aired in March 2012:

Jenna Maroney: Oh, please. I'm not afraid of anyone in show business. I turned down intercourse with Harvey Weinstein on no less than three occasions. Out of five.

Everyone knew.

SallyGoRoundTheSun · 01/10/2019 09:40

I think Mirren is quite stupid.

Dame Helen said that she would say the same about herself as she has a ‘number of male qualities’. ‘I hate talking about my feelings, I never want to go to the doctor and I’m a brilliant map-reader. I have a lot of what people might call male qualities. But I certainly look like a woman,’ she said

She said that she doesn’t see men as being men and woman as being women

I think one would have to be quite stupid to say that. She is 74 and apparently doesn't understand people have personalities - that they aren't just a collection of stereotypes.

Being sexually attractive to men has been hugely important to Mirren. She's a good actress but playing up that side has always been an element- particularly as she got older.

She is also in favour of legalised brothels and has given an endorsement on that awful website which promotes prostitutes for disabled men.

ScreamingBeans · 01/10/2019 09:51

One of the things I've realised about these actors who appear really intelligent, like Emma Thompson and Helen Mirren and Helena Bonham Carter and Juliet Stephenson, is that that intelligence is part of their acting persona. It's not real.

I don't know anything about HBC, but JS, ET and HM have said and done such crassly stupid things, that I'm satisfied that their bruited intelligence (which is really just having a posh accent and having been to a good school so they have a base level of knowledge not always possessed by working class actors, of which there are fewer and fewer) is Not All That. So now when actors appear to me to be intelligent, I assume it's part of their persona - that they're acting intelligence - until I hear more.

Bezalelle · 01/10/2019 09:58

What actresses like Emma Thompson, Mirren, and Bonham-Carter have in common is that they're from wealthy and privileged backgrounds. You don't see a working class actor like Maxine Peake throwing women under the bus. Biological sex is writ larger when you have less money and fewer resources.

lolaflores · 01/10/2019 09:59

An actor needs emotional intelligence and the skill of artifice so delivering statements dripping with confidence whilst based in very little understanding is what they do for breakfast. It is also profile raising and keeps the actor relevant. With it. No one could accuse HM of being a nana or mummsy.

SingingLily · 01/10/2019 10:13

Agree. She makes a very good living reading aloud someone else's words and feigning emotion according to the director's requirements. Good luck to her. I'm sure spending the whole of your working life in an artificial world qualifies you to be authoritative on something but I'm not convinced this is it.

And the fact that she has a new series to promote and needs the headlines, any headlines, is pure coincidence.

BiologyIsReal · 01/10/2019 10:38

Her statements are a good example of muddled thinking.
Conflating sexuality, gender, personality and transgenderism and cramming it all into a few paragraphs. Proves you don't necessarily have to be long- winded to produce a word salad.

Justhadathought · 01/10/2019 10:41

Helen Mirren is confusing sexuality/preferences/attractions with 'genderism'. I'm sure most people would not rule out being 'on a spectrum' of sorts when it comes to sexuality.

Justhadathought · 01/10/2019 10:43

The people that are most confused in all of this are TRA ideologists. They think they have discovered something new or revolutionary.

Annasgirl · 01/10/2019 10:43

Oh glad you were all up and awake before me!!! I came on to post about this after seeing the headline in the DF Blush.

And I'm with you all that she is, like many other UK actresses, someone who plays intelligent but actually is not intelligent (confusing gender and sex is something my 7 year old would not do).

Justhadathought · 01/10/2019 10:46

One of the things I've realised about these actors who appear really intelligent, like Emma Thompson and Helen Mirren and Helena Bonham Carter and Juliet Stephenson, is that that intelligence is part of their acting persona. It's not real\

Don't forget that these actresses live, and mix, in a bohemian world, in which holding to certain seemingly radical notions about individuality is the norm.

vaginafetishist · 01/10/2019 11:31

I've found genderism to be massive in the theatre world. Absolutely uncritically accepted. I was put off one of my favourite directors, Emma Rice, when she instituted 'gender blind' casting and made Bill from Malory Towers non binary!!
