As a maths naive I'm a) not sure how much more useful it is to have 31 trillion digits as opposed to 22 trillion digits but b) well impressed.

Brilliant!! I love reading about women doing amazing things, it gives me a happy little buzz Smile

Happy pi day! And I was wondering what to make for dinner.

Titsywoo · 14/03/2019 20:44

Ds came 2nd in a competition today for who could memorize and recite the most digits of pi. He managed 58 which is pretty amazing as his memory is horrendous normally (he's autistic).

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 10:39

It's either an unfortunate photo or the woman has an adam's apple in the pic which made me google and find that Pink news have got the story as "Queer woman".

None of it matters but if the person is trans it does show that diversity in hiring practices for tech jobs might not be as diverse as we think.

AornisHades · 15/03/2019 10:43

I thought the same Funk.
Man in IT transitions shocker.

Apparently they are a lesbian.

Its a bit mean to look at pictures and declare her a man. I don’t think you can tell either way so perhaps we shouldn’t speculate. I’ve seen it called wrong on this board a few times.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 15/03/2019 10:55

I'm clearly not very bright as I don't 'get it'.

It's the circumference of a circle divided by the diameter which, to date, goes on forever.

Has she done this sum herself and recorded all the numbers up to a point where she's exhausted or has a computer program done it and she wrote the program?

Absoltuely not trying to be an arsehole, maths was a struggle for me so I don't understand.

I nearly didn't and I really don't like it when people do, generally which is why I googled first. IME of Pink News they really only focus on the lesbians with penises though.

I don't get it either. On the whole I feel like we could probably be using the clever people better though! Grin

steppemum · 15/03/2019 10:59

I just needed to pop on here with a (slightly late) pi day comment

dd (aged 14) had a pi competition at school today - she did pi to 100 decimal places Shock and won!
She only knew it up to 66 on Monday, and has been spending every spare minute trying to get those magic last digits.

EcclesThePeacock · 15/03/2019 11:05

Video on this link ... I think some of your suspicions are unfounded.

www.bustle.com/p/31-trillion-digits-of-pi-were-calculated-by-emma-haruka-iwao-she-just-set-a-serious-world-record-16956031

The point about calculating pi to this many figures is precisely the computational challenge involved. In this case, it's at least in part a test of the robustness of cloud computing.

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 11:06

Steppemum Quite impressive, especially when you consider that most teenagers today probably don't even know their own phone numbers! They don't really need to memorise anything as everything is to hand.

I think I just always notice because I spent years and years as a young woman with people thinking I was a boy. It feeds into women being only able to look one way.

I absolutely would never have commented on her looks as I felt much the same. It was really that the photo appears to show an adam's apple. But as I said it may well be a shit photo. The problem is that the tech world has a high rate of transwomen (compared to the actual community) but a low rate of females which just means these stories can be used as diversity photo ops while not actually doing anything to help women.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 15/03/2019 11:24

eccles still none the wiser. Excuse my ignorance. So she programmed a computer to do the sum and instructed it to keep running? I'm sorry I still din't get it. Can someone please explain this to me as if I was an 8 year old please.

EcclesThePeacock · 15/03/2019 11:37

No, not really! I've spent over 30 years writing scientific software and I don't understand all the challenges involved in this sort of computation, other than its very difficult.

It does? I bet there's more women in tech than trans women.

EcclesThePeacock · 15/03/2019 11:46

Quite a few unflattering photos of Emma out there.
Confused and?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/03/2019 11:48

Of course there are - I suspect that the PP meant proportionally ie percentage of transpeople in IT is greater than percentage of transpeople in the population.

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 11:49

Yes, I'm sure there are.

picklemepopcorn · 15/03/2019 11:51

I would be very happy if the tech world celebrated diversity accurately. Emma identifies as queer. That's great.

I would prefer the media did not celebrate her as a woman in tech unless she is. There are a lot of photos which show her appearing to have a pronounced Adam's apple.

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 11:51

I actually did even say that in my post so I'm not really sure what deydododatdodontdeydo's point was.
