Just saw this article and my first thought was I wonder what the ratio of biological males to females winning this will be. (Sorry I don’t know how to post links.)

Just to add, I’m a long time lurker and occasional poster (regular name-changer though as quite often inadvertently give away details about my real life 🤦‍♀️).

You can make the link just by adding two square brackets at the beginning and end. xy

No this can't be true! Women lose out again!!!

happydappy2 · 23/09/2019 17:06

This is the problem-if you can't name sex, you can't name sexism.

Dyrne · 23/09/2019 17:07

To be honest, I’m surprised they’ve axed the different awards completely - was fully expecting Sam Smith to be awarded “best female artist” in all awards for the foreseeable since they’d say he’s clearly eligible to compete in both categories Sad

Anonymouse99 · 23/09/2019 17:07

lion heart thank you

I’ve seen a Sam Smith gig.

Not the best anything.

Puggled · 23/09/2019 17:09

The BBC report on this suggests otherwise for MTV awards and the National TV awards: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-49794175

Anonymouse99 · 23/09/2019 17:14

Puggled just read the BBC article and the most shocking thing was Piers Morgan having a non-sexist opinion.

Anonymouse99, yes! Not someone I'd expect that from. Still, the BBC has found two awards ceremonies that seem to have worked out OK so far. I think I'll have to see if I can find if others have had the same results.

Fraggling · 23/09/2019 17:23

Half the amount of awards is a bit crap.

Loads of people miss out!

Are they trying to save money

MockersthefeMANist · 23/09/2019 17:30

I think the Academy Awards recognises artistes in a male or female role, so Linda Hunt in The Year Of Living Dangerously was a bloke, and Jaye Davidson in The Crying Game was a girl.

Puggled · 23/09/2019 17:43

Grammy awards went gender neutral in 2012, and this is what has happened since www.statista.com/statistics/801259/gender-grammy-awards-nominees-category/

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2019 17:47

I don't think so.

Jaye Davidson's role was not 'a girl' , that was kinda the point wasn't it?

He got several best supporting actor nominations (inc Academy awards)

Though it seems in Chicago they couldn't make up their minds and he was nominated as both the most promising actor and actress.

And Linda Hunt won a load of Best supporting actress awards for that role.

just read the BBC article and the most shocking thing was Piers Morgan having a non-sexist opinion.

He's one of the many nonwoke blokes who understands what 'woman' means, and the effects that genderism has on women's sports etc.

RuffleCrow · 23/09/2019 17:54

Oh ffs back to the bad old days when it was near impossible for women to have any power or status in music. Really really bad idea. AngrySad

CharlieParley · 23/09/2019 18:07

As Caroline Criado-Perez has proven in her book, gender neutral is detrimental to females because the whole defaults to male. So more women will lose out.

RuffleCrow · 23/09/2019 18:14

Hopefully we'll get a groundswell of female musicians rising up against this - starting with previous winners - much like we've seen in sport. It's not a level playing field to begin with.

RedToothBrush · 23/09/2019 20:43

They could just solve the problem by not having a gender award but having an awarded based on what sex you are...

Milanimilani · 24/09/2019 03:33

Do you not think that this is just an excuse to not recognise uppity women and to return to the good old days where men got all the awards?

ChattyLion · 24/09/2019 09:47

Having a women’s category did at least force the awarding panels to recognise some women’s achievements.. now what?

Anonymouse99 · 24/09/2019 09:57

Do you not think that this is just an excuse to not recognise uppity women and to return to the good old days where men got all the awards?

Exactly.

OP posts:
ChattyLion · 24/09/2019 09:58

Presumably it will be ‘neutrally’ based on who sells the most.

Juells · 24/09/2019 09:58

@Puggled - that's premium content, so can't be seen.

Puggled · 24/09/2019 12:41

Apologies, Juells. It came up OK first time and only reported the premium content when I tried to load it again.
But the numbers were along the lines of more than 90% male nominees for Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Producer of the Year. Song of the Year was about 80% male and only Best New Artist got anywhere near parity.
