Genderbending 80s men who have come out as GC

We've had Marylin, who knows a thing or two about being a man and wearing eyeliner.

I think we now have Marc Almond, who just tweeted this:

"I always wanted a World without labels, One Big Melting Pot as Blue Mink said( sorry bad song ) or People Are People as Depeche said. Now I have over 100 to choose from. Sorry, not playing that game."

When I was growing up we had a smorgasboard of men who "expanded the bandwidth" of being male, and didn't think that long hair and skirts, never mind a "feeling", made them female. Boy George didn't call himself Boy for nothing. I am really enjoying those that are stepping forward now.

Boy George has swallowed the KoolAid.
I remember some pretty misogynistic comments he tweeted a way back on the subject.

birdsdestiny · 17/09/2019 15:12

Yes Boy George has swallowed it wholesale and has been unpleasant to women who raise concerns.

Those videos of John McLean are interesting. I've never really seen him before.

I'm not quite sure what to make of him. Maintains he is a man, but looks like a woman, deliberately. He seems to thoroughly enjoy the role-playing tho. Bit of a thesp maybe.

tinabloodysparkle · 17/09/2019 15:40

Thanks for posting the Marc almond tweets, I wasn't able to see them on Twitter Hmm

feelingverylazytoday · 17/09/2019 15:53

You can't read other people's minds or second guess them, especially dead people. How ridiculous.
David Bowie would definitely been GC Would he? His son doesn't appear to be, and he had a few transexual friends. Perhaps that would have given him a different point of view.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/09/2019 15:56

Being GC doesn’t mean you won’t associate with transsexuals - why would it?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/09/2019 15:59

Apparently the Almond tweed has gone ‘pffffffft’.

feelingverylazytoday · 17/09/2019 16:35

Didn't say it did, LordProf, I said it might have given him a different point of view. Most people are influenced by their own experiences. Of course people can be GC in some aspects and not in other aspects, it doesn't have to be all black and white.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/09/2019 18:14

There is an interview with bowie being questioned about wearing a woman's dress. He counters that as he was wearing it, it was a man's dress. So gc sounds feasible. And that quote sums most of it up for me.

Gingerkittykat · 17/09/2019 20:01

Are the TRAs going to bombard Mark Almond and Boy George with insults and threats for being TERFS?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/09/2019 20:08

If so maybe they can do a Rowling and claim it was a middle aged moment/didn't mean it honest.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/09/2019 20:09

I can’t see Mark or George giving a flying duck.

Goosefoot · 17/09/2019 20:21

I am a little inclined to be hesitant about assuming people who are dead would take a particular view. We can't know how they would have interpreted all the things that led us up to this point. Many people who are now believers wouldn't have been 15 years ago, it's what has happened since then that changed their thinking.

I do think you can point out that someone like Bowie was able to express whatever he wanted as a man, and it worked. I do think he was someone with some insight into what happens when you get caught up in certain kinds of social fads.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/09/2019 21:31

Datun, he's a master make up artist.

The filums on his channel about makeup are hypnotising...

"Take a laura mercier brush number 4.67801..."

But he's very clear he is a man. Who wears black and hides from the sun. It is interesting and his reflection on how he is treated with make up on is illuminating.

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/09/2019 21:32

I only learnt about him here!

NeurotrashWarrior · 17/09/2019 21:34

Apparently only wears make up for work.

I just discovered John Maclean www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3195860-I-just-discovered-John-Maclean

I always think of this when men say they have female thoughts or feelings. As a man is thinking/feeling it, they're not women's thoughts/feelings are they?

Good point.

There's always this assumption that gender-critical people don't know any trans people. It's nonsense, of course. (Plus, of course, gender-critical people sometimes are also transexual themselves.)

Eddie Izzard used to say that and look how he turned out. A lot of people I previously though capable of a modicum of critical thought and scepticism have turned out to be hugely disappointing so I no longer make assumptions.
