Royal Astronomical Society calls out TERFs

FemaleAndLearning · 01/07/2019 21:35

The diversity arm of the RAS is proudly saying it will not have TERFs giving opinions on its Twitter account.
I am truly shocked and upset that a scientific institution bloke this thinks this is acceptable.

At least someone called it out as hate speech.

Original post should say like not bloke!

What was this allegedly horrible remark? Simply that women-only grants should be reserved for women?

littlbrowndog · 01/07/2019 21:45

Horrible comment from a terf. Shocker

Do any of them ppl live in the real world at all if a horrible comment from a terf rocks their world so much.
Jeez.
They have no fucking idea how 99% of the population live. No fucking scooby

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 01/07/2019 21:47

I am truly shocked
Why?

I can't quite grasp why people are shocked that something being pushed from the top down is being preached by the top downward, it's like the suprise that grants are coming from Scottish parliament.

failingatlife · 01/07/2019 21:50

I'm on that threadGrin Nuclear Sarah is a rocket!

2BthatUnnoticed · 01/07/2019 21:50

Thank you to Tony Angel. Sincerely, thank you for speaking up. And to everyone speaking up.

I have a niece who loves astronomy. To see women as a sex class treated in this dismissive, contemptuous way breaks my heart.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 01/07/2019 21:51

I've engaged on threads calling RAS_Diversity out for the slur today. I also Tweeted the Royal Soc main account directly, pointing out that T*RF is a slur. I said a Scottish politician who used it was suspended. I also linked them to the terfisaslur.com website.

MilletSentToForceIt · 01/07/2019 22:03

From their website;

The RAS is committed to creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone is treated fairly, regardless of gender, disability, ethnic origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marital status, age, or nationality.

Maybe a few of us could email them to tell them this is incorrect?

FemaleAndLearning · 01/07/2019 22:05

Yes I assume someone brought up that women only grants should just be that.

Captain Kirk
Shocked as I am still quite new to this debate and just find it incredible that an institution finds this acceptable to tweet.
I guess I am not normalised to all this stuff yet despite not being able to get out of the rabbit hole.

I was hoping that this was a joke.

Novina · 01/07/2019 22:12

This was retweeted by Pride in STEM, who I'm keeping an eye on at the moment.

My thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3624083-Has-anyone-heard-of-this-organisation-charity

Their twitter:
mobile.twitter.com/PrideinSTEM

But they explained back in december that t*rf is not a slur, merely a descriptive acronym, so that's ok then. Hmm

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 01/07/2019 22:12

All of these organisations that have nothing to do with identity politics are starting to look deranged with their TWAW mantra.

DpWm · 01/07/2019 22:12

This is really upsetting

donquixotedelamancha · 01/07/2019 22:14

The RAS code of conduct is here:

ras.ac.uk/membership/membership-fellows/code-conduct

Members must at all times refrain from actions or statements towards Members, prospective Members, staff and visitors that might be construed as discrimination on the basis of their sex

Harassment, victimisation and bullying are prohibited. Harassment is unwanted conduct that has the purpose or effect of violating someone's dignity, or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for them.

Formal allegations of breaching the code of conduct should be made to the executive director Philip Diamond, who can be contacted here:

ras.ac.uk/user/37/contact

When I get a little time I will be researching the issue and putting in a formal allegation under the code. Please can I beg other users to do the same. This cannot stand.

ArcheryAnnie · 01/07/2019 22:21

The twitter biog lists the three people who tweet from the RASDiversity account. At least one of them is retweeting prolifically from various accounts that explicitly call to silence dissent and specifically silence women.

Fucksake. RASDiversity used to be the RAS Women account. But it now apparently hates women, unless they are a) transwomen, or b) actual women, as long as those actual women are prepared to go to the back of the queue, their natural place in the world of science.

I depair.

Mermoose · 01/07/2019 22:33

When we're dealing with a crisis of trust in experts among the public, do you know what's a really GREAT idea? For your scientific organisation to push the single most batshit dogma in recent times and start screaming the new word for 'heretic'. Well done RAS. You muppets.

FannyCann · 01/07/2019 22:40

Where is the irony alert?

Royal Astronomical Society calls out TERFs
TheInebriati · 01/07/2019 22:40

If you are on Twitter remember to report every instance of 'terf' as the hate speech it is.

OldCrone · 01/07/2019 23:07

"13% of women have skipped professional events due to feeling unsafe."

Royal Astronomical Society calls out TERFs
ArcheryAnnie · 01/07/2019 23:12

Fucking hell. I've been to public women in astronomy events there (which were great!) I fucking wouldn't go now, as I would absolutely feel unsafe. Well done, RAS. You could only stomach a hundred years of admitting women into your ranks before you realised it was all a TERRIBLE MISTAKE and you should go back to making sure they felt entirely unwelcome, and prioritising men instead.

Gingerkittykat · 01/07/2019 23:23

What is their definition of trans woman who can apply for the women only funding?

Is it transwomen with a GRC? Is it anyone with a male body who feels like calling themselves a woman?

OccasionalKite · 01/07/2019 23:31

Another organisational capture job, it appears.

And another example of a link R0wantrees has posted to articles (sorry, I can't find atm, but there's a bit about naive people being used by narcs as flying monkeys, to attack). The flying monkeys have no awareness that they are being used - they are just obeying the training they've been given, by the regulatory predators that are knocking about at the moment.

breakfastpizza · 01/07/2019 23:42

A diversity platform for a science-based organisation openly (gleefully?) using a slur to demean a protected class.

Takes a lot to stun me these days, but this is some parallel universe shit.
