Mermaids on twitter

Has mermaids closed their twitter account or been suspended? I can't find it and I definitely haven't been blocked.

I'm wondering whether the whole Phoebe Waller-Bridge has forced them to be quiet for a bit?

Thank you Red for putting my feelings into words!

LizzieSiddal · 23/05/2019 08:12

FWB was saying exactly the opposite to what Mermaids would like her to say, but they manage to twist her words. Yet again reality, they present to children, is distorted.

They are a fucking disgrace.

ChattyLion · 23/05/2019 08:17

Thank you Red

LizzieSiddal · 23/05/2019 08:20

Sorry only just been able to read the full Mermaids thread.
Does that young person realise that once Mermaids get involved, the chances of someone “changing their minds”, is very small. They don’t subscribe at all to “watch and wait”.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/05/2019 08:23

Just flipping through the thread. That as is spectacularly dumb ‘am I a boy or a girl - maybe I’m neither?’. Sex is generally pretty obvious. Are they trying to recruit babies now? How does that work?

Maybe it should have been ‘am I girly or boyish? Who gives a flying fuck? Oi, looneys, leave them kids alone!’

ChattyLion · 23/05/2019 08:30

Agree PWB is saying the exact opposite of what the Mermaids approach would be.

Perhaps PWB could ask (like we are all doing) what the evidence is that distressed young women benefit more from the medical, hormonal and surgical life long effects than they do from talking therapies alone at the time that they present for help?

What it is evidence that invasive physical transition resolves their dysphoria at all and resolves the other co-existing mental and physical problems that they may have (including all the problems brought on by transition itself).

If there is evidence to make social and physical ‘transition’ more effective than talking therapies alone, what is the evidence that the benefit holds up over time?

Because otherwise we shouldn’t be offering permanent invasive radically life altering interventions to kids. If we have any doubts whatsoever.

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2019 08:35

Re, the baby advert.

If you want a more obvious sign that it's not about children at all, but recruiting parents than that advert says it loud and clear.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 23/05/2019 08:51

Talk to an actual gender therapist and they'll tell you about the difference between brains and everything else

🤣😂🤣🤣😂. I am sure they will! 😂🤣🤣😂

Scientists on the other hand....

LizzieSiddal · 23/05/2019 08:57

You are correct Red.

The baby advert is grooming parents.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/05/2019 09:28

Gender therapist - explain the qualifications for this? Will they have studied and physiology at all or just jelly babies?

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2019 09:29

Its a commerical advertising and marketing strategy. Not raising awareness.

Its not even subtle.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 23/05/2019 10:24

I suppose the word 'amazing' can mean whatever mermaids want it to though.

They identify as amazing. How dare you gatekeep being amazing, they have a genuine internal ambience that totally inspires wonder*

*wonder wtf they've been smoking...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/05/2019 10:32

I’m pretty amazing.

beenandgoneandbackagain · 23/05/2019 10:40

As a femme-presenting gay transman I think Mumsnet is lovely and very validating. Confused

I like my gender fluid to be red, made of grapes, and matured in cellars for a few years Wine Grin

OhHolyJesus · 23/05/2019 10:53

Sorry to derail slightly...Does anyone have a pic of the Mermaids stand that had puppies and sweets? I'm sure I heard about that on MN, or did I dream (nightmare) this?

Genderfreelass · 23/05/2019 11:10

Great post red

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/05/2019 11:44

OhHolyJesus · 23/05/2019 13:00

Thanks Old knew someone would have it! Using it to peak trans someone so you have shared for a good purpose!

parpsqueak · 23/05/2019 16:55

this is absolutely fucking outrageous! Who in their right mind would think that is OK?!

has anyone seen if PWB has responded at all?

Genderfreelass · 23/05/2019 18:05

So mermaids still using PWB on their blog including a photo!

From the blog, "...Mermaids is just about allowing me to find out who I amnowand worry about tomorrow...tomorrow."

Find out who you are now, go on blockers that endocrinologists have said impact brain development as well as physical development so are not able to make an informed choice before going on cross sex hormones and then surgery. Tomorrow needs to be considered today before the permanent effects of drugs and surgery.

Floisme · 23/05/2019 18:12

I wonder if they're trying to smoke PWB out. I think she's a bit too clever for that myself - if she does want to say more, she'll do it when she's ready.

GrumpyGran8 · 23/05/2019 21:07

Anyway, I had some really good Viennese biscuits from Waitrose this week. I ate the whole packet in one day and now I cannot stop thinking about them.
Bother! that's reminded me that I forgot to buy biscuits this week. Never mind, I think there's some old chocolate digestives mouldering at the bottom of the biscuit barrel...
BRB!
