YouGov poll finds 56% agree with the right to self identify - poll commissioned by Pink News

From a newspaper article:

The research, conducted by LGBT+ publication Pink News, found that out of 1,720 adults, 56 per cent of them support self-identification, fuelling hopes among campaigners that legislation allowing this will be included in the Gender Recognition Act, which the Government has vowed to reform.

Commenting on the findings, PinkNews CEO Benjamin Cohen said: “More than two years since the prime minister made a groundbreaking pledge in favour of trans equality, it is clear that the public backs reforming the law to allow trans people to self-identify in order to receive a Gender Recognition Certificate.”

(and)

In May, transgender women’s rights to use the pond were formalised following a consultation conducted by the City of London Corporation, which canvassed pond users’ attitudes to gender identity and trans women's access to the space.

Similar to PinkNews' findings, the consultation had a similarly positive outcome, finding that 65 per cent of people felt that trans people should not suffer discrimination.

(Clearly the Indie didn't register the number of comments they got at that time about how the London Corporation survey was invalid - or have chosen to ignore them)

These seem to be the survey results and it shows they have avoided any real questions about would you still support self id in prisons, womens refuges etc..

What a duplicitous piece of work. And embarrassingly obvious.

As far as I'm concerned anyone can 'identify' as whatever they like - identify as a carrot for all I care.
Don't expect me to go along with your immature little games though.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 05/07/2019 06:49

I'd have answered yes!

All about how you phrase that question. Whether you use sex or gender. Sneaky. And full of shit

Ereshkigal · 05/07/2019 08:31

Its interesting to note that that the Fair Play for Women poll spelled out the reality of self ID and got very different results (only 18% supported unregulated self ID)

It's also interesting that PN commissioned a YouGov poll last year and got much the same result as the Populous poll you're referring to. When they posed the question as do you think you should be able to change the gender on your passport or birth certificate without the involvement of a doctor. Self ID isn't popular. They are lying liars who lie.

If anyone has an archive copy of that it looks like they are trying to memory hole it:

Just googled and the cached description is still clearly there but when you click on it...

This FPFW piece breaks down the result and gives the question asked in last year's poll.

Ereshkigal · 05/07/2019 08:35

“Do you think a person should or should not have to obtain a DOCTOR’S APPROVAL to change their legal gender on official documentation (e.g. birth certificate or passport).”
Only 18% said they should not.

The point I was trying to make is that once the media reports a "fact" then other bits of the media just report it as the accepted truth.

There was no link in the article to the actual survey results and even if there was I doublt many people would bother.

And it also illustrates that although the Independent was alerted to how flawed the Corporation of London Survey was, they still just report the results of that as "fact".

Women / women's groups just do not have the access to or (I hate to say it) the respect of the media so they just continure to ignore us and construct a male reality.

Isn't there a saying about how it is the victors who write history.

It's time to wheel out this wonderful clip from Yes Prime Minister again. You can get people to say anything you want with the right poll...

Floisme · 05/07/2019 19:13

They're not winning. If they were winning they wouldn't be resorting to dodgy surveys which can still barely manage to drum up majority support.

R0wantrees · 05/07/2019 23:11

They will also be using the question about gay parents for the lobbying for US style commencial surrogacy.
Pink News will be involved with this.

BatShite · 05/07/2019 23:41

When its actually spelt out clearly what 'self ID' is, the results are very very different. Also seems a bit disingenuous to have a random self ID question right in the middle of a bunch of gay rights questions, basically making out that self ID is something to do with gay rights? Unless thats not quite how it was asked..not sure how this works.

They seem very influential still in Westminster!

Jeremy Corbyn Opinion piece in Pink News

(extract)

"In the past month, it has been reported that hate crimes against trans people are up 81%. This has been made worse by the Government’s delay in reforming the Gender Recognition Act, but it’s what happens when there is a concerted campaign by some in the media. That horrible anti-trans campaign mirrors attacks against gay men and lesbians in the 1980s. We must stand in solidarity with the trans community so they can live their lives with the dignity and respect they deserve." (continues)

Penny Mordant MP
"Penny Mordaunt: Gender Recognition Act reform plans will be ‘out the door in the next few weeks"

(extract)
Speaking at the PinkNews summer reception at Church House in Westminster, London, on July 4, Mordaunt said that not only would the government announce the results of the public consultation, which received over 100,000 responses, but that she hoped they would also announce what they planned to do following the results.

“I’m hopeful that we will be able to get both the response to the consultation and what we’re planning on doing out there before the summer recess,” Mordaunt told PinkNews.

“We’re working to get it out the door as soon as possible. I’m sorry it’s taken so long, but we needed to do a proper job on it.” (continues)

YouGov poll finds 56% agree with the right to self identify - poll commissioned by Pink News
Xanthangum · 09/07/2020 10:11

Apologies for resurrecting a zombie thread but YouGov have re-run this poll and the number of people who think that people should be able to self-id from one sex to the other has dropped from 56% last year to 50% this year.

'Don't know has gone up - 21% to 23%.

There's no narrative or analysis of the sample or anything, but this is the link to their survey page: yougov.co.uk/topics/overview/survey-results

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 09/07/2020 10:15

@ZebrasAreBras

Even with a horrifically loaded question, they only got 56% saying yes.
Not a great result there

I don’t believe most polls anymore...either way

It so depends on how the question is asked that the results are useless

I tried to complete a survey for a local pub re covid...I couldn’t do it because the questions were so loaded

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 09/07/2020 10:15

xanth !!!

😀

Interesting that its dropped though

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 09/07/2020 10:16

I got as far as july on the date and assumed the year

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 09/07/2020 10:24

Self-id gender - absolutely! No one should be made to perform any gender they don't want to.

Self ID sex however - obviously not, because that's ridiculous and impossible.

ItsLateHumpty · 09/07/2020 10:27

I got as far as july on the date and assumed the year

I nearly did too!

But that’s an interesting shift in a year. Maybe the sunshine is working 🤞

newrubylane · 09/07/2020 10:39

I think I did this survey and I remember thinking there wasn't much context. They usually ask for feedback at the end, and I usually don't bother, but I'm going to start paying more attention and flaggin stuff like this.

PotholeParadise · 09/07/2020 10:55

Hmm. I have agreed that people have the right to self-identify as foxes before. There has been no point at which I would have said that people identifying as foxes were entitled to go on the waiting list to be housed at an RSPCA wild animal rescue.

In fact, I'm still happy to call people by whatever pronouns they like, but I don't agree that self-identity is enough to entitle you to a place at a ladies-only or men's-only swim session

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/07/2020 10:58

Wings Over Scotland has commissioned polls on self-ID before. Some interesting results:

Exactly. They don't clarify that this is essentially what it means, as the question is too woolly. It's some fluffy idea about choosing your own gender. So there's no way of knowing whether or not respondees understand the legal ramifications.

It's worth remembering that when at the time of the GRA consultation Pink News ran a poll which did spell out the legal implications of self ID people resoundingly said no. I think it was 82%.
