Green Sheffield Councillor puts the Party in a spin with gender critical statement

When Peter Garbutt said that trans people could not change their DNA and that it was scientifically impossible for a man to become a woman and vice versa, a party spokesperson replied that green LBGT people wouldn't vote for him.

When he said that the trans rights campaign risked women's rights, was aggressive and less than democratic, the spokesperson said that he had done "untold damage".

He won the seat comfortably.

The Green party source said: we have the most pro-trans policy of any party. It’s just a shame that sometimes it doesn’t leak through to an individual level. It really isn’t the view of the Green Party and it doesn’t reflect the Green Party ethos.

Good luck Councillor Garbutt and thank you for ignoring the party line.

Presumably the Green Party get annoyed with people who ignore all scientific evidence for climate change? Goalposts change though when it comes to a clash between reality and men's feelings

GCAcademic · 05/05/2019 11:24

a Green party source said Coun Garbutt’s comments had caused “untold damage” to the party’s reputation

No, what damages the party’s reputation is taking an anti-scientific position. If you want to convince people of the need for green policies, which will inevitably require individuals to make lifestyle and financial sacrifices, then your scientific credibility needs to be unassailable.

CannyLad · 05/05/2019 11:31

Just guessing but does the party spokesperson identify with one of the LGBT groups?

Is it hard to be objective sometimes but very important when you're a spokesperson not to let your own opinions cloud your judgement...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/05/2019 11:36

Cloud your judgement?

That was politicking, aimed at undermining a candidate... weird behaviour, at best.

MrsSnippyPants · 05/05/2019 11:39

I would have voted for our Green Party candidate if he had been as clear as Councillor Garbutt. Unfortunately, he just responded to my questions on this issue with a big old word salad about vulnerable people. And he wasn't talking about women.

RedHoodGirl · 05/05/2019 13:20

I suspect he won the seat because of people’s recent increased awareness of green issues following the extinction rebellion protests (coupled with disallusionment with Labour / Tory party) rather than his GC views?

It’d be interesting to know if the count would have been affected if voters had known?

MockerstheFeManist · 05/05/2019 13:23

Far too many activist Greenies would prefer a candidate who said the 'right' things and lost, rather than one who said the wrong things and won.

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/05/2019 19:18

There is a big group of undercover gender critical greens. A relative is one of them. The GC greens are being hauled over hot coals. I think there will be changes in the future like this.

RuffleCrow · 05/05/2019 19:20

Well done that man. Star
Hopefully more will follow suit.

thirdfiddle · 05/05/2019 22:34

Is that Sheffield? I think there is a local issue where people are furious with the council about tree felling. That might explain a surge of support for Greens.

Great to hear of a GC group within the party though and great this chap felt able to speak up. Really hope leadership will start to listen properly to the issues. I'd love to be able to vote for them next general election, I like their approach on many issues but their blind support of the TRA line is currently a sticking point.

HumberElla · 05/05/2019 22:50

I really really want to support the Greens and I would love to see them as the party supporting science, environmental sustainability and diversity. I just hope this undercover GC crowd make themselves known soon. I absolutely cannot believe in a party that wants to save the planet but condemns science and denies material reality.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/05/2019 22:50

I'd like to be able to vote Green.

HandsOffMyRights · 05/05/2019 22:56

Absolutely. It is the likes of the Challenors who have caused "untold damage."

FloralBunting · 05/05/2019 23:04

Such a headfuck, isnt it? Person who knows how to distinguish between the two sexes and says you can't change sex is causing untold damage.

Paedophile rapist, and enabling family members are not really even mildly troubling.

Yeah, I'll vote green when they rejoin the land of the people with decent moral standards, ta.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 06/05/2019 07:37

Yes, sorry, that's what I meant. If they acknowledged the Challenor issue and took steps to fix safeguarding, and got real with the science of sex. Daft that such an important issue party (environment) gets hijacked and derailed by a tiny lobby group.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/05/2019 07:47

I couldn't vote green. I might want to but I absolutely can't because of this.

I don't know this guy but suspect he's one of the GC greens.

GC greens complained and reported many things relating to the Challenor case and have been and are still being silenced. Some have left, some are working behind scenes to change things.

The problem is that this is a party that young voters who care about the planet will vote for. Extinction rebellion will and is definitely have/ing an impact. They will gain more seats. GC greens within the party must try to fight to turn the party around regarding its appalling approach to women and safeguarding.

The Deep Green Resistance appear to know their biology. Not a political party but certainly something more green people will find.

One thing that's been bothering me is that since increasing evidence of compounds such as cocaine are being found in aquatic animals, surely the hormones trans people take make their way to the environment too. What would Blockers do? How do greens level up with that? Unfortunately I know it's also an issue with oral contraception, however this should be a right for women to stop unwanted pregnancies, (and other menstrual conditions) some of which could be due to abuse by men.

WomanInBoots · 06/05/2019 08:02

I'd love to be able to vote Green again. I'm glad there are some GC people in the Green Party. They need to have a rethink about whether they are going to choose to be consistently scientific across the board though. That includes trans issues.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/05/2019 08:14

I hadn't seen this before - I googled to see if there was an 'out' group.

gendercriticalgreens.wordpress.com/

I do know they are being witch hunted and silenced.

I'd like to think the same was happening in labour and Lib Dem's. Who knows. As yet I'm personally still politically homeless. If anyone, I usually vote Lib Dem for education policies, though I would vote labour if they reinstated their last primary curriculum that the Tories shelved.

Notagainnow · 06/05/2019 08:26

I live here. I voted for him. To be honest I’d no idea he was gc , nice bonus though :) It’s always been close between green and labour here but as someone further up said I am furious about the trees which is the main reason i votes green.

EverardDigby · 06/05/2019 08:36

I know the GP is in a mess but it is really helpful if you know there's a GC GP candidate to vote for them as it gives strength within the party to fight this - Peter was openly GC but still won, which helps to dispel the myth that it's a vote loser. It's not going to change overnight, but supporting people who are working on it can only help even though the actions of the main party have been crap over this.

RuffleCrow · 06/05/2019 08:50

I agree womaninboots.

Their scientific credibility is in tatters.

Sadly most of the GC Greens I know have either left (like me) or are silenced by The Woke.

R0wantrees · 06/05/2019 17:27

I'd like to think the same was happening in labour and Lib Dem's. Who knows

There's a group of GC LibDem women.
Think they can be found on Twitter

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2019 10:34

Thanks R0 I didn't know this.

This website finds more GC voices in all the other parties than the Lib Dem's which is very difficult as if I want to vote tactically for meps it's Lib Dem.

www.peaktrans.org/gender-criticism-across-the-political-spectrum/

The greens in my area standing for MEP I categorically know are very GC (we are in a secret GC group.)

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2019 10:35

(Tactically for Brexit)
