I don't know why I'm surprised that this monstrosity is not in the slightest bit ashamed of himself but Jesus suffering Christ, how the hell can this be excused as "satire" and "humour". Benjamin’s remarks would be unacceptable "down the pub", on Twitter or at the hustings. Rape jokes are never funny. No exceptions.

Cake time, people.
Not a baker myself, only a consumer, but if anyone's got fool proof recipes for beginners, I'm all ears

GammonNosher · 11/05/2019 13:33

It's mad how when Cake covered I Will Survive they added a swear. Horrible.

Juggling80plates · 11/05/2019 15:56

GN dear, you've been made. I'm sure you've got other places to be.

Juggling80plates · 11/05/2019 16:01

This week in stupid, Carl Benjamin gets his YouTube channel demonetised (Times).
only got himself to blame.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/05/2019 16:02

What does that mean?

Juggling80plates · 11/05/2019 16:02

Just joined MN after lurking for a while. Feisty discourse. Good work.

Juggling80plates · 11/05/2019 16:12

Not sure - Were you asking what 'this week in stupid' meant?
Ref to title of Carl's YouTube weekly roundup title.
I thought it was stupid that someone who relies on YouTube revenue and understands full well the difference between free speech and hate speech made nasty personal attack and got demonetised.
Thought it ironic.

YouTube Has Downgraded Carl Benjamin's Sargon Of Akkad Account After He Talked About Raping A British MP
YouTube confirmed to BuzzFeed News that UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin — known online as Sargon of Akkad — has been suspended from the company's partner programme.

Copied from Mark Di Stefano's Buzzfeed article.

Hi, we've deleted a number of personal attacks on this thread. Can we please ask that you stick to our Talk Guidelines when posting please? Otherwise we'll need to remove this thread as it's already starting to become unreadable due to the deleted posts. Thanks all.

FermatsTheorem · 11/05/2019 18:56

@ClaraMumsnet

That seems like a rather heavy-handed message! There have been 4 deletions out of 66 posts, 3 of them of one poster who was quite obviously not in good faith (and not just this thread), one of someone who presumably responded a bit too heatedly to those deliberately inflammatory posts.

That looks like a situation admirably dealt with by a small handful of deletions, not a thread that's "starting to become unreadable due to the deleted posts."

Please be mindful of the fact that people troll these boards deliberately with the express intention of getting threads deleted/posters banned, and try to keep to a relatively light-handed moderation technique.

This is a really important issue for women to be able to discuss openly: the fact that a man who has issued online rape threats to a female MP is considered a reasonable candidate for election to the office of MEP by a major (if somewhat unsavoury) political party. You cannot fall into the trap of allowing deliberate agents provocateurs to shut down this debate.

GammonNosher · 11/05/2019 20:22

It is outrageous that there might be folks supporting Carl Benjamin in here for sure and it's worth keeping an eye on. I'd like to apologise for my responses but please note that the first personal attack to take place was aimed directly at me, and for daring to suggest that feminism isn't over and still has work to do no less.

Thanks for engaging directly Clara. Fermats please don't respond to mod action by fanning flames and taking sides. It would be best to treat the discussion as concluded.

Juggling80plates · 11/05/2019 20:23

I wasn't trying to personally attack anyone.
I had been following some feminist threads since reading about Maya Forstater in the Times last week and getting very upset by the idea of my 9yo daughter having to deal with nefarious men in changing rooms etc. I got quite worked up about it all. Mumsnet seemed to be one of the only places that had a robust discourse about this and other topics - such as the Jess Phillips case.
I read the news item in the Times today on the demonetisation of Sargon's account and thought that it would be worth posting here because it shows that threatening female MPs to court controversy when you're an internet pundit with 1m subscribers may lose you your revenue so a salutatory lesson.
I don't think Carl Benjamin is in the least bit stupid and I would rather he'd not made threatening 'jokes' and kept his channel going and support his family. His behaviour with regard to Jess Phillips has been stupid and as he calls his weekly topic slot 'this week in stupid' so that's all I was referring to.

Super callous fragile racist sexist UKIP a*hole”: Carl Benjamin visits Truro
Great Woman's placard and headline
Speaking to the Anchor, two of the peaceful protestors, who wished to be referred to as “local female protestors” questioned “how low UKIP will go” to select a candidate who, in their view, “thinks rape is a joke

I agree with much of what you said, FermatsTheorem.

As an aside, although I agree deletion is sometimes right, one downside of deletions is that goady posts vanish from the record, allowing the goader to avoid being judged from their posts.

They can even re-write history if they so choose.

GammonNosher · 12/05/2019 17:08

I ran into that very problem Perking but the most workable choice still seems to be to just accept that I overreacted.... feels a lot like talking to certain types of blokes to be punished for responding appropriately to an insult but responsibility has to lie with the goaded for their own actions really.

FermatsTheorem · 12/05/2019 18:59

Yes, this is often the case, Perking, especially when the responses disappear too, and it becomes unclear to people coming to the thread later who was the aggressor in the incident. Grey rock is the way forward, as ever.

PerkingFaintly · 12/05/2019 21:56

As you say, Fermat.
