Green Sheffield Councillor puts the Party in a spin with gender critical statement

When Peter Garbutt said that trans people could not change their DNA and that it was scientifically impossible for a man to become a woman and vice versa, a party spokesperson replied that green LBGT people wouldn't vote for him.

When he said that the trans rights campaign risked women's rights, was aggressive and less than democratic, the spokesperson said that he had done "untold damage".

He won the seat comfortably.

The Green party source said: we have the most pro-trans policy of any party. It’s just a shame that sometimes it doesn’t leak through to an individual level. It really isn’t the view of the Green Party and it doesn’t reflect the Green Party ethos.

Good luck Councillor Garbutt and thank you for ignoring the party line.

Are you sure R0 as I can't find them?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 10/05/2019 11:32

Useful links, thanks Euro. I think Joanna Cherry should prob be added to the SNP page. And I am now happier about voting SNP in May.

Can anyone tell me whether the Green party is still using the tern 'non-men' in any of its current literature or documentation?

With the Euro elections coming up I'm needing to know whether this is still the case, as I'm considering voting Green. If it is still the case, I need to be on firm ground when explaining to party activists why I'll not ever be voting Green until this is changed.

How many pissed of bandwagoners wouldn’t vote for him (assuming they would have bothered in the first place) Vs how many women would positively vote for him.

I still don’t trust the Greens.

Evening all

Just stopping by to gently revive this recent thread.

If you have some time, I know for sure that Cllr Garbutt would be most heartened to hear from more GC voices. As we know, standing up to these TRA tyrants is not pleasant and he is getting the expected flak for it.

Your support would mean the world to him and his family.

There's a group of GC LibDem women.
Think they can be found on Twitter
Any idea where I can find them?

Why does the Green party have a 'pro trans ethos', or indeed be a left wing party? I wish they would be a solely environmental party and not also get involved in politics unrelated to the environment. It drives away potential voters who are right wing, or gender critical, and others.

They are not about to form a government so they don't need to have a position on everything. At a time when we have only 10 years to avert severe climate change, it's nuts that the Green Party is getting in a spat about trans issues, and trying to distance themselves from a successful Green candidate.

Glad he has won. There has been an outcry in Sheffield about the council chopping down lots of healthy trees to save cash maintaining them, that has probably helped him.

Although I think it suggests that your average voter isn't as clear on trans issues as the trans lobby would have you believe. Most people haven't thought about it very much, but probably wouldn't disagree with anything he says.

I liked it better as the Ecology Party. It supposed a whole ethos, rather than just an environmental pressure group.
