Glad the papers are reporting on this.

And where is Penny Mordaunt’s promised research into the causes of this?

And where is Penny Mordaunt’s promised research into the causes of this?

It has to be coming up to a year since she announced the research, but I don't know the planned time frame.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/06/2019 20:49

Heartbreaking, these girls are not boys but we have created a climate where we are unable to help them as that is deemed transphobic.

MacaroonMama · 29/06/2019 21:22

Does anybody have a share token for this please?

Thank you Gasp 😘

Great reporting - keep holding the Government to account about the lack of research and action on this. The age and sex of referrals must start causing concern. A 3 year old for god’s sake.

boatyardblues · 29/06/2019 22:17

The sharetoken isn’t working for me. Does anyone have another?

boatyardblues · 29/06/2019 22:56

Thanks Rabbit!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 29/06/2019 23:15

The youngest patients were three? Fucking three? That's made me feel quite sick. Actually nauseous. It's grotesque to think of a child that age having any sort of gender awareness, FFS.

It's like the toddler on the 4th Wave Now blog whose parents decided he was really a girl because he kept unpopping his babygro. They interpreted this as meaning he wanted to wear a dress, ignoring the fact that girl toddlers also wear babygros.

Another powerful article by Andrew Gilligan. More truly shocking reporting that's I'm happy to think is being read by the influential people who read the Times. Because I don't think most readers will be anything but appalled.

nettie434 · 29/06/2019 23:21

Thanks for sharetoken searabbit. I was really struck by the huge difference in referrals for boys and girls. The number of boys referred was the same as last year so the rise in referrals was entirely due to the increase in referrals for girls. Obviously I did know about the rise in the number of girls wanting to transition because of this board but did not realise the scale.

Thingybob · 29/06/2019 23:21

I was slightly confused by the figures until I realised that many 17 year olds are no longer counted. So about 2500 children (0-16) are referred and about 3/4 are girls.

If that figure is constant year on year (it doesn't show signs of decreasing) my rough, back of a fag packet calculation is that

1 in every 200 girls in the UK will be referred to GIDS before they are 17

Yet the powers that be don't consider this an epidemic?

I'd be grateful if anyone fancies checking that calculation
UK population approx 66 million
19% 16 or under
Half girls
17 years between birth and 17th birthday

frazzled1 · 29/06/2019 23:28

Crowd funder for 'top surgery in 5 days', a 20 year old FFS. Heartbreaking.

Oh no that is very worrying. Younger and less able to think for themselves what might be underlying their dysphoria or what they are trying to escape by adopting a new identity.

Bluerussian · 30/06/2019 00:52

There should be no such clinic, in my opinion. It's horrifying to think of young children going through gender reassignment. If they waited until they were adult, they might change their minds.

I despair at the medical staff who are prepared to carry out treatment and procedures - are they experimenting on kids with government sanction?

HandsOffMyRights · 30/06/2019 07:50

Thanks for the share.
The figures are disturbing. That 1 in every 200 really hammers it home.

I remember seeing on Twitter a chart showing the difference between boys snd girls year on year - the gulf is starling.

Where is the investigation, Penny?

Thanks Andrew if you're reading this. Another powerful piece. Keep on unearthing what they're burying from us.

HandsOffMyRights · 30/06/2019 07:51

startling not starling!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 30/06/2019 08:03

As autocorrect fails go, that's a particularly charming one HandsOffMyRights. Smile

I like starlings.

LizziesTwin · 30/06/2019 08:23

1 in 200 is really frightening. Poor girls.

Payfrozen · 30/06/2019 08:35

Thingybob I think the proportion may be even higher than you fear as you have used UK population but from the article:

"Gids said the age and sex figures were for English patients only,"

Chickenish · 30/06/2019 08:42

I went into Foyle’s yesterday. At the entrance to the children’s section was a book about gender identity aimed at 3+. Which, if I remember rightly, means that only very young children will read it/have it read to them.

The book said that adults guess your gender by looking at you when you are born, but if you like ‘these things’ you can see what you are really.

FamilyOfAliens · 30/06/2019 08:47

Why do trans-identified females use the euphemistic term “top surgery” rather than the medically accurate “double mastectomy”, I wonder?

Carowiththegoodhair · 30/06/2019 08:53

Surge in girls wanting drastic surgery to mutilate their bodies.

Thingybob · 30/06/2019 09:00

Thank-you for that Payfrozen, it's scary to realise I underestimated

Also am I correct in thinking we don't have published figures for all the 17/18/19+ year olds being treated on the NHS? I'm guessing that if we did the figure would be closer to 1 in 100 girls!
