I can’t tell you how utterly disappointed I feel by her comments about Sex and reproduction not being binary. She knows the truth, what the hell is she doing? I’m even more upset by her than by Sarah Champion, she’s a Scientist ffs.

Urrgh, I thought Alice might have gone away and looked into these issues affecting Women but No.
Her own self interest is obviously far more important than the rights of Women to have Female only spaces and Sports.

Supreme self confidence exhibited by Alice here. No reflection or reference to facts needed, just total self belief. No engagement with the argument and a willingness to dismiss women as silly bigots.

Sign of the times. Alice is riding the wave and many others are crowding in too.

Go well Alice, but I won’t be joining you in the wipeout.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/09/2019 19:44

Alice is enormously unkind in her approach to this.
She is trying to claim the moral high ground but you can't do that by being nice to one group and ignoring the rights of the others. And once you start crying bigot and amplifying the voices of those who call for violence, you are part of the problem, not the solution.
She needs to do some serious self reflection.

I agree in some ways - but sport is a special and very difficult case, and I think any decisions made about participation in that arena should not be extended to the rest of society. @HPS_Vanessa writes about this here: t.co/j8ka1tIQXH

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 05/11/2019 06:07

It appears she's now using the 'but clownfish' argument.

Alice Roberts - what the hell?
Igneococcus · 05/11/2019 06:20

It's about 390 Million years ago that we tetrapods split from the fishes. That's a lot of time to evolve wonderfully and messily into something quite different to a clown fish, like into a species where sex us immutable and a species with the intelligence to know this.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 05/11/2019 06:37

a species with the intelligence to know this.
we're evidently a few million years short!!

MrsJamin · 05/11/2019 07:29

I used to adore her documentaries. She's such a disappointment to feminists and scientists 😔

MrsBertBibby · 05/11/2019 08:04

My other half has been very defensive of AR, but last night, she peaked him good and proper.

Justhadathought · 05/11/2019 08:09

Wait until she has a baby. She'll know what being female means then.

Honestly think that for many younger, contemporary women, who have breezed through school, gone on to university, and don't/yet have children, they have yet to encounter anything much in which being female has mattered.

Justhadathought · 05/11/2019 08:10

O.k - so she's not that young...but the point still stands.

Justhadathought · 05/11/2019 08:13

O.K - she also has children.......there's simply no excuse then.....haha!

BadgertheBodger · 05/11/2019 08:13

I’m ridiculously cross with Alice Roberts. It shouldn’t matter to me so much but I used to think she was fab, and to see a MEDICAL DOCTOR AND ANTHROPOLOGIST wilfully misrepresenting facts is infuriating. She knows all about humans being a binary sex, of course she does. She has just chosen to be woke instead.

MrsBertBibby · 05/11/2019 08:14

Splendid work

Alice Roberts - what the hell?
BadgertheBodger · 05/11/2019 08:15

MrsBert Grin

DickKerrLadies · 05/11/2019 08:15

She's seriously using the clownfish argument?

Wow.

RoyalCorgi · 05/11/2019 08:18

The clownfish argument is generally used by people who are totally clueless about biology. I wonder if she realises how foolish it makes her seem?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/11/2019 08:20

It's so utterly irrelevant to humans, it makes her come across as either dim or dishonest.
I never thought she was either. This is so sad.

MrsBertBibby · 05/11/2019 08:20

Thing is, it is bloody terrifying being GC in academe. I know a fair few who are really genuinely in fear for their entire career if they get outed as GC.

But he could see so clearly, she KNOWS this is bollocks, and yet she says it. She lies. That's not just smiling and nodding and being careful what you say to whom.

Driechdrizzle · 05/11/2019 08:22

Clownfish, PhD. That’s made my day.

nauticant · 05/11/2019 08:33

This to me is the problem with what Roberts is doing to score woke points:

BeMoreMagdalen · 05/11/2019 08:48

You know you really have entered the Twilight Zone when respected scientists are using popular gotcha arguments they found on Twitter.

I eagerly await being asked to consider how I would feel if I woke up one morning in a blokes body because we had both wished really hard at the exact same moment.

Driechdrizzle · 05/11/2019 09:03

Somebody has suggested that bringing up clownfish in a discussion about the immutability of sex should be called Nemo’s law.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 05/11/2019 09:08

I like "Nemo's Law".
As for Alice Roberts using the clownfish argument.....don't know what to say really.

Grimbles · 05/11/2019 09:34

Maybe the retort to 'but clownfish' should be "get in the sea and see how well you breathe underwater, because clownfish'
