Female soldier attacked in barracks *trigger alert, sexual assault*

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 07/04/2019 11:15

I cant find the reports from the BBC website, these are from The Sun;

www.thesun.co.uk/news/8806406/squaddie-rape-soldiers-sex-attack-sleep-girl/

www.thesun.co.uk/news/8802897/six-soldiers-held-in-sex-attack-quiz/

A 17 year old female soldier woke to find 7 men standing around her bed. 6 have been arrested and one has been charged with rape.

And apparently, ''Lincolnshire Police are investigating the latest sexual assault allegation against a soldier.''

I read this earlier. Absolutely horrific.

GerryblewuptheER · 07/04/2019 11:44

I'm disturbed at the coke and alcohol consumption being brought up.

Makes me think they are trying to make out that she just doesn't remember consenting as she was too drunk. Or that they were too drunk.or high to know what they are doing.

How awful for that poor victim. It's horrific:(

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/04/2019 12:18

The swift and resolute statement and video put out by the CinC(?) makes it clear that this will not be brushed under any carpet.

God help any judge who makes a stupid 'ah well!' comment on this one!

MenuPlant · 07/04/2019 12:20

I always imagined - and have read many reports over the years to make it seem likely - that sexual abuse of women and men in these services is not uncommon.

I imagine this one has been followed up as it's so extreme?

MockerstheFeManist · 07/04/2019 13:17

It's worse than that:

The victim was a 17 year old recruit, who are officially not soldiers but trainees.

And one perpetrator was a staff sargeant, for whom the glasshouse awaits.

OvaHere · 07/04/2019 13:34

Just horrendous. I hope this is treated with the severity it deserves.

Popchyk · 07/04/2019 13:36

I imagine that it is being followed up because these men filmed the assault, and at least one of them subsequently sent the footage to others.

And the army is making very stern noises because there is undeniable proof of the attack.

"She is said to have shrieked at realising what had happened". That bit sounds like someone watched her reaction on a screen as she woke up, rather than her own account of what happened.

Just speculation on my part.

Sexnotgender · 07/04/2019 13:37

what the actual fuck is wrong with men.

Yes, I thought the first impression given was that she was at the party and had taken drugs.

It seems to have triggered a govt inquiry;

''Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson was so “appalled” that yesterday he launched a review into bullying and harassment throughout the forces.''

Sexual Abuse was at the heart of the Deepcut Scandal, with female recruits pressured into sex with their instructors as a condition of passing out.

Deepcut was a dustbin of all the bad soldiers no fighting unit wanted and so they ended up in charge of vulnerable young trainees.

The RAF had their scandal in the Falklands where remote radar bases were also centres of constant sexual harrassment for female personnel. One wrote a stage show about it called Whisky Tango Foxtrot.

The worry today is the outsourced recruiting process has been such a disaster that the military are hanging onto bad apples because they don't have anyone else.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 07/04/2019 13:46

Mockers Thats terrible, and it seems like there hasn't been any real attempt to change the culture.

Its really worrying that the troops no one wants in their unit are left in charge of young trainees.

..what the actual fuck is wrong with men..

Fuck knows. I believe it's something to do with not evolving fully as a species.

One of them (or one of their handmaidens) will be along in a minute to tell us that NAMALT

To which I say BOMALT.

None of you can read. The alleged rape involving a soldier from Kendrew Barracks is a completely different incident to the alleged sexual assault involving the 17yo soldier. Apparently Kendrew Barracks is known as the "coke shame" Barracks, which is news to those of us who live in the local area, after a party involving a completely different regiment in January. The alleged rape wouldn't have happened on the Barracks because Lincolnshire Police don't cover this area. As yet no one has been charged with rape.

I truly hope that the women involved are getting the support they deserve.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 07/04/2019 14:21

Theres no need to be rude, several of us thought the way the article was written was misleading and said so.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 07/04/2019 14:31

The more I hear about this case, the worse it gets. Sad I really hope the young woman concerned is being properly supported. I also hope the men concerned face the full force of the law and the approbation of their peers. Bloody animals.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 07/04/2019 14:35

There was a report on the BBC but it seems to have been deleted, its also confusing about whether there has been one attack or two similar attacks (which might raise the question of pre-meditation.) Google isn't helping.

OP posts:
MockerstheFeManist · 07/04/2019 15:25

Deepcut was over twenty years ago and was a very dark episode in the history of the military that someone wanted covered up.

Those 'Suicides' convince nobody.

GerryblewuptheER · 07/04/2019 15:26

I can read fairy
The point i was trying to make was in.particularly aimed at the first article linked to and is representative of how many cases of abuse/rape/violence and even murder of females is spliced with enough "other stuff" that the main point is some how diluted or excuses almost being made. Like when they wax lyrical about what a good family man the person was or how they were all drunk or bring up the fact the wife had cheated as if that somehow justified what happened.

People dont always see time scales or venues when they have been deliberately given the impression of other things.

GerryblewuptheER · 07/04/2019 15:43

Yy pop I picked up on that bit too.

Gives again on one hand gives the impression that someone saw something.

But then comes out with " if true...."

Which is it.

And we all know that these things happen all the time and are massively under reported. So the comment about how no one has ever heard if anything so sickening happening smacks very highly of the whole " it never happens " thing.

MenuPlant · 07/04/2019 20:48

Institutional abuse of women and girls / prevalence in society / look at rotherham etc ?

Always kind of minimised.

Deepcut yes suicides who even believes that? And yet, can't be challenged.

I think this is being acted on as so extreme + for some reason woman is being listened to not told to stfu has she parents with clout or she is strong +tenacious to take establishment on. Which this is.

I imagine that women / esp young women in armed forces are at high risk of sexual abuse does anyone not think that?

I'm sure young men are raped too.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 07/04/2019 20:59

17 is a girl. Legally a child. Child is sexually assaulted by six men. Who filmed it.

MenuPlant · 07/04/2019 21:02

I thought that as well.

"Woman" felt like a stretch for a 17yo

Most countries and global rights institutions say 18 should be min sexual consent age

UK laws are actually out of step with global standards
Not that I necessarily want them changed

BUT 17yo sexually assaulted raped by 6 men

17 in this context she is a girl.
It's obscene

Nevertheless, I am sure this happens all the time but there are reasons that the services couldn't bury this.

MenuPlant · 07/04/2019 21:07

I mean obv rape and sexual consent are not same

reread that it came out wrong

most countries would see this as underage

uk does not

that colours things

it's not OK to rape anyone no matter how old they are

but most countries seem to understand rape as much worse when child / elderly than woman of child bearing years

which is awful but def the way it is

to describe her as a woman, ties into minimising the crime, in public perception

because raping women is less bad than children or elderly women or men or boys

sorry not very well written

ILoveMaxiBondi · 07/04/2019 21:14

Yes I understand what you’re saying menu that’s how I feel about it too.

Even if legally this isn’t “sexual assault of a minor/child” it’s most definitely sexual assault of a vulnerable person in the context of both her age and the fact she was a trainee in an institution where rank isn’t questioned.

UserMuser098 · 07/04/2019 21:32

There needs to be an enormous inquiry into sexual assault in the Army and a complete culture change. I've seen it start right from the recruitment office. Female soldiers IMO have never had a voice either, as complainants are basically laughed at or their careers have been threatened. It's as though in some regiments sexual assault is 'funny', and/or the male soldiers are entitled to do as they please.

It's worth mentioning I have met many fantastic male soldiers who would never ever do anything like this, however sexual assault is rife in the army - I hope this is looked into and finally the female soldiers who have been subjected to this treatment over the years are finally given a voice.
