GRA discussion yesterday in parliament

Noticed this from a labour MP (not mine), Lilian Greenwood:

I was delighted to chair a really thought-provoking discussion about the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) in Parliament yesterday.

I was grateful to have the chance to listen to Dr Katharine Jenkins from University of Nottingham present her research on how the GRA should be updated.

Many thanks to Dr Nina Burrowes from The Consent Collective, Mridul Wadhwa from YWCA Scotland - The Young Women's Movement, Dr Ruth Pearce from University of Leeds, and the audience for their excellent contributions.

Does anyone know the contributors, and if so would it have been a balanced discussion?

Mridul Wadhwa from YWCA Scotland - The Young Women's Movement

Joan McAlpine response to a senior person (who is a male transperson) in VAW Scottish sector (manager of a rape crisis centre):

There was recent discussion about Mridul Wadhwa's comments & role in women's services in a short film.

Quick google shows:

Nina Burrowes - no problem with men in women's spaces ever. Because women have to be nice. Patron of Edinburgh's Rape Crisis centre. Pro self-ID.

Katharine Jenkins - women can have penises. Academic. Pro self-ID.

Mridul Wadhwa - biological male who heads up a women's rape crisis centre in Scotland. Pro self-ID.

Ruth Pearce. gender bollocks. Academic. Pro self-ID.

InsulatedCup · 25/06/2019 19:05

Oh so not very balanced then. What is the point of that if everyone thinks the same?

Ruth Pearce describes herself as a "trans-feminist". Which I suspect means she is not overly concerned about the protection of single sex spaces. She seems to have a research grant to look at male pregnancy in a project with Sally Hines.

The MP seems to have met lobbyists for GRA reform. Maybe they might like to meet some GC feminists for balance.

Have just searched They Work For You and nothing of Gender Recognition Act comes up for yesterday.

Was it one of the Committees and if so which one?

Thanks

Popchyk · 25/06/2019 19:14

Ruth Pearce tweeted:

twitter.com/NotRightRuth/status/1143531875736141824

"Yesterday we launched a briefing on the importance of self-determination in gender recognition law, co-authored by @drkjenkins and I. It should be available online soon.

"As @LilianGreenwood noted, it was great to have an all-woman panel in a traditionally male environment".

So important to have all-women panels, eh?

stumbledin · 25/06/2019 19:37

Okay - just from the look of a picture of the event it looks like a book launch taking place in one of the committee rooms.

But on Katharine Jenkins University home page on mention of new research or recommendations.

HollowTalk · 25/06/2019 19:43

Mridul Wadhwa - biological male who heads up a women's rape crisis centre in Scotland. Pro self-ID

I wish I couldn't believe this was true.

mirandayardley · 25/06/2019 19:59

Tweeting in the days after the assault on Maria Maclachlan at Speakers’ Corner, Ruth Pearce showed the world what ma’am thinks of women.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 25/06/2019 20:03

Well whoever Ruth Pearce is she blocks me, never interacted with her in my life. Something tells me that wan't a balanced debate.

PencilsInSpace · 25/06/2019 20:06

TRA lobbying session. There won't be a transcript.

Ruth Pearce is trans.

PencilsInSpace · 25/06/2019 20:09

I think any MP can book a room and host a 'thought-provoking discussion'.

N0Time · 25/06/2019 20:12

FFS!! I thought this might’ve been good news Sad

InsulatedCup · 25/06/2019 20:12

I wonder who else attended apart from the panel?

OP posts:
Pota2 · 25/06/2019 20:13

Ruth Pearce is a trans woman. She is the protégée of Sally Hines and worked on the Trans Pregnancy project. She seems nice as a person but she is utterly unable to see that there is any debate to be had.

OrchidInTheSun · 25/06/2019 20:16

Pearce works with Sally Hines at Leeds. Is researching trans pregnancy

PencilsInSpace · 25/06/2019 20:18

She seems nice as a person

Really?

Pota2 · 25/06/2019 20:18

Katharine Jenkins wrote some nonsensical smear piece on Kathleen Stock a while back. Such a lack of balance on that panel.

Juells · 25/06/2019 20:18

Ruth Pearce is trans.

Would never have guessed that from the voice.

Popchyk · 25/06/2019 20:19

Didn't know that Pearce was trans.

So the much lauded all-women panel was 20% male.

So much for the tiny minority.

Pota2 · 25/06/2019 20:21

Mirdul Wadwha is also trans so 40%

Pota2 · 25/06/2019 20:22

Well I have met her at a conference and she seemed quite nice but clearly not prepared to even listen to the other side of this.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/06/2019 20:25

"it was great to have an all-woman panel in a traditionally male environment".

Two out of five panellists biologically male, including the one who tweeted the above sentence. Hmm

Popchyk · 25/06/2019 20:26

"Mirdul Wadwha is also trans so 40%".

Ta, Pota. Meant to say 40%.

Wonder if there has ever been an all-man panel that features 40% females. In the history of the universe.

I am gonna say no.

PencilsInSpace · 25/06/2019 20:27

Mirdul Wadwha - that's the tw running a women's rape crisis centre who sat at the back sneering when Meghan Murphy spoke at the Scottish Parliament.
