Genderbending 80s men who have come out as GC

We've had Marylin, who knows a thing or two about being a man and wearing eyeliner.

I think we now have Marc Almond, who just tweeted this:

"I always wanted a World without labels, One Big Melting Pot as Blue Mink said( sorry bad song ) or People Are People as Depeche said. Now I have over 100 to choose from. Sorry, not playing that game."

When I was growing up we had a smorgasboard of men who "expanded the bandwidth" of being male, and didn't think that long hair and skirts, never mind a "feeling", made them female. Boy George didn't call himself Boy for nothing. I am really enjoying those that are stepping forward now.

Didn't David Beckham get a bit more famous for wearing a sarong once?
I wonder what he'd say about that meaning he's Non-Binary or whatever.

David Bowie would have definitely been GC RIP. He was intelligent and non conforming. And of independent thinking.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 17/09/2019 12:12

At the time I seem to recall David Beckham being described as metrosexual.

As for the 80s, one thing the trans privilege activists have managed is to instill a new fondness for the 80s in me. I grew up in the 80s, born in 74 so virtually no recollection of the 70s the 80s were my whole childhood. And they were grim. Mass unemployment, football hooliganism, IRA bombs, AIDS epidemic, heroin addicts..........but the music was joyous and fun and freeing!

I adored the new romantics, Adam Ant as the Dandy Highwayman, later the glam rock, the hair metal, the goths.

Fun, remember that? The current era seems so puritanical by comparison.

MockersthefeMANist · 17/09/2019 12:15

Mick Ronson was very reluctant to put on the eye shadow and glitter, but Bowie assured him it would help him get the girls.

And lo, it came to pass...

ArcheryAnnie · 17/09/2019 12:20

It's funny, but my immediate reaction to the idea of David Bowie being on this list (much as I have loved his music) was an immediate recoil, because of Bowie being straight/bi, not being gay. (Also because of Bowie's rapes, but that's another issue.)

I'm really unsettled by my own reactions, because I am very firmly of the "there's no women's clothes, or men's clothes, there's just clothes" school of mind, but I think the last decade has put a bone-deep fear of straight men who use a veneer of gender nonconformity to predate on women, which had overwritten my previous positive experiences of and attitudes towards men prepared to wear what they like.

...yet another way in which bloody TRAs have ruined everything. But I have hope! One day, a skirt will just be a skirt.

Isn't that most pop stars from the 80s? And most goths, and the glitter rock guys, and the glam rock guys, and...

I dunno if you can even call it GNC if that many people are doing it. Almost as if the idea that only women should wear makeup and flouncy/tight and sexy clothes is totally arbitrary and linked to cultural trends rather than some sort of deep inner sense of self.

I'm kind of surprised Boy George has been as quiet as he has tbh, patience is not normally among his virtues.

Now this is interesting. For various reasons I have a long history with men of the makeup and androgynous clothes wearing variety, none of whom identify as trans as far as I'm aware. So my longtime assumption is that that's no big deal and that those men are in fact part of "my tribe", as it were. But after exposure to so many truly unpleasant and dangerous AGP TRAs over the last few years I find myself side-eyeing blokes I've known, or known of, for a long time to see if there are any signs of AGP, and I dread the day one of them announces that he has a "girl's brain" or some stupid sexist bollocks like that. Hasn't happened yet, but I'm adding it to the "gender as a religion ruins everything" list.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 17/09/2019 12:54

He's already deleted it though. So brave!

ArcheryAnnie · 17/09/2019 12:57

I know! But screenshots are forever.

Why has he deleted it?

ArcheryAnnie · 17/09/2019 13:10

Presumably to avoid a tide of shit coming his way? It was a bit cryptic to start off with.

I'm rather enjoying the "Tainted Lav" jokes and the "He said hello then waved goodbye" comments, though.

Boy George won't dare say anything. It would wreck his attempt to have a career in Beverly hills darling.

Fakeness is the order of the day in his world. And I doubt he's any friend to feminists.

Campervan69 · 17/09/2019 13:19

Marc Almond also posted about the toilet situation it would appear.

Not the 80s but now, good old John Maclean

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/09/2019 13:44

Oh god then this one came up and I'm CRYING 🤣

DianaBrackley · 17/09/2019 13:56

Richard O'Brien (Rocky and Crystal Maze) and Barry Humphries (Dame Edna) are both somewhat GC I think. I know they're not the same line as Marc Almond and David Bowie but the Rocky Horror show is definitely genderbending!

As a complete aside ArcheryAnnie, can I just thank you for the work you've done over the past five years on this forum. I'm sure there are other posters as well but I was browsing some of the older threads yesterday and noticed you in particular highlighting potential issues that have since come to pass. My sincerest thanks to you and all the others that kept informing me of the wider implications of acceptance above everything. It's meant that I've been forewarned enough to educate my DC that sex doesn't equal gender, long before the topic has come up in their school education.

Doyoumind · 17/09/2019 13:59

I came here to see if anyone had seen the tweets as I was too late to see them.

I've been waiting for more of these kinds of figures like Marc Almond to speak out. Marilyn got piled on and doesn't really talk about it any more. In the wake of Sam Smith I wondered if Boy George would say anything, despite saying twaw before but not being very clued up. I've had my eye on his twitter. In the last couple of days he's actually potentially shifted but being slightly vague about it all so it's hard to tell.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/09/2019 14:18

I can see them do you.

I think that the realisation that as gay men they're expected to find trans men attractive may begin to peak them. And there's an increasing number of trans men around thanks so ROGD in teen girls. Plus legends like Martina etc.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/09/2019 14:20

Marc Almond - wow. I would have guessed him as otherwise. Good lad. Is there anyone over 30 who believes this guff anyway?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/09/2019 14:20

Not unless they have AGP, no.

Goosefoot · 17/09/2019 14:29

Alas, several of the people I know that are real believers are old enough that they should know better.
